I believe Royal Stars prior to 99 had smaller carbs too. -
synthetic and worse whine!

From what I've read most Yamaha oil is made by Valvoline, and most Honda oil is made by Exxon,, I don't think either of them are near as good as Amsoil, Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec or Shell Rotella. Oh, and almost all semi-synthetic oils are only 10 to 15% synthetic. You would get the same protection and it would be cheaper just to use regular oil with half a quart of synthetic in each oil change. -
Too much whine:?
hig4s replied to GOINtoHELL's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Mine was about that loud, maybe louder, before I changed to Mobil 1 4T Racing 10w-40 synthetic and now it is much quieter. It starts to get a little louder about the time an oil change is due. But I have heard much worse.. And if you think the heat coming off the engine is bad on this bike, trying riding a Honda ST1300, a Yamaha FJ1300 or virtually any newer Harley. If you get the Yamaha lower vents you can direct cool air in toward you legs and you only really feel the heat when stopped. -
synthetic and worse whine!

The clutch went bad after 40k miles, on a bike with a know weak factory clutch and you think it was the synthetic oil? I've used synthetic on every bike I've had since the mid 80s. Including an 82 Yamaha 750 I use to drag race, an an 88 Kawasaki 750 Ninja, and five dirt bikes. One of them was a Husqvarna 125 MX bike that I use to have to slip the clutch unmercifully to have any acceleration coming out of the corners because the poor bike was hauling my 200+lb butt. The only clutch I have ever destroyed was on the 82 Yamaha 750 using Pennzoil auto motive oil, before I switched to synthetic. As far as the weight of the oil, I have heard a couple of people mention that heavier oils make the whine worse.. Never experienced it because I never used heavier oils. Mobil 1 20-50 is designed for air cooled twins, with sloppier engine tolerances than our bikes. I use the 4t racing same as Freebird. Basically the same oil I used most of the time in my Ninja and dirtbikes. -
I'm not sure how I got there, but I did Blood Mountain a few years ago, very nice, bought a souvenir T shirt from there, long sleeve, I was cold!!!

From what I've read the problem with oil leaks when changing to synthetics is not because it is synthetics.. While detergents are designed to clean the inside of the engine, they also have a tendency to stick to themselves. So any potential leaks in old gaskets can be masked when you have used the same type oil for a long time as there will be build up that will plug gaps. Most people use the same brand of oil all the time. When you switch oils, synthetic or not, you get a different mix of detergents. The new mix of detergents will often clean out the buildup from a different brand. If it was masking potential leaks, you now find them. I personally switch brands of oil for 0ne oil change occasionally, whether I'm using synthetic or not, to avoid build up.

I actually removed the intercom cord holder too, and rerouted it up on the handlebars just under the stereo controls.

Cornering a 2005 RSTD
hig4s replied to EFudd's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
How much air pressure do you have in your forks and shocks? Also if you are going to ride a shaft drive cruiser aggressively you should shift your weight to the inside of the corner by looking around the inside of the windshield, and slow before the corner so you can be slightly on the gas though the whole corner. Being on the gas, even a little, on a shaft drive bike raises the rear suspension some. -
Olive!!! it tastes better!!

Not sure about the fade, I took mine off my 07 right away and have just left it bare paint, like most bikes. I don't have a pic that shows it handy.

There are multiple qualities of both Lexan and acrylic.. Clearview uses IMA (Impact Modified Acrylic) which is the only acrylic that is DOT approved for windshields as it does not shatter like standard acrylic.

How many lights?
hig4s replied to Shipper's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I added LED front turn signals that are on bright all the time and go off to signal.. And I added passing lamps.. I noticed people give me more room now. Of course you still have to watch for the morons that wouldn't notice a Mack truck riding next to them. for the rear I added a full LED tail/brake light and a license frame with red LED brake/tail lights on the top and bottom, and amber LED signals on either side. Left my stock rear signals just that, stock. -
It is generally recommended that any tire over 6 years old by manufacture date be replaced, no matter how good it looks, and that is even on cars.

That is what I have, and I agree, but I have the blue/black to match my bike.. I also have the Tourmaster Venture mesh pants, I wear on long trips, they are the same with double liners.. they are not always the most convenient when doing day or short trips, so I also have pair of leather chaps for over my jeans, and normal rain pants. Depends on how far the ride and what I plan to do when I get there as to what I carry.

If you really want a Wing, Southern Honda (two stores, Chattanooga TN and Orlando FL) has left over 08 Wings starting at $18.5K http://www.southernhonda.com/pages/newvehicles/viewcategories/25/37/2008/honda-motorcycles.aspx But in my opinion a Wing is not an upgrade, at best a lateral move. Same with the BMW LT or the HD dresser.

A fiberglass helmet can have structural damage that cannot be seen after a drop, so it might warrant replacement even if the shell does not appear to be damaged. Polycarbonate and Carbon fiber shells are generally fine as long as they look fine.

I spent two years researching and test riding touring bikes, bikes that could be converted to touring and sport-touring bikes before I bought the RSV.. I almost bought the BMW-LT so it was not about money. For me it was about comfort and value. I checked out HDs, the V-Rod and the Ultra Classic,, loved the engine on the V-Rod but not much else, didn't like the engine on the UC, and it was not as comfortable for me, and way less comfortable for my wife than the RSV, BMW or the Wing. I have thought of buying a second bike for solo riding, and again looked at HDs,, I like the Street Bob, but just can't see spending another $16K for a second bike that I probably would not ride as much as my RSV.

I test rode one, the most uncomfortable bike I've ever been on, including my old 250 motocross racing bike. I really wanted to like it, and I actually love the engine.

1970 Yamaha mini enduro 60cc first bike, learned to ride, lived in the UP of Michigan and wandered the logging trails, my first freedom. 1972 Yamaha AT125 enduro first street legal bike, got my MC license the same day I got my car license and drove this to high school when weather permitted. 1975 Honda MT250 Elsinore Honda's first street legal 2-stroke, first bike I paid for 100% myself, drove it weekends from Great Lakes Naval station to Grand Rapids MI where my mom had moved to. Took it with me in the trunk of my car when I was stationed in Long Beach CA,, My first trip to Disneyland I was just cruising around on it and there was Disney, I pulled in, they had free motorcycle parking so I stopped. 1978 Yamaha XS650 first full street bike, explored all over Southern Calif. 1970 Kawasaki Mach III 500 My first basket case, bought it just after I was transferred to Pearl Harbor. Fixed it up, road it for about a year until it blew up. 1976 XT500 second basketcase, got it in a box for $50.. road it for a year off road only. 1982 Yamaha Seca 750 Started amateur drag racing with this bike. Didn't do too bad. 1983 Suzuki 230 quadsport Got it just after I got out of the Navy and moved back to Michigan. Did one year amateur hare scrambles quad racing, did quite well. 1985 Honda XR200 missed dirtbikes, bought this but keep the quad, would have friends out with me and let them ride the quad. 1987 KTM EXC250 the best all around off road bike I ever had. 1988 Kawasaki Ninja 750 Just cool, made me feel like Top Gun!!! actually toured with it some. 1999 Husqvarna CR125 Bought this when my son turned 12 and I got him an XR100. 2003 kawasaki ZR-7S 750 Added Givi bags and trunk and got serious about touring. 2003 KTM MX250 Decide to up the ante when my son moved up to a YZ125. This bike scared me. 2007 Yamaha RSV My wife said if I got something comfortable for a passenger she would tour with me. They were all special to me.

HDs do have sweet paint, and no fake plastic chrome,, I like that, but the Venture has a relatively modern liquid cooled engine, with decent power and a longer wheelbase with more comfort (for my wife and I) than any HD,, I like that. It also was cheaper, but then resale value is not as good. One of the guys at work has an 09 Road King he got just over a year ago when the 09s first came out. Very nice bike but it has been in the shop 6 times in the last year.. My 07 Venture has been in the shop 0 times since I bought in the begining of 08. But his problems have been with the new throttle by wire and the computer and if he resets the computer it will work again until he shuts the bike off, so it is not like he hasn't been able to ride it. He has put 23k miles on it already. Bottom line, if you like it and can afford it, there is nothing wrong with buying an HD,,

I had the XT version of that with the aluminum tank.. (XTs were street legal, TTs were not) basically just a headlight, tail light, and turn signals were added on the XTs. I got it for $50 (engine in pieces in a box) back in 81 or 82 from someone that tore it apart to fix a bent shift fork and couldn't figure out how to put it back together.
