  1. I removed the nut that holds the upper handlebar in place and machined a nifty little stub fom a piece of 303 stainless to go back in its place. 10x1mm are the threads on that nut and curiously enough that is not a common metric fastener but I did have a tap. After screwing it on in place of the nut I wished I had made it longer but I can always make another to go on the other side.
  2. I'm looking for a metric speedo for my '86 VR..........the odometer on the last one I bought does not work. If anyone has one let me know price and shipping to Australia please. Thanks Jim O'D.........

  4. On my way to work tonight I noticed a grinding noise coming from the rear brake. I thought it odd as 2 days ago I put on new rear tire, brakes pads did the lube of the splines..etc...... When I tried to stop tonight the rear brake pedal was soft, managed to get her stopped and on the side of the road. Looking at the rear brakes, I find that either I forgot to install or tighten the two bolts that hold the rear caliper in place, (they were gone). The caliper was rubbing against the rim and was making the grinding noise. I was able to limp the bike to my work but now need to get things fixed up. Anyone know what size and thread pitch the bolts are for the caliper. If it wasn't metric I could make a good guess, my metric skills are lacking. Everything looks to be in good shape, and should just be able to be bolted back in place. I will prob run a tap in the caliper to chase the threads. And should I use locktite or something similar when I bolt it back in place.
  5. I'm trying to find out the socket size needed for the rear wheel axle nut on a 2nd gen. In the tech library I read a thread on removing the rear wheel that stated the size was 1 1/6 inch. Is this correct? With the front axle socket being a metric size (22mm) it seems the rear would be metric too. Just wanted to confirm before I go out and purchase the socket.
  6. here is a great on line parts supplier for the gold wing, www.directlineparts.com/ they have great service and prices. i bought most all my wing stuff from them. they also cover other metric bikes.
  7. Well last friday I hauled my friends road king over to an independant dealer for him to trade his bike in on a springer. He had some shoulder problems and the king was to heavy of a bike so he traded. While he was doing the deal I looked over the used inventory and I hate to admit it but harley does make a nice bike. Just looked at the paint, chrome, and the bikes overall, and I must say alot better quality vs. the metric bikes. This morning I was cleaning up the venture for a possible ride today once the temps. got a little warmer and I was somewhat disappointed at the venture. Don't get me wrong, I like the venture, for power, reliabilty, and looks, still don't like the top heavy feeling when turning when riding two up. I can tell you if the economy was better and I had the coins, I would consider moving the venture, but I'm afraid my wife would have some issues with that to say the least, as she claims that's her bike. When we got home and unloaded the his bike I was offered a ride on the Harley, and I did like the sound and it handled nice and was manageable. Granted it was a springer, but I have ridden and ultra about two years ago and got the same positive experience, but with the price difference between the venture and a Harley that was the deciding factor. I can see why harley has a cult like following where as the metric rider's don't seem to have this. I mean on Sunday's around here the HD's dealers are open and appear to do a fair amount of buisiness, where as the metric dealer's are closed, so this metric guy ends up riding with the harley guys and eventualy end up at the HD dealers looking at all that eye candy, works on me at times. Sometimes I feel like Rodney Dangerfield, I get no respect! because I don't ride a HD, anyone else get the sme feeling at times?
  8. I've spent a fair amount of time putting Christmas presents on the bike and I spend more than half my time looking for metric tools. It seems, everything I have now is American Standard. I am looking for an affordable ($100 or less) metric tool set that I can use and keep in the motorcycle. Has anyone found a good deal on one or reccommend something that fits the use of the RSV? Ben
  9. pounds to kilograms x.4536 kilograms to pounds x2.2046 u.s. tons to metric tonnes x.9071 metric tonnes to u.s. tons x1.1023 gallons to litres x4.5461 litres to gallons x.22 miles to kilometres x1.6093 kilometres to miles x.6214 fahrenheit to celcius > to convert a fahrenheit temp to celsius, first subtract 32 from the fahrenheit temperature, then multiply the number by five-ninths x.555 to get celsius. celcius to fahrenheit > to convert celsius temp in fahrenheit, first multiply the celsius temperature reading by nine-fiths x1.8 then add 32 to get fahrenheit. hope this helps. was not sure where to post it. if its in the wrong place please move to the right spot!
