  1. I have just recieved the Dyna 3000 ign mod, kit # D3K7-3 from ATV Galaxy. My question is, has anyone else installed this module and if so are there any particular settings for the 8 pins on the back. I see the ones for the rev limiter ( it recomends 5000rpm) but do I need to touch the advance and retard pins. Any instruction/advice would be appreciated. Thanks Ian
  2. I just bought a 1983 xvz12 and it is not running very well. When you rev it up the front carb on the left side...the "piston looking thing" on the top (when air cleaner is removed) is not moving and the back carb is back firing when you rev it up. The right side seems okay. I was told it has been sitting since 89 but the last year he was driving to and from his MC club. and help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. I have a 2005 RSTD with Khromewerks exhaust, K&M air filters, and no other modifications. Over the past week or so I have had the following problem: When the bike sits overnight or cools down for several hours it starts but only runs on 3 cylinders until I rev the engine a few times then I can actually hear a change in the pitch of the exhaust and the other cylinder fires up. I have installed new plugs (rear only) yesterday and it still have the problem. I'm pretty sure it's getting gas because if I let it idle I can smell gas. I know its only running on 3 cylinders because I do the "touch test" on the headers. The cylinder affected is (as your sitting on the bike) the back right cylinder. After I rev the motor a few times the header gets hot like the others. It runs normally the rest of the time, it's only when it cools off that I have the issue. Using the choke doesn't really make a difference.
  4. Hello All. Thanks for taking a look. Little history first, 83 VR. Less thank 6k miles. New to me. Has spent the better part of its life sitting in a yard. So far, I have: Pressure washed Full carb overhaul Bleed the clutch Re soldered the CLASS thingy Changed spark plugs Checked gas tank for rust Some other odds and ends not related After getting my carbs finally done. Put em back on and it ran. Much improved than before. I have not synced yet. The tach is non responsive. I rev it up. It goes down. Let off it goes back up. Thought it was strange. Bike will not rev up past *k RPM. I do know that #1 is getting a spark when I push the starter button. Then as soon as it starts, the spark goes away. Of coarse I am letting off the button when it does start. However, if I tap the button while it is running I can see it get a spark. I know I should not do that. But it was a thought. If I hit the kill switch, I can see a weak spark. If I turn the IGN. switch off, I swear I see a weak spark again. I have checked the plug cap. It was clean. The place it mates with the wire was slightly corroded and loose. I have since cut off till I got good wire and reinstalled with no effect. As I type this its 26*. Its a bit cold to go dealing with it much. I have not checked out anything else. I plan to take the right hand controls apart and clean it. I also plan to check out the fuse holder on the bat. What else should I look at? And how should I do it? I was under the impression that coils either work, or dont. Is it safe to assume that? If she needs a new TCI, I will have to move on. I do not want to give up that easy, but buying a used on on eBay looks out of the picture. Michael
  5. Lots of pros and cons to be read on this site about using 15W50 synth oil in the RSV, but it's hard to turn down a 5 quart container of Mobile 1 for $23 at Wal-Mart. Been using M1 20W50 for about 2 years now, and the 15W50 does seem to be quite a bit thicker, but for older engines with higher mileage and higher rev limits, it makes sense to give it a try, especially at that price. Only concern may be clutch slippage, but we'll see how it performs.
  6. Hello I am new here and do not currently own a RSV....but am looking to buy one. Do the 1999-2010 RSV have a rev limiter? I thought that you could only get a rev limiter on a fuel injected bike. I guess if the limiter is hooked to the ignition then it is possible. Please let me know about this.....It would save me alot of money not having to buy a 250.00 tach set-up. Thank you....Bret Holland
  7. Before installing the needle shim mod my mileage was somewhere right around 32 mpg. That mileage was determined by filling my tank nearly to the brim, riding at 70 - 75 mph and until my fuel warning light came on; filled up to the brim again, and did it all again; four times. So, I've had these shaved down vinyl shims, purchased here on this site, for some time and decided just tonight to install them. It's done! Heck I am not even sure how much difference there is between the new shims and the stock one. I know stock is .112 in. At idle, of course there would be no difference. Initially it does not seem to rev as quickly as it did before the mod; seems to be too lean now, stutters and bawgs some. Inserting three fingers in the air intate improves its ability to rev. Anyway, I will take it out on the road and run a few tanks through it and report back how this mod affects its mileage and performance. Hope this was worth the time involved working in a garage at 105 degrees. Oh, all the evaluating will be minus the plastic just in case I have to go back to stock.
  8. I installed a new tach to the bike today and it works. Simple and easy installation. VERY simple.. Bike idles at 1,000 rpm and it's fun to watch it wind up into the 6,000 range when dropping the hammer.. I couldn't see where the rev limiter was kicking in as I was too busy watching the road BTW, where DOES the rev limiter kick in and what's red line on this engine? Being old air force, I'd be putting VnE and VnR markers on the gauge hehe.. All I need now is to make a bracket that brings it up and twists forward to align it properly, or I might just leave it as is since I would be using it for reference only anyway..
  9. I have 08 RSTD attempting to sync the carbs useing carbtune #1&2 (left side) the vacume on both are bouncing up and down like crazy and when I rev they peg to top? 3&4 (right side are steady? Am I missing something??
  10. Took my rsv to a bike nite tonight and had it put on a dyno to see what it would do. Its all stock but h-d mufflers. I was the only non harley in the group. It peaked at 76hp and 75 ft pd of trrque at 6000 rpms. Found out the rev limiter is set at 6000 rpms so it would go no farther. I was pleased with was they said. Its amazing how maney people don't know what a Venture is.
  11. While talking with my Son-in-law yesterday, the subject came up about when he had his 'CrotchRocket'. He mentioned a couple of times about the Rev Limiter. I know that my Venture has one also. Back in my younger days, around 1980, I used to go over Red-Line MANY times on my old 2-Stroke Kaw H1 500. I eventually exploded a piston doing this. But, I did go beyond Red-Line MANY times before that. It always felt like walking a tightrope, knowing that I could blow the engine sometime. Plus, the little extra power it gave got the adrenaline up. Of course I would NEVER do that on THIS bike, but I still don't like someone else keeping me from being stupid. To me, it's kind of like the Helmet Law, if I want to be stupid and ride without one, it should be my right to. craigr
  12. OK folks...a new bike and a new set of problems. I have 2005 RSV and when I turn on 'Cruise' control switch all lights go on at first, then 'set' and 'rev' go out like it is supposed to. When I try to set the speed then both the 'set' and 'rev' come on and blink 5 times together. About 30 sec later, they repeat and this will continue all day. Pushing 'set' or 'rev' or 'cancel' does nothing. I have checked main fuses under left cover below seat, clutch switch, and both brake switches. I have taken apart the handle bar cruise switches and sprayed with contact cleaner, as well as WD-40 so that switch rocks correctly. Any ideas before I start to tear this thing apart? PO says it worked fine last time used. I intend to take outer fairing off, as well as both lowers, and check/clean all connections and use dielectric grease, and check vacuumn lines, and also more fuses under right lower cowling (is this correct?) Any and all ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Text realigned for easier reading Some Line types changed for easier reading. Gary I have completed the 1st Generation schematics. My goal in doing this is to make them easier to read and reduce the number of pages needed to display the information. I have used color and line types to make the wiring easier to follow. In some cases I could not use the exact color that is being represented due to visibility and printing issues. For example yellow is hard to see on the screen and does not print well. The previous posting for the 1983-1985 models have been replaced by what is included with this post. The 1983 differs significantly from the 1984-1985 models in the areas of Flasher, Hazard, Starting Circuit Cut-Out Relays, the Hazard Switch, Canceling Unit & Diode Pack. The files for the 86-89 models that were previously posted have been revised slightly and are now at Revision B. Major corrections done included coils were numbered incorrectly in Simplified Circuit & the Flasher Relay Assembly has been updated to include flasher information. The 1990 major changes from the 1986-1989 models were the TCI, coil pick-up & fuel pump control. This post supersedes all previous posts I have done in regards to the 1st gen wiring diagrams. All 1st gen's are included in this post. The files will look best when plotted at 11" x 17" size or larger. Office Max and Staples as well as others can do this for you for a minimal charge if you want a printout. I paid $1.00 for an 11" x 17" color print at Staples. 83 Yamaha Venture TK Wiring Diagram Rev C.pdf 1983 Venture XVZ12TK From 1983 Yamaha Venture Owners Manual. 83 Yamaha Venture Royale TDK Wiring Diagram Rev C.pdf 1983 Venture RoyaleXVZ12TDK From 1983-1985 Yamaha Venture Service Manual 83 Yamaha Venture TK Simplified Circuit Diagram Rev C.pdf 1983 Venture XVZ12TK From 1983-1985 Yamaha Venture Service Manual, page 7-1 83 Yamaha Venture Royale TDK Simplified Circuit Diagram Rev C.pdf 1983 Venture Royale XVZ12TDK From 1983-1985 Yamaha Venture Service Manual, page 7-1 83 Yamaha Venture electrical info.pdf This file is a compilation of various sheets from the 1983 Yamaha Venture Service Manual that would be helpful when working with electrical system. 15. anyone know the exact rpm at redline and exact rpm for the rev limiter?? been getting a little hotroddy lately and just don't want to over doi it.. havent hit the rev limiter yet but need to know what its set at. thanx
  16. Hey guys, on my 06 Midnight, I did a bunch of maintenance on it this week that the ol' girl is a teenager again.. full of spirit and light on her feet.. The ONE thing I could never do with this bike is reach the rev limiter when accelerating onto the highway as the engine sounds like it might truly kill itself.. no joke.. I'm almost wondering if the previous owner disabled it somehow.. Yesterday was a a fun day after installing leveling links, flushing hydraulic clutch fluids, tightening the steering head, etc etc.. that I pushed the bike super hard to get a feel of the bike anew again.. no kidding it's like having a new bike.. wow. When accelerating hard and fast yesterday, I tried to reach the rev limiter to see and feel where it was, I was bound and determined to feel the 'tripping of the engine' that indicates the rev limiter kicking in.. but a quick glance to the speedo I spotting the engine oil light coming on and go off as I shifter, though never having reached the rev limiter.. Having just done an oil change, I wondered if I was low, but the fluid level in the sight glass shows half up the glass.. Is the sensation of the rev limiter kicking in on the Venture as noticeable as on the VStar for example? Does your oil light come on when YOU hit the rev limiter.. Is there something else I should be checking as well ? What speeds does your rev limiter kick in when in first gear? My biggest fear is blowing the engine because the previous owner had disengaged the rev limiter and forgot to tell me.. ya know? Wind speed and BUGS.. wooo hoooo
  17. Ok, I have completely gone through the carbs, everything is clean and unobstructed. Even installed new diaphragms. Sync is about as close as I can get it using a carbtune. New plugs even. Yet at idle I am still getting an occassional popping or chuffing (whatever) and if hit hard from idle, it doesn't rev immediately; sort of wants to stammer then rev. What am I missing here? Any advise would be most helpful.
  18. In another thread, I had asked if the 1st gens had a rev limiter, but didn't get a responseyet. Since I am hearing how fast they must be (never ridden one myself...yet), I was wondering if any of them through the model years had rev limiters. Just wondering if you folks that have them are able to "spin 'em up" a bit more than our 2nd gens, which do have limiters. Thanks.
  19. Ok, here's the deal. I was very glad when I found there was a site for Yamaha Ventures Today I purchased an 88 Venture Royale. It is in what appears to be very good shape, however I noticed that it would not rev up. It will go well out of the hole but will not let the rpm's get very high. You need to shift sooner than usual or it will bog down. Max speed as it is right now is about 45 mph. At a standstill if you give it throttle it will only rev up a little and then it stutters. I pulled the parts off to look down the throat of the carbs and as I give it throttle all 4 sleeves appear to shutter after moving only a little. Since the rest of the bike was excellent, the transmission felt good and the engine appears to run well I thought I would take a chance on it being something relatively simple. Any ideas? or do I have a real nice coat rack in may garage? Thanks for any help you can give me BnkrBill
  20. This is my first tech post. Maybe someone can help me. I bought a 1989 Venture Royale in July. The seller said the carbs were synched and the bike tuned. It ran great until two weeks ago. My wife and I started out on a trip, and after about 40 miles the charging system went down. I took the headlight fuse out and we barely made it back home. On the way home I noticed smoke from underneath the breather box. I found that it was the crankcase vent hoses that were disconnected. Today I removed the air box and reattached the hose.I put the box back on and when I started the bike up it wouldn't rev at all. It was like it was starving for gas. I couldn't get any rpm's without putting the choke on almost all the way. I took the box back off and removed the hoses and it still wouldn't rev. I cannot see anything that got disconnected or unplugged during the removal of the air box. I have always worked on my own bikes and can usually troubleshoot pretty well. But this has me stumped. I have already changed my exhaust collector and learned to troubleshoot my charging system thanks to the forums on this site. The shop manual with this bike gets to be very confusing. Any help would be appreciated.
  21. I'm down here in Kissimmee visiting my Bro Hulk who's in Oceola Medical Center recovering from a Triple Valve job on his heart... He's a former Member here who's not real PC or WWW savy and seldom posted... I've been riding his 2000 RSV around which has been siting since Bike Week and had old gas in it... I've run a couple of cans of Sea Foam through it and now have new gas in it and it is running better but... I have to drag the clutch a little and over rev it a little to get it to take off from a stop without knocking/pinging... Could this be a syncing problem... It sometimes pings when reving in neutral.. He has never had the carbs synced and I'd like to fix it for him so it'll be ready to roll when he recovers... I'm down here until Wed. unless the hurricane changes our flight plans. Anybody got any ideas??
  22. '87 I know it all depends on riding habits but I have 58K miles on the bike with original clutch. Do you all have more miles with original clutch, I'm very easy on it. to give you an idea, I have two cars with 300K miles on their original clutches. I was bogging a bit in 5th gear and accelerated and I thought I heard the engine rev a bit. I didn't reinact it to see what would happen so I'm not sure if I sensed something that wasn't there.
  23. I just ordered one and would like to know what a relatively safe rev limit would be to set it at. Ron:scubadive:
  24. Ok, Here we are again, had the carbs off and cleaned them up good, but did notice the diaphagms are pretty much shot, so I am looking around the net and come up with a price of $57.00 each, does this sound right?? Holy **** that is about $240.00 plus shipping. Guess I know where my Christmas money is going So this is what is going on, the bike starts right up, idles fine, but when you go to rev it up, it falls flat on its face and sputtures, does this sound about right for a diaghagms issue Ok, guys let me have it, I need all the help I can get....... Thanks in advance
  25. Just curious, I was in a dealership today and I saw a couple of Vmax on the floor and noticed the redline on the tach was around 9500 or 10000 rpm. I thought I had heard that the engines were very similar internally. What's inside a Vmax that enables it to rev 3000 more rpm? Or, is Yamaha just being real conservative with the 5 yr warranty? DT
