This may be old news to some, but I just got a copy from the chief Yamaha instructor at MMI in Orlando, thought it could be of use to someone besides me. I mentioned to him thay my CD portion of the audio system was working intermitently, so he sent me the bulletin. 59085.pdf

The RX indictes that the CB is receiving a signal, you must have the CB on with the volume down to a level where you cannot hear it. Check section 4 of the owners manual if you have one.

Venture "Stalled" today...WTH??
M61A1MECH replied to stvmaier's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Did you notice any "whoshing" type noise when you first opened the gas cap? That is a sign that you may a clogged or pinched vent hose on the fuel tank. If the vent hose gets clogged or pinched as the gas is removed from the tank it will create a partial vacuum in the tank and and cause the fuel to stop flowing out of the tank. Could a pinched hose or maybe some critter crawled up the vent tube, there have been cases of mud daubbers plugging up vent hoses in the past. -
Yes, as odd as it sounds 0 psi is what the factory recommends for both the rear shock and the front forks. I run about 30 psi in the rear and 7 psi in the front forks.

I put them on my 07 Venture shortly after getting it, my hands were going to sleep and tingling after just a short time, since installing the GRIP PUPPIES no problems. They last a couple of years and then you need to put new ones on, but they inexpensive and I uaslly keep at least one spare in the gargae all the time. I get mine here http://www.casporttouring.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=GPSMALL&Category_Code=grips

Oil Drain Plug Washer Size
M61A1MECH replied to AD5ME's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The folks at Magnetic Drain plug call it a 14 mm or SW02, see link below to their web site. I got a bag of them when I bought my drain plug from them work fine. http://www.magneticdrainplug.com/ The actual part measures 7/8" OD x 9/16" ID (approx) x .08 thick. -
A dealer can do that thru their Yamaha service records system, but I am not sure that it can be done by just anybody on line. All the dealer needs is the VIN and they should be able to pull all records of work performed at Yamaha dealers on that VIN.

The thread talking about the upgrade to 1400cc FJR started over on one of the FJR forums back in 2008, probaby just like the thread about ugrading the Venture to 1800cc with the new V-max mill.

2002 RSV cruise erroring out
M61A1MECH replied to revinger's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Page 3-6 of the 2007 manual reads: "WARNING: If the cruise control system is defective, the "SET and "RES" indicator lights will flash simultaneously. If this occurs, turn the cruise control system off and have a Yamaha dealer check it." First time I have heard of this happening. Some folks have had issues if the brake lever or pedal are set to tight on the micro switch such that they trip the switch on hard bumps of if they have leather fringe on the levers. -

During one of the service talks given by the Yamaha factory reps at Bikeweek a few years ago, they said one of the main causes of fouled ingition switch key slots was the clear plastic covering the factory puts on the bezel around the ignition switch. They put it on to protect it during during assembly and predelivery. The dealer is supposed to remove it when the bike is prepped for delivery to a customer, but most do not. That plastic covering will sometimes work lose or small bits will come off and get jammed in the key slot, you can imagine what happens after that. So maybe that is something else to check also.

See this write up in the gen two tech section, I think this is what you are describing. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=501

Right turn signal acting up
M61A1MECH replied to Moakster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You should have two contacts in the socket where the bulb plugs in. Check that the one that is for the turn indicator, smaller filament, is getting full voltage when you have the right turn signal on, should see the meter pulse. If it is make sure the contact is not dirty, corroded or damaged. -
No grease fittings on the swing arm. When I had my 98 Royal Star and it came time to repack the swing arm bearings I asked the dealer. They said they rarely do it, as the bearings do not move much and they never had any go bad. I rode that bike for 96,000 miles and never did have the bearings checked. Maybe not the best advice, but I am not overly concerned about thoe bearings going bad. I would like to hear from folks that have done the inspection / repack to know what they found when as to the condition of the bearings.

The tires may br treated with some that protects them in storage, but the thing that makes them the most slippery is the mold release that is sprayed onto the inside surface of the mold used to form the outer surface of the tire. It stays with the ubber when the tire is de-molded. These are often a silicone or PTFE (Teflon) based material that are hard to remove by simply washing, it needs to be abraded off, thus the need for scufing the tires. Do becareful with new tires for first few hundred miles.

Never had the issue of getting fumes while puling my Bushtec, but when I had my 98 TC with Bubs I did notice the sound bouncing off the trailer and being louder than I wanted on a long trip. On the Venture I have turn-out tips on the Kromewerks, so there is no additional noise due to the echo of the pipes off the front of the trailer.

AT 80 to 100 kph (48 to 60 Mph) if you crack the throttle it is going to lug the engine down, these V-4s like to have the RPMs up, at those speeds the RPMS are to low to do any serious acceleration. I normally stay out of 4th below 60 MPH (100 kph)try not to hit 5th until somewhere around 70 MPH (117 kph). This bike will do 90 MPH (150 kph) in third gear brfore you get into the rev limiter. Keep the RPMs up and will not have any issues. Do not misunderstand me, you can motor down the road in 4th or 5th at those speeds, but you cannot accelerate quickly from those speeds in those gears. Tyr keeping the RPMs up, you like it a lot.

Yes that is the one I was talking about, dry just means the oil is not collecting into that area for some reason. When you have the dealer fix it, make sure they flush the cooling system to get the residual oil out of the system.
-
I know the water pump seals were the culprit on my 98 TC, a couple of folks over on the Delphi forums had similar issues and found it to be the water pump shaft.
-
Walt, Most likely cuprit are the seals on the water pump shaft, the water pump is on a driven gear in the crank case, there are seals to keep the oil in the crank case and coolant in the cooling system, sometimes when the seals go bad you will get oil in the coolant. There is a small chamber between the seals where any leaks should go first, check under the bike for a small rubber vent hose inline and behind the water pump housing, see if it is wet with oil or coolant, that should confirm if the seals are leeking. Had the same thing happen on my 98 Royal Star Tour Classic, but not till way after the warrenty was up. Check that you do not have coolant in your oil also. A compression test and compression leak down test at the deal should tell them if you have a blown head gasket. Good luck
