If you know where the previous owner lives, go and flick your headlight from low to high beam. If his garage door opens you will know that it is what it is. Where was the liitle black box located when you found it?

2007 cyl head or other late model issues?
M61A1MECH replied to Grisolm1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The issue on the 2007s was that some of the heads were not torqued properly, nothing wrong with the castings, just not assembled correctly. Easy to have the dealer check, all they need is the VIN and they can look it up to see if it is on the list. If it is the dealer will fix it. I am not aware of any other issues with the later model GEN 2s. -
Here are a couple of not so good PDF s that show all of the models available for the cruiser line in 1998, this should help ypu identify your bike, if it is all still stock.

DUG050 That is not a 98 Royal Star Tour Deluxe, the 98 TD was a 2 piper not a 4 piper, the bags were hard ABS bags like the current Venture except that they were not hinged on the side they lifted off, many were lost while riding because they were not latched properly.

Here are some pics I just took of the right hand side. Looks to me like the larger diameter goes on the inside. Merry Christmas, please go for ride now.

M61A1MECH replied to Mike G in SC's topic in Watering Hole
Mike I was in Panama City about a month ago and stayed at the Holiday Inn Sunspree, http://hipcbeach.com/, pretty nice place right on the beach. -
It was good, had about 13 or 14 folks show up, good food, good conversation and good ice cream. Hope you can make the next one when ever it is.

This link will take you Yamaha's listing of the 10 dealers closest to Orlando, sort of depends on what part of town you are in. Personally I like Seminole Power Sports or Orlando Yamaha. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/dealers/locator_results.aspx?&LOC=28.5377529561747%3a-81.3773531302006&CT=28.5377529561747%3a-81.3773531302006%3a24.9376971817917%3a18.7032728863438&DSN=MapPoint.NA&GAD2=&GAD3=Orlando%2c+Florida%2c+United+States&IC=28.5377529561747%3a-81.3773531302006%3a32%3aOrlando%2c+Florida%2c+United+States&FC=Motorcycles&ls=star

Could be the carbs out of sink, but do not forget that Yamaha was going after the Harley crowd when they introduced the original Royal Stars and so they did not put any type of counter balancer in those models. They wanted them to vibrate and to feel like a V-twin, that could be what your are feeling. It wasn't until they introduced the Royal Star Venture that a counter balancer was used, but it was still only for the Venture models and later the 2005 and up Tour Deluxes.

Chrome Breather Covers
M61A1MECH replied to Hotrod's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
No these go just under the tank between the cylinder headss, the one on the left has a cut out to go around the choke knob. The ones you are thinking about are the chrome air box covers. -
Considering a 2008 Venture
M61A1MECH replied to Joe West's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The original Royals and the Venture are geared very much the same. I owned a 98 Tour Classic for 9 years, put 96,000 miles on it, ran it up to 90 in third gear with no problems. This engine likes to rev high, that is where it builds it best power. Most folks that ride Ventres and Royal Stars in general do not even think about 5th until they are north of 65 MPH. If you really want a treat, find a nice section of deserted highway or interstate, shift into 3rd and open up the throttle, best to hang on just a bit, if you have not done this it will likely amaze you what the bike will do. Or try installing a DYNA 3K ignition module, that will let you bump the rev-limiter up and change the ignition curve also to increase the performance of the bike. -

Here are the Delphi Forums and also another that is sometime helpful. http://forums.delphiforums.com/royalstar http://forums.delphiforums.com/vrider http://www.yamahamotorcycleforum.com Dal, Yes, gear whine is pretty routine on all Royal Star models, changing the clutch basket should help, just changing your speed in a given gear will normally make it go away also. Mine screams at 55 MPH in 4th gear, but not at 60. Yes the warrenty will transfer, if you are not buying from a Yamaha dealer, go to one close by and have the service deptartment do it, they may want to look the bike over for obvious damage. If you ar ebuying from a Yamaha dealer make sure they transfer the warrenty before you leave with the bike. -
Considering a 2008 Venture

The "S" model took the place of the Midnight (black) a few years back. The "S" and the Midnights had extra chrome, mostly on the front end, fork tubes and maybe clutch / brake levers. They were always more expensive than the standards. If you decide to get it, just keep your eyes open on this forum and the Delphi forums, someone will be selling tank badges in short order. One post requesting to buy tank badges will most likely result in several offers to send you some for shipping costs. I would not worry about the rear brake pedal, I am sure you will adapt to it and never give it another thought, funny how that sort of thing works it self out. -
Considering a 2008 Venture

Here is a little data to chew on for what it is worth. Currently on CycleTrader.com there are 12 2008 Ventures for sale. The average price is $12014.00 The high is $13,999.00 The low is $9995.00 Kelly Blue book lists the avreage retail for a 2008 Standard as $11,150.00 and the "S"model; as $11,845.00. There are 9 1996 Royals on Cycletrader.com. The average price is $5492.00 The high is $8000.00 The low is $2950.00 You will almost always get a beter price selling your bike to a private party rather than using it for a trade, but you have to be prepared to wait until someone wants to buy your 96. I opted to keep my 98 when when I bought my 07 Venture and try to sell it , it took me 5 months to sell it, I did get about $2000.00 more than what the trade in offer was, but it took a while. It looks to me like you have a fair deal, not great but at least fair. Good luck. -
My 07 Venture did just about the same thing when I opened up the air boxes. After I reshimmed the diaphram needles by one washer, it was back to normal no more hesitation.

Is it time for Seafoam?
M61A1MECH replied to M61A1MECH's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I am not sure what it was all about, I put it back together tonight , idled it till it quit for lack of fuel, put about 1/3 of a can of Seafoam in the tank, turned the petcock on let it run at idle, no pops no leaks. Ran about 10 miles, about half way through shut the petcock off again and let it run till it started to sputter, back on with the gas, no problems. Got back to house no leaks, dry as a bone. I will take it out tommorrow for a good long run and see what happens. If it breaks, I have roadside assistance. -

Hey Goose thanks for the info, yeah some of my nomeclature is not the same as yours, but you IDed the parts I was talking about, the backfire was not thru the carb, I guess the correct term is after fire, because it was a popping from the left exhaust. Like I said once I got it apart to where I could see what may have been leaking there was nothing obvious. I am going to put it all back together , less the chrome carb covers so I can see a bit better and run the carbs dry and see what happens. if there is anything meaningful to photograph I take some some pics. -
Is it time for Seafoam?
M61A1MECH replied to M61A1MECH's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I pulled the tank, the left carb cover and the left top air box, nothing obvious. It was definatly raw fuel on the outside of the lower carb boot, wiped it with my finger and did the sniff test, plus there was a very stong odor of fuel in the garage for a long time after. The vent line for the overflow is tee'd into both carbs just about middle of the black covers on the carbs, it possible that the float stuck and one of those joints on the tee leaked causing the fuel to flow onto the black cover, which was also damp with fuel. The bike has set for a few weeks, I ran it to work yesterday and today , about 50 miles round trip, it did not happen until I was low on fuel, so I may have picked up a bit of trash, but with the screen on the feed tube in the tank, the filter and the screens in the carbs it does not sound very likely, probably varnish that broke loose. Bike runs fine under throttle, so I am thinking it is sticking float needle valve. I was thinking about running carbs dry to try and flush them, I will probably run some Seafoam through it and see if that helps. The bike is still under warrenty, but am sure this will be judged normal wear and tear issue not covered by the warrenty. It may end up back at the dealer, I do most of my own maitenance, but I learned a long time ago that carburetors don't like it when I work on them. Thanks for the help, I will update when I know something. -
I stopped for gas today after a short fast run down the interstate, when I was idling waiting for a pump the left pipe starts backfiring. When I got home one of the the left carb boots had raw gas running down it. What is tke likely cause and repair. Thanks

Best of luck Don, will be praying for you, hope for a fast recovery.

I just checked the assembly manual and the owners manual, see below for what I found. Assembly Manual: M. Front Fork Adjustment 1.0 Elevate the front wheel by placing a suitable stand under the engine. NOTE: When checking and adjusting the air pressure there should be no weight on the front end of the motorcycle. N. Rear Shock absorber adjustment 1.0 Elevate the front wheel by placing a suitable stand under the engine. NOTE: When checking and adjusting the air pressure there should be no weight on the rear end of the motorcycle. Owners Manual Adjusting the front fork Adjust the spring rate as follows. 1. Place the vehicle on the side stand. NOTE: When checking and adjusting the air pressure there should be no weight on the vehicle. Adjusting the shock absorber assembly This shock absorber assembly is equipped with an air valve for adjusting the spring rate. Adjust the spring rate as follows. 1. Place the vehicle on the side stand. NOTE: When checking and adjusting the air pressure there should be no weight on the vehicle. Ater getting two different sets of instructions I was afraid to look at the maint manual, my life is complicated enough, I do not need to know if there is a third method. I will say this, I am not a fan of setting the shock or the forks to 0 psi when the bike is on the side stand. My thought is if they are at 0 psi with the weight of the bike on them, if the shock of forks are ever extended, while riding or servicing there will be a potential for a slight negitive pressure to be created in the shock / fork. This could allow moist air to enter the air chamber. I normally run 7 psi in the forks and 30 in the rear shock.
