  1. Hi, my friend with XVZ13 Venture has following problem: his motorcycle is lugging at acceleration from 2000 - 2500RPM to full throttle values from dynojet (gauged at 37.500 mil, now drived 38.000 mil): - 95 nm - 77 HP Others data: - compression: 13 - 14 atm - new carburettor membranes (main and acceleration) - new plugs - new filters (fuel, air) - underpressure OK - exhaust gas oxygen sensor 1,100 +- - CO2 1,2 Any ideas are welcome. Best regards, Jarda Horak
  2. I have just recently begun to experience a jump or pop from the drivetrain under moderately heavy acceleration. I first thought it was coming from the rear end as I have had it happen in both first and second gear. Nothing is whining or grinding. I pulled the final drive apart after work and no problems there. I am now beginning to suspect the middle gears may be jumping a tooth under acceleration, but from everything that I have read so far they rarely have problems. I am open to any suggestions.
  3. I have an 83 venture that I still can not get running correctly. Looking for ideas and things to check and how. If I come around corner and accelerate it may “pop” back once or twice and then kick in. Problem seems to gets worse as the bike gets hotter. But is sluggish and “pops” under acceleration then takes off. Notice the problems seem to drop off and the beast has new power at about 3100 RPM. IF you lower the rpms to around 2500 RPM it really loads up. To start it up I seem to have the best luck choking it and then moving the to the right to almost no choke and it will finally kick in. Idle is a little unsteady but not too bad. History 1. Cleaned the carbs a couple of times. Had slider and stuck float this week and there are both fixed. Idle screws are set at 2 turns out, Have also tried 1 ½ turns out. Tried smaller shims and bike run worse so reinstalled original shims in sliders. Rechecked the float levels. 3. Set the valves last year and several were too tight. 4. New plug wires and caps and plugs last year. 6. Have after market TCI using the stock program. about 1 ½ year ago NO MAPP sensor. Basically does the same things with the original TCI in place. 7. Sync;d carbs several times and again last night. Run about 6 inch at 1000RPM . 8. YICS was removed last year. 9. Gas mileage is under 30 MPG. 10. Have spark on all cylinders. 11. Every once in a while running down the road it will stumble but come right back. Thank in advance for the advice
  4. I have a 96 Royal Star Tour Classic i bought about 6months ago and it has developed a new noise. It sounds like a tire or [ame=http://www.starbikeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=873#]belt[/ame] rubbing, but only when I coast or decelerate i in gear with the clutch out. i have read the vast array of threads about "chirping" and "whining" because of the gears and clutch basket, but all these mention the noise in acceleration and not deceleration. i don't have that problem, on when coasting or slowing down. I would greatly appreicate any help or advice. Thanks, Sam p.s. i should note that I have already changed the oil, and the final drive hypoid oil, both with no change to the noise.
  5. HI Guys just bought a 08 venture 40,000k PROBLEM is during acceleration or going up hills in cruise it stumbles vibrates and chugs in 4 or 5th 80- 100k/when i crack the throttle with out going to 3rd not much power! Sounds and feels terrible vibration is this carb syncing???I have bubs which i repacked sounds wicked thanks for reading this ANY help would be great! thanks RUSSLightwing
  6. After I did the carb sync, the bike now vibratres quite bad upon hard acceleration in any gear. Any ideas?
  7. 86VR, was running rough on acceleration, took carbs off, professionally cleaned, new gaskets, I installed new diaphrams, replaced a frayed cable. Acceleration problem solved. Engine runs very good! Engine idles very smooth. The problem now is that the engine doesn't come down off revs fast enough. This creates obvious problems when shifting and coming to a stop. The throttle grip moves freely, it springs back nicely; but the engine stays reving for 3-5 seconds falling down very slowly until it reaches about 2000rpm where upon it quickly falls to idle like it should. I've checked that everything is property seated. All hoses and caps are good, properly attached. I've check for air leaks around the boots and the airbox. I've triple checked the junction box, cables moving freely. I've moved cable adjustments to each extreme and back. Is this just need of a carb tune? HELP!
  8. I have been reading about changing to a VMAX gear, just wondering is it worth it? Would like to have a little more acceleration but do not want to loose to much gas milage, is this possible?
  9. Hello all, Thanks in advance for your help. I've got an '84 XVZ1200. I've owned it about 3 years. This season, it started doing something weird the 3rd or 4th time I had it out. As a result, I haven't been able to ride much this year. It's taken me a few rides to get things narrowed down, as it was fairly intermittent. When: Under light acceleration, no problems. Under moderate acceleration, it happens occasionally in 1st and 2nd. Under heavy acceleration, it happens repeatedly during acceleration through 3rd gear. I have eventually narrowed it down to a position of the throttle. "What" happens: I describe it as a lurch. Although, the lurch is the result of the engine dying for a split second, followed by a quick rebound when it starts going again. When I say the engine dies, I mean all 4 cylinders loose power (not a gradual power lag). My initial guess was fuel starvation, perhaps from gummed up jets, etc in the carb. But, after running 2 tanks with half a can of Sea Foam each, there was no change whatsoever. (I understand Sea Foam won't fix everything for sure... it may well be clogged.) I then started to rule this out because of discovering the quick, repeated jolts under hard acceleration later on (see below for "speed"). As a result, I started leaning towards an ignition problem. Its as if the coil(s) run out of spark. What strikes me as weird is that if I run the RPM's up slowly, I can get it to redline without a problem... the engine runs normal all the way up. So, it seems as if ignition is working OK under load (at high RPM). So, this brings me back to a fuel problem. Are there accelerator pumps in these carbs that might be failing (I assume not)? I'm still surprised that the fuel could "recover" if there is a momentary starvation so quickly with the speed of repeated jolts. To give you an idea of the "speed" of these jolts: If I rail on the throttle, I would guess it gets as "violent" as 4 times per second in the 2000-5000 RPM range, and weaning off to 1 time per second nearing redline. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Many thanks in advance for your help! Regards, Scott
  10. Hello motorcycle brothers and sisters. Iam new to this forum so please be gentle. I own a 1998 royal star tour deluxe with 12,500 miles that i bought used last year. It has a shudder while shifting through the gears on hard acceleration and in od on moderate to heavy acceleration from 50 mph. The clutch is not slipping has plenty of power but shudder's,you can feel it in the seat and handle bars. Did not know if this is nature of the beast for that year or if i am having issues. It has done this from day one. Any help on this would fantastic or if anyone else has had this problem.
  11. Well, I guess I need to replace my steering head bearings. I had the wobble at 80mph or so, and I tightened up the steering head a little. Now, the wobble is much better, but the steering response is way too sensitive now. It kind of feels like my tires are one inch wide now, and the bike teeters all over the place. Any small amount of input from me, and it overcorrects badly. I am constantly correcting back and forth when I am trying to cruise along. At acceleration, it is great, and as I said the wobble problem isn't near as bad. The bars aren't tight feeling either, just squirrelly. Sound like maybe new bearings and races will cure this?
  12. I have just purchased one with 15k on it. It has the Jardine pipes. We just went to thunder beach and wow what a time. The bike on acceleration in all gears, until cruising, has a vibration on acceleration. I know it could be a hundred things, but is there a quick and dirty list I could check? I put new plugs in it. Thanks for the help.
  13. I have been riding for about a month on my first bike, an 83 Venture, and have had more problems than I thought I would,.... The most recent is this throttle problem. I was driving home when all of a sudden my throttle started just revving itself. When I don't pull at all, it idles normally, but when I pull it back, even the tiniest amount, it just starts going up and up and up. As you can imagine, my last few blocks home were exciting. Luckily, not pulling at all it does what it's supposed to do, and the clutch is working fine,.. If it wasn't for those two thing I probably would have taken a quick trip into something solid, and heavy,.... perhaps a car,.... Anyways, as I said, I'm new to motorcycle, so any and all details would be appreciated,.. ~Tobias P.S. I'm also poor, and want to do this myself, as opposed to a shop,.... Or if anyone is in Austin, TX, and wants dinner, and to help a new rider, that'd be even better!!! And there are a couple of other small problems, like the turn signals working sometimes and not others, that I could use some help on,... P.P.S. This is my only form of transportation & way to work, so the sooner I can get it running good enough, the better. Thanks! ~Tobias

    VMAX

Check out Motorcycle Daily for first ride on new VMAX. Yes it still has the kick in the pants acceleration at 6500 rpm. tew47
  15. My 07 RSV has got a nasty bad whine, around 40 -50 mph its the worst. the farther you lean the worse it gets and if you pull in the clutch you can feel a slight vibration in the floorboards too. I have got 3800 miles on it now. I'm not sure it is gear noise due to the fact that the noise does not change on coast or acceleration. the noise only gets louder when leaning. This makes me think it has more to do with the axle bearings. I will be taking it in later this week. Do any of these symptoms match what any of you that have had final drive issues? Ken C.
  16. I put a new battery in my 2003 Saturday. It seems it runs better with more acceleration. Is there any chance the two things are related?

    Speedo Malfunction?

My '08 Venture Speedometer kinda "flicks" from one speed reading up to the next, as in "jumpy". Is this normal? I'm used to them working in a smooth manner up and down the indicated speed. I only notice it on acceleration.
  18. My 86 Venture Royale will not go much above 5500 to 6000 rpm in 4th and 5th gear. It seems to hit a wall and won't go any faster. Can anyone suggest what the cause is and how to fix it. Is it a timing problem or weak valve springs causing the valves to float at high rpm? Otherwise the motor starts right away, runs very smoothly. I am probably not getting the acceleration that I should at the lower range but as this is my first Venture I have nothing to compare it with. At this time, my V-Star 1100 Classic has far more top end. Help!!
