How many miles do you have on the spark plugs? I changed mine at 11,000 miles just because the manual says to change them at 8,000 and they are cheap. I couldn't believe it, but my mileage jumped a good 10%. Just put in the standard NGK (came with Denso)

I've been Accessorizing
Leland replied to Leland's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Joe, Sorry about the delay, just saw this. The windshield in that picture is a Clearview www.clearviewshields.com/ . Stock height with vent and "recurve". I'm 5'8" and that shield was just too tall. Plus, I couldn't stand the recurve. With the shield being too tall for me, looking through the recurve caused a distorted view. Actually gave me a headache. I ended up cutting off 4½" off of the bottom of the shield (basically cut it off just above the vent) and this was better. I ended up buying a new Clearview 3" shorter than stock with NO recurve and no vent (with light gray tint). I am now a happy camper. -
You think that the lack of manufacturing in this country is bad now, just wait and see what happens if the "Cap and Trade" bill passes the Senate. The companies that have stuck it out here will be making a bee line for China and India.

The Best Fuel
Leland replied to ManWithAVision's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Speedometers are typically off 7% to 8%, but the odometers are pretty close. If you "Speed-O-Healer", your speedometer will read correctly, but your odometer will read low. -

Some Tips on Changing the 2nd Gen Coolant
Leland replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I removed the floor board to gain access to remove the water pump drain plug. Won't be removing that plug again anytime soon. Only about a ¼ cup of AF drained out of it after all of that. -
The "Butler Brake Mod", provided by Rick Butler on this site works great on the RSTD also. Maybe even better since there is less weight on the rear of the RSTD.

Except you can't collect unemployment.

I did mine and I think with the filler neck, it has the same results as a RSV. The most fuel that I have ever put in is 4.7 gallon. Manual says max is 5.3 gallon.
-
That's what I thought also, but with only 11,000 miles on my RSTD, I decided to go ahead and change the plugs even though the bike was running fine. Couldn't believe it, but my gas mileage increased 10%. Replaced stock Denso plugs with NGK. And even though the bike was not hard to start before, it now starts even better now.

'06 RSTD. I measured 13½" from the center of the mounting bolt to where the pad first touches the floor.

Graingers has Loctite-DuPont Krytox RFE, Part # 29711, Grainger #4XZ69. I bought a two oz. tube last year for $41.25 (before I knew about Honda Moly 60. I see in this years' catalog that it is $53.15, WTF - that's almost a 25% increase. Only have about 2000 miles on it, but rear is quiet. But it was quiet before I applied.

Getting Ready to ride north, to the Arctic Circle
Leland replied to JeffC's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Use the "Auxiliary DC connector", page 3-21 of the owners manual to power terminals 86 & 85 of the relay in the above link. Just cut that worthless plug off and wire directly to the relay coil.- 17 replies

Are you looking for the RSV pillow tops mainly for your passenger's comfort? The alternative is the "Butt Butler" modification to the standard RSTD seats offered on this site by Rick Butler. Highly recommended. We were suppose to get snow also, but apparently the storm tracked further north. We just got a few clouds and wind down here (Denver area).
-
Rick's mod has my endorsement also. Very comfortable. Kind of reminds me of the spring loaded "buddy" seat on my old '66 FLH. You just kind of float on it.

Goose, while riding in the cold weather, did you have your carb heaters turned on? I know that you installed a switch and was just wondering what your experience was. Thanks for all of your posts.

Kuryakyn battery charge indicator
Leland replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
As a test, hook it right to the battery and see what it shows. Verify voltage at battery with a decent volt meter. This will tell you if Kuryakin is good or bad. -

Clearview Windshields
Leland replied to YamaDuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Never is a long time. I just bought a Clearview and they called to tell me that they forgot to ship the lowers before I even had the box opened. Of course they sent them right out. I have attached Clearview's maintenance instructions.- 26 replies

Still having problems with my RSTD OEM seat Corbin/Mustang
Leland replied to a topic in Watering Hole
Have you tried the Rick Butler "Butt Butler" mod? Had him do mine, but it has been too cold (and way to much gravel on the roads) to try it, but they sure look good. Rick goes to great lengths to reduce the tailbone pressure. Plus it's a lot cheaper than new seats. -
I think that Traffic and Weather are provided together. On the Zumo main screen, touch the wrench icon (lower right corner), scroll down to "Services" to "Traffic Source". Insure that the XM is selected.

There is no "Northrop, CO" listed in the '07 Rand McNally road atlas.
