Riding so. Utah is a great trip. We spent a week riding part of it in June and another few days in September in Arches. I'm not sure how your getting to southern Utah but I would start in St. George. Lots of hotels to fit most price ranges. Only 8 miles south of the gateway (Hwy 9) to get to Zions and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (300 miles approx round trip). Lots of local and national eateries. From the North Rim you could go through Tuba City and Kayenta into southeastern Utah (Blanding etc) up to Moab where you can visit Canyonlands, Arches and Dead Horse Point State Park (not covered by the National Park Pass). Hotels in Moab can be pricy in my opinion but camping is reasonable, we usually stay at the Arch View Campground. The road up to Dead Horse Point and Canyonlands is almost across the road from the campground. There are some great restaurants and shops in Moab. Next I'd take I70, then south to Hanksville and on to Glen Canyon. This is the about the only way in or out. To bad you can't tow a boat with you. Hotels and eateries are limited in Hanksville. Next you could make your way back to Bryce Canyon. You can stay at Ruby's Inn. Nice hotel or campground. This is a small "town". Bryce Canyon is not a very long stop. You can visit it in just a couple hours easily. You might consider visiting Bryce's as a side trip after Zions one day. That might be the most reasonable way rather than backtracking south from I70. Hwy 12, mentioned above is right past Bryce Canyon. Alternative - St. George, Zions, Bryce Canyon, North Rim, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point, and Arches. Hope you have a great trip and stop by SLC if you get a chance. Dave

Great to have you back!!

The stock antenna are sub-standard to say the least, and a used one would be more suspect. Like was said, buy a Firestick with a tunable tip and install it in place of the stock. You'll be much happier. Dave

I use quickbooks but not the budgeting. I found this on the web, maybe it will help: http://community.intuit.com/posts/entering-budget-2# Dave

Lots of great things to see on your route through Utah. I'm in the Salt Lake City area and would love to meet up as well (we can point you to Paul too). Let us know if we need to make up the spare room. Going through Flagstaff gives you a great reason to go through Zion's National Park. Have a great trip! Dave

I removed then both at the same time also. There are four bolts that hold each saddlebag to the frame. Remove them and the bags are free. Next twist and remove the turn signal sockets from the housing just above the exhausts. Slide the bags back and off the rear of the bike. You have to carefully flex them outward a little bit and they'll come off. Put them back on by reversing the process. Pay attention to the rubber grommets coming off and back on. Dave

Paul let me know he's "free"! He was being discharged from the hospital this morning and on the way home. Dave

George- You'll love the clearview shield. They make a great product! John is a pleasure to work with too. Dave

We were going to see Paul for dinner on Tuesday night but he could make because he was ill and a little dizzy. The flu has been going around here and nobody thought much about it. Last night his sweet wife took him into the hospital and they found a golf ball size, nonmalignant tumor in his stomach. Needless to say, they kept him for a little under the hood tune up work. They schedule surgery for this afternoon. I stopped in to see him first thing this morning and the nurse was getting him ready to go to surgery, schedule changed. After a few minutes of chatting, I rode down the elevator with him to the surgical wing. He had reached his wife and she was on the way to be with him. The faith and prayers of those here would be appreciated. Dave (Utadventure)

Carb swap compatibility
utadventure replied to spitfire9's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You should have good success with the carbs. In 2008 I was heading to Boise, ID for a rally and my carbs started leaking. I still had the original carbs that were on that engine, I swapped the carb set out and it all worked great. It wasn't until I got back that I realized that the second carb set was the smaller diameter used on the 1200s. Good Luck! Dave -
It appears that the issues with accessing the internet are limited to the one laptop. I would suspect the NIC or motherboard or browser is having issues. Your tests so far seem to be using a browser. A couple of test without the browser: go START > RUN> CMD This will bring up a DOS window. type "ipconfig" This will bring up the ip information for the laptop. Using the functioning computer, do the same. Compare the two sets of numbers....all should be the same except the last number of the IP Address (192.168.0.???) the IP address on the laptop needs to be consistent with the network or it cannot reach outside the router. Next: type "ping www.google.com" you should receive 4 responses... or 4 failures. This is a simple test to see if you are reaching outside your home. Hope this helps! Dave

Saturday I got to take a ride I've wanted to do for a while over Wolf Creek pass (Hwy 35 from Woodland to Hanna, UT). What a great ride and the colors are in the midst of changing. Just off of the Hwy is Mill Hollow Reservoir. Jan and I worked at a school education camp by the reservoir, when we met 33 years ago. The guy I was riding with asked if I had ever been up that road.....YES!!! Even though it was gravel road with washboards, we went the three miles up and back. What great memories. We have a painting of the lake from the same perspective as the attached picture. http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/MillHollow_zpse74f96d1.jpg http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/MillHollow2_zps1111a1dd.jpg

CB Bad???
utadventure replied to justfun1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mike- When I first got my '86, other riders could hardly hear anything I was saying. I could hear just fine. It had a stock antenna and I started test things just like you have. The antenna length includes the cable, splitter in this case, and the actual antenna. Still didn't work. I replaced it with another stock antenna....same problem. Usually, off the chart SWR readings, means a ground in the system. I finally did the marshall mod, kind of. FYI, the radio itself has resistance. Be sure to disconnect the radio before testing. Also, the antenna system length is mostly relevant when transmitting. I eliminated the splitter and installed an aftermarket antenna with a cable directly to the radio. Better, but still the same basic issues. Next, I swapped out the antenna for the Firestik with the adjustable tip....not an issue since. I have a 6' cable from the antenna to the radio. Getting the antenna, mounting lug and making or buying a short cable isn't overly expensive and most can be returned if it just won't work. Good luck!- 17 replies

Plenty of fuel stations in and around Moab. Let me know you're potential route and I'll let you know some refueling options. Dave

We celebrated our 33rd Anniversary on Friday. Boy is she patient! We honeymooned in Arches National Park and decided to return again this year. We rode down on Friday and stayed at the Archview Resort. I've wanted to ride through Arches on the bikes for a few years now. There is also Canyonlands Nat'l Park and Dead Horse State Park nearby, so we decided to take a ride Friday evening up to the other parks and then go to Arches on Saturday morning. Dead Horse we great and then Canyonlands had some beautiful scenery and great, twisty roads to ride. Saturday morning we rode through Arches and it was as good as I had hoped! We didn't get to take all the pictures we wanted to, but got a bunch. Hope you can enjoy them too. http://s470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/2012%20Anniversary%20-%20Moab/ Dave

Dick- One of the guys in our group here in the SL area added an aftermarket CB to his Goldwing earlier this summer. I will probably see him at our dinner on Tuesday night. It was an after market unit, mounted under the liner inside the trunk and wired (plugged in) to pre-wired connectors under the seat. We had to dig a bit to find the connectors. He then used the onboard computer to activated. I ask him for the details if I see him Tuesday or give him a call if he doesn't come. Dave

Brake light not working
utadventure replied to ormond18's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Start with the simple. Light bulb first, check the fuse for the tail light. If that isn't it, that's when the fun begins. Dave- 3 replies

Based on the info.....I would suspect that prior to failure of the fuel pump, your motor was starving for fuel (small degree) at times. Dave
-
Sorry to here it went south on you. Sounds like you have an ootion to get it back together.

I didn't have the priviledge of knowing Mark. Our love, condolences and prayers go out to is family. Dave

Or that.

Without going out to look.....I believe the top fuse goes to the stud/bolt at the top of the fuse box for accessories. Dave The repair manual does show the fuse you refer to is for the accessories. I suspect that one of the accessories is going to ground. Disconnect the wires and test each wire for continuity to ground. Good luck!!
