  1. The '84 I have (Alan has) from my limited time on it got in the 38-41 MPG range. That should give you about 160 miles before hitting the reserve area of the tank. Usually fills back up with around 4.3 gallons at that point. The red reserve light will come on when the final bar on the gas gauge goes off, so....each bike will be a little different as to whether you are still on the main tank or into the reserve area. Your test with the petcock in the main position should answer that question. Like many others, I run mine in the reserve position and start looking for a fuel stop (but relief stop) when the light comes on. The furthest I've gone on my '86 (1300 engine) is 175 miles before getting gas. That had me worried a bit. Dave
  2. Andy- What MPG are you getting and at what speed? Are the sliders moving? You can see them move by lifting off the air cleaner cover and looking down into the carbs. If not gently pry them back with a screwdriver to free them up. They may be stuck a bit. Don't try to just pull them out from the diaphram side, you're likely to break the slider. The '84 usually gets pretty good mileage. If you don't you may consider doing the carb needle shim modification. Some early carbs had an adjustment on the needles but the latter Ventures can be adjusted by changing the thickness of the washers on the needles. It's easier than you might think and it's done by removing the diaphrams. Just search for the mod here on the website. You can also adjust the mixture screws on the outside of the carbs, centered under the diaphram covers. They may be behind a plug. Good luck! Dave
  3. I haven't tried it but would suspect that it would. You would still need the amp in order to connect the CB and headset. You could possibly link your new stereo into the amp (challenge: new stereo would already have an amp) in still benefit from the override stategy of the Venture. If you're not thrilled with the OEM set up, a great alternative is the JMCB-2003 in single or dual (intercom). It doesn't have "radio" but hooks up to your IPOD/MP3 player and sounds very good and still provides CB communication. Have one on my wife's Harley and she loves it. Dave
  4. The stock antenna is for both the radio and CB and has a splitter on the CB side inside the fairing. Many, including me, have done the Marshall mode and installed separate antennas. This has worked much better for me. I first bought an OEM antenna and the CB was still spotty. Once I installed the two antennas (firestick on the CB), it's worked great. Also an issue with the radio, the radio connector is on the bottom of the radio and sets down into the matching portion. Over time the the connector in the left fairing tends to sag a bit and good contact isn't made, resulting in the radio cutting in and out. Something more for you to check out. Dave
  5. Jerry- It's a beautiful bike you have. Last year I had the privilege of reworking a bike for Alan (Quickstep) from Australia. with the damage the picture shows, I'd slightly open the crack and with ABS glue, seal the crack. Then I would use fiberglass and strengthen the damaged area on the back side and filling in the missing area. Finally, I add some bondo on the front area and prep for paint. On my '86, I was able to take the panel to the local auto paint company and they scanned the panel and provided matching paint. Should turn out great!! Dave
  6. They must have slipped through the cracks....
  7. Glad you got her fired up and out for a ride!! When you changed the fluid in the rear brakes, did you bleed the rear brake, front left brake and the valve up by the steering head? That makes a huge difference. Dave
  8. Sportster has solid motor mounts, is air cooled and the top end will need going through at about 40k. I pretty sure the V-Star is water cooled but will have less power and will be more maint free. Also will have cheaper farkles. Go for the V-Star!
  9. 1980 Kawasaki KZ250 @ 21 yo. Jan & I bought it off the showroom floor. Dave
  10. Congrats on a great looking bike. You'll love the ride!! Dave
  11. Would that be considered a 1st or 2nd Gen??? :rotf:

  13. Sounds like time to visit your family in Detroit:cool10::cool10:
  14. Second vote for the DEKA battery!! Dave
  15. Another great source of training is your local CERT program. Dave
  16. Simplest check.... volt meter on the battery. A fully charged battery should be 12.6 volts DC. With the bike running (2000 rpm or so) you should be reading between 13.0-13.5 volts DC. If you don't get 13.0 + something is wrong. If you do, leave it hooked up, if you can, and go for a short ride and see if it maintains. 13 - 13.5 - Probably your battery above or below - Probably your regulator/rectifyer or stator. Dave
  17. I mentioned this in your other thread, but, in the long run it would be less frustrating, more reliable and maybe even more cost effective to install a JMCB2003. For less than $400.00 you get a new CB, intercom and mp3 port for music. You don't have to count on 25 yo audio system working. IMHO Dave
  18. See the other post.... If you don't already have the base audio system. Spend your money and time putting in a JMCB2003. Why tie your music/communications to something 25 years old (plus or minus). I added one to my wife's Harley and it works fantastic. Dave
  19. i read your post earlier and have been thinking about it. If you already have the Venture amp and radio/intercom, adding the CB won't really benefit much from changing the harness. To add the CB you need a power source (not necessary to be within the harness), then connect it to the already existing amp (that controls the overrides) and the antenna (also not part of the harness) My son added the complete Venture audio (from and '86) to the '83 he had for a while and just added the necessary wiring to the existing harness. He's very talented that way. Good Luck! Dave
  20. It sounds like you've got it dialed in pretty well. The fluctuation (my guesses) could be minor vacuum leak, pinholes in the diaphrams or the air box not seated completely. Good Luck Dave
  21. Hang in there!! It will be a great improvement in your life, besides, you have all of us behind you. Dave
  22. AGM - Absorbed Glass Mat Jack (Condor) - has made some heavier fork braces. Well worth the investment. Dave
  23. Welcome to the forum!! These bikes are great. 1. Might upgrade to an AGM battery. May need to install a larger positive battery cable. Make sure the grounds are good. 2. Rebuild the forks. Ditto the Progressive springs and the Condor brace. 3. Ditto 4. Do the Seafoam, make sure the carbs are sync'd and then adjust the idle screw 6. The '84 I redid last year had the same issue. Unless you're planning on regularly removing the trunk, I'd install some U bolts to secure the trunk to the rack and move on. 8. Might want to check the oil, may need a change. Dave
  24. If I remember correctly, there isn't a "kit" available, you have to purchase the parts separately. Clean it well. You might not need any internal parts. Remove the diaphrams and check them for rips or pinholes. Pinholes can be fixed but tears should be replaced. There was a special price worked out for replacements. A little searching will find them on the site. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32943 While you have it apart, you might want to adjust the needles. This can improve the fuel mileage. Again, if you needles don't have adjusters, you can change it changing the washers. There are instruction on the site also. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=28432&highlight=needle+shim Dave
  25. We changed Sam's out while still in the bike (instructions here in the tech section). With the top part of the fork secured, you can pull down on the lower half and using an impact wrench you can remove the bolt. To replace the bolt, you can put the handle of a broom into the bottom and while having someone apply pressure, you can reinstall the bolt and tighten. Good luck! Dave Wish I was back in Tucson, I'd be glad to help.
