Problems with clutch
utadventure replied to Lassesand's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is more drastic an idea, but, if the bike sat unused for that long, who knows what may be built up on the internal clutch parts. Even if you changed the oil, which I suspect you did, it may be worthwhile to add some seafoam to the oil, run the bike for 150 miles or so and then change the oil again. Good luck!! Dave -
Seeing a parent, or other loved one, in pain is difficult but knowing that their suffering is done is a great relief. Although missed, they are at peace. We will keep your mother and your family in our thoughts and prayers. Dave & Jan

I replaced the battery in the '86 two years ago with an AGM from Bohannon a Battery and have quickly become a fan! Good luck. Dave

I wish we could get Salt Lake on the list....any ideas??

Just let me know how I can help! Dave

Sounds like a great thing to do. Let me know if you can stop by SLC on your way. I found this video the other day talking about many of the great National Parks there are in southern Utah. Most are easily reached from your planned route. Dave http://www.youtube.com/attribution_link?a=AOU2Yxz-g5Q&u=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DSJl96LZ-CWI%26feature%3Dshare

14k on the Metz rear is a lot. I've gone through 2 Metz rears and changed them at about 11k each. When the 3rd Metz through a chunk after 1k, I switched to the Michelin Commanders. I only have a few 100 miles on them but they have been nice! I would stick with the EBC brakes. I tried another brand and they squeaked at the end of each stop. I have had no issues replacing he pads with each rear tire. Good luck!

The carbs have a couple of hoses on them. If they are the float bowl drains then they come out the sides and slide through brackets near the top of the carb. Those hose look more like the overflow drain hoses. They typically would run out the top, back of the carbs, between the rear cylinders and down coming out of the frame just in from of the rear wheel. Dave

1st gen gas leak when running
utadventure replied to Iron Horse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My '86 did the same for a little bit. A short blast of air back through the offending carb tube and the overflow stopped. Dave -
Got my first opportunity to ride a 2nd Gen Venture ('99) this afternoon. The bike has a 150mm Pirelli tire on the front. At first the bike felt a little catchy once I started riding but smoothed out once the tires got warmed up. For years I've heard about the slow speed handling in parking lots etc. It seemed/felt to me like the front wheel closer to me (lower rake) than the '86 I'm use to riding. It also felt like it wanted to keep turning tighter in slower corners like from one street to another. This was noticable more on the right hand turns that where typically slower, tighter turns to begin with. Is this the same thing you've been talking about in parking lots and such? The Pirelli's are a softer rubber so I don't think it will be too long before I'll need a new front tire. I'm already thinking to try the 130mm. Dave

I'm having a sudden urge to find the magic markers....... Heal up quickly Jeff.
-
Sorry for your pain. I hope you heal quickly and can get out and ride. All the pain, none of the fun.

I have it on my '86 and really enjoy it. Dave -
So sorry for your loss. Keep the good memories alive and she'll never really be gone. You're in our thoughts and prayers. Dave

No start

Have you checked the other fuses? There is a second set of fuses tucked up behind the battery. The constant power for the audio system may go through it. -
Salt Lake is on the way if you want to make a stop. Dave

If there isn't anything urgent causing your desired check over, I'd plan on attending Freebird's maintainence day in early June. You can get meet some of the greatest people and there will be others there that can help you with the bike. Someday I'll get to join the group! Dave

I'm glad you have the upgraded fuse block. This is still the diagnostic point I would start at. If power is not getting to or through the block, you've narrowed the search area. If it is, then you can start to trace it out. -

Do you still have the original fuse block in your '86? Check the power voltage on both sides of the fuses at the wires, not the holders. The holders weaken and break over time and you may not be getting full power through the block. Dave -
Looks great Annie......but I bet you still put your helmet on.

I watched the weather report last night about how cold parts of the US is. Salt Lake is no where near as cold as other areas, but this morning I woke up thinking (dangerous, I know)... After enjoying the riding season last fall, the time came to put the bike away until spring. Last fall I had gotten hot and added some WATER to the overflow while out. I awoke last night wondering if the coolant in the bike was enough to prevent freezing? I came home from work today, checked the reservoir, mostly empty, I checked the radiator and it was liquid (good). I added Prestone to the reservoir and topped off the radiator, then brought the bike up to operating temp.....no leaks.....now I know and a little more anti-freeze is in the system. I still look forward to spring getting here soon. I hate it sometimes when I think..... Dave

I haven't ridden much on the Pirellis but I do know that they are a softer rubber than what you're use to with the Metzlers. I'm sure that has contributed to what you're feeling. Might try some different air pressures to reduce it. You'll also probably need to replace the tires somewhere around the 6K miles mark, as they wear faster. I was on my 4th set of Metz when the rear threw a couple of chunks after only about 2k miles. Loved them but went to a Michelin for now. Keep an eye on them. Dave

If I'm able to attend, I won't know until the last minute but I would still be available to assist with putting things together! Dave

I have friends that got the UCLEAR and said it worked great for them. They are both on Harleys and both have full face helmets. You may get different feed back on 3/4 helmets.

Just a quick look at the Sena SM10 leads me to believe you could connect the Yamaha into it via the 5 pin adapter but would only have sound because the other end only is a 3.5mm stereo plug. You wouldn't have the ability to transmit! You could hear the CB but not respond back.
