Did you run the bike for a few minutes before checking the oil level? After the put oil in the bike, the new filter is still empty and the volume in it could be the problem. Dave

Spark plug R&R
utadventure replied to dna9656's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Really a pretty easy process, after removing the side panels. 1 Shift or remove the plastic heat shields out of the way. 2 With a compressor or can of air, blow out any debris from the spark plug wells 3 Lift off the plug wires 4 I use a spark plug socket (i got mine from the dealer) that fits plug on one end and can be turned with a 14mm ratcheting wrench on the top end. 5 Gap the new plug and replace the cap. Repeat for the other three plugs. 6 Replace the heat shields. Good luck!! -
With or without 2 wheels, no need to change your name or go anywhere. Glad you're home.

I believe that Jack's point is that IF someone wants/needs a fork brace, they likely aren't going to go looking for someone on the site that might provide it at a reasonable price when a banner can lead them to, or recommend, an outside vendor. I don't know the answer but I think I understand the frustration. I didn't know Jack or that he had braces available when I paid full price for the Super Brace I have on the 86. Dave

You're hooked....you can't get away!

I'm glad you're getting the bike how you want it. One reason I've liked the Venture vs. the Harley, is the air cooled/water cooled difference. I'm glad to see them moving into the water cooled bike world....but I looks to have its challenges. Who knows, maybe I'll have one of those also. Great looking bike!! Dave

Help diagnosing problem
utadventure replied to Ventureless's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Just my simple thoughts.... If you are leaving the choke on and it runs better (reducing the amount of air in the carbs) then you are possibly running to lean and adjusting the fuel mix screws and increase the fuel in the system. Dave -
Hesitation
utadventure replied to phoenix rider's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Did you sync the carbs after the rebuild? Could be out of wack or have a small vacuum leak or loose fitting carb boot. Dave -
Some are just hiding in the shadows.....or shortly under the snowfall.

It's a great look.....snicker, snicker.

Planning a repaint
utadventure replied to Ballplayer60410's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My son repainted his '83 and did a great job. I have an '86 Black/Gold Venture, he liked the gold but wanted something else instead of the black. He decided on maroon. The bike paint turned out great, unfortunately, when it was done was when we realized that the bike should now be turned over to Iron Man. Have fun and don't forget the pics! Dave -
When you do try moving the slides....do it from the inside of the carbs by prying outward. Pulling or twisting can result in a broken slide....experience is a cruel teacher. Dave

Voltage reading question
utadventure replied to easy-rogere's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Without knowing exactly where you're attaching the leads when testing, I would guess you don't have a major electrical issue, just an issue with the radio. I would suspect a couple of things on the 1st Gen with the radio. 1 - power - the old glass type fuses on this bikes have an issue where the holder (not the fuse) can lose it's connection and cause the power to cut in and out. The holders have been known to actually break off. Upgrade the fuse holder if you can. 2 - radio connector - this is a likely culprit to your issue. The radio sits down into a connector. As the 1st gens get older the plastic the receiving connector is mounted on can start to flex or sag. This can cause the connection to not be complete and to disconnect, especially while riding down the road or over bumps. You can look into shimming the connector up a little bit and see if the issues go away. Good Luck!! Dave -
Glad to hear Lowell it still kickin' around. Tell him that means there is still time for Jan to marry him for his money.:rotf: Please say hello from the Harris'! Dave & Jan

Just a little bit further than we thought. 11,386 in the rain??? May you have dry riding weather at home!

I've had my '86 have an audible boiling when I part the bike on a hot day. It's typical for the bike to run up just shy of the red area in hot stop and go conditions. The puddle on the floor could still be from an overfilled condition given the temps. As far the drain outlet position, some one else will chime in and give you better direction. Enjoy your trip! Dave

It's 6:30 here and Alan and Annie have just left for Portland. Ride safe! What a special couple they are and we are so grateful to have had the pleasure and privilege of having them share our home, their spirit and, of course, the stories. Until we can ride together again....farewell (for now). Dave & Jan P.S. Sorry about the rain, I tried to reschedule it but no one is listening to me.

Congrats on the new arrival. Give the lot a basketball and you're ready to start winning games! -
Had a wonderful dinner at Pasta Jay's with Alan and Annie last night. Today, we're heading to see Canyonlands Nat'l Park, Dead Horse State Park, and Arches Nat'l Park. It's amazing have such beauty all close together.

Jan and I had the pleasure of getting to know Don earlier this year and couldn't miss out on spending time remembering this special person. We took the opportunity to wander down memory lane a little bit too. 34 years ago we were working at the Mill Hollow Education Center (a mountain based science camp for elementary kids) in the Uintah Mountains and were two weeks away from getting married. A lot has changed and sadly, the pine beatles have devastated the trees in the area. We took the car today because of rain, dirt road to the Center and the car needed to get out of stop and go traffic. What a nice day!! Thanks Don for the inspiration and the great memories. http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/photobucket-54446-1377982387217_zps6412c3a5.jpg http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/photobucket-11748-1377982362499_zpsc8a1859f.jpg

Any gypsum product (drywall) will eventually absorb enough moisture to cause it to breakdown. Green should help but it's designed mostly to repel surface water not ambient. Use green board, over a vapor barrier, and make sure you seal all joints (especially cuts) and a good paint job. That should outlive you! I have a cabin in Utah and don't heat it at all during the winter if we aren't there and it gets below 0 often. Good Luck! Dave

little yamaha gremlins
utadventure replied to chris fulgenzi's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
One forum suggests that Yamaha uses the same error codes across the line. Try this link: http://www.r6messagenet.com/forums/pdf/2007_R6_Service.pdf Dave -
Jan has the same problem with pressure on her forehead. Many helmets are made with molds from asia, which tend to have more rounded heads. Jan found Vega and HJC helmets uncomfortable but was finally happy with the Scorpion EXO-900. Fullmers are suppose to be more egg shaped as well. I'm interested in seeing the FX-50. Dave
