  1. Jeff, sorry for not giving you a call. I got home at 5 and wasn't sure when you got home from work, so I waited and when I finally remembered it was after 10pm. Randy got back to me and said he has some of the sizes I need. BTW, once you get that grinder up and running, I have a handful you can test and make smaller. -Andrew
  2. I've seen that there are several valve shim kits floating around, like RandyR sent his kit to Bill, all I was wondering if someone had two 270s and one 285 shims, I have a bunch of 275s and 280s to swap, or are the numbers I need the ones that every else needs/used and are thus hard to get? I haven't tried a dealer yet to see if they do swaps. I don't need the shim tool either. I'm located in Milwaukee, I'm hoping to find some soon as I want to have my engine buttoned up & back in the frame over Memorial Day weekend. -Andrew
  3. I would add that they sell higher end vehicles, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Infiniti, Mini, Porsche, etc, so I would guess that they would sell cars that meet higher standards than the corner lot full of auto auctions reject vehicles. I wandered thru there years ago back when the Minis first came out, they were too busy to give me the time of day. Haven't really been back there, only cause I'm a Chevy guy. -Andrew
  4. Sorry to hijack a little, but dingy, do you have more pics of the Steve Crosslet bike or where to find more info on it? Looks like some mods were done to it. +1 on the Corvette Summer paint job. Flames always look good on a vehicle. -Andrew
  5. Looking good, can't wait til my engine is back in my frame too. I spent Sun afternoon working on mine. I know I'm dying to ride mine, yours is almost together and it's probably killing you to not be able to ride it yet. Keep up the good work. Pics are great too. -Andrew So THAT'S how you get help...
  6. So what type of material did you use? Use the old seat cover as a pattern? I had used some vinyl from a fabric store on my Maxim a few years back, didn't hold up for too long (I must have gotten the really cheap stuff). Looks good, hope yours lasts a long time. -Andrew
  7. Any vehicle I own, I usually make it so they could go cross country if necessary. Not saying that there might not be any issues that pop up along the way, but I'm game. Only three things stopping me from leaving tomorrow - money, work, family. Mostly money. -Andrew
  8. Got them! Thanks! Now I just gotta get my motor back together and back in. -Andrew
  9. Two guys walk into a bar. The third guy ducked. -Andrew
  10. Bob, there's a check crawling your way in snail-mail, sent out today. Thanks. -Andrew
  11. I'd like a set of delrin ones, as soon as possible, as I have my engine out, and will be re-installing it within a few weeks (I hope). Let me know where to send the $$. -Andrew
  12. Ok, the question is, will the heads from an '83 1200cc motor fit on top of an '88 1300cc motor? IIRC, Dingy put 1200cc V-Max heads on a 1300 motor. This is the issue I am having. I have a incomplete donor motor from an '88 Venture that I picked up for my '83 Venture that was having 2nd gear issues. When I cracked open my '83 case, I found out that the two center crankshaft bearings were damaged, with the journal of one having scrapes deep enough to catch a fingernail. The other exposed bearings looked dull. Also, the PO had opened the motor before, sealing it back up with red gasket sealer, getting it everywhere, even in oil passages. So I am a little concerned about the block. The '88 motor had almost all of it's covers removed, and the intake/exhaust ports left open. Some of the valves are stuck open. I pulled the heads and the cylinders look fine, still has the cross-hatch marks on the walls with no up/down scratches. The exposed bearings look nice & shiny, and I see no damage on the crankshaft. My '83 heads are still fine as the bike was still running before I tore it down. So what I want to do is put the good gears back into the '88, button it back up, and swap the heads from my '83 onto the '88, then install the '88 back into my bike. I'm looking at head gaskets for an '88 and the valve cove gaskets from a 2nd gen. I know I'm asking a question that I kinda have an answer for (and most likely the direction I will take), but I'm just seeing if there is any issues or problems that I should be aware of or look out for. I was hoping for a simple transmission swap but it's turning into a big headache. -Andrew
  13. I've been looking into finding a set of floorboards for my '83, and have looked into aftermarket sets too. Haven't pulled the trigger on any yet as I am in the process of doing my 2nd gear swap, and have hit a few snags and it's sucking up my fun money. Anyone want to swap their floorboards for pegs, I'll give my pegs up. -Andrew
  14. Condor, it still has pins (that are shorter than what's in there now) but they are held in place behind a solid machined piece instead of bent sheet metal tabs. Once installed, they won't fall out. As for that missing pin, change the oil. When mine went, I found my missing pin stuck to the magnet on the drain plug. Where the pin is located, it can't really get into the gears unless you turn the bike upside down. The only opening accessable that the shifter pins can fall into drains right into the oil pan. The oil pump strainer will keep the pin out of the rest of the engine. I wouldn't worry too much about it. -Andrew
  15. rstacy, I'm changing the look of my bike, and I have those chrome covers on mine. If I get rid of them I'll see if you still want them. -Andrew
  16. Some notes about the dis-assembly: -Collector is broken. Has a nice rattle, and the left side flanges (cyl #2) are broken off. Plus, the rear clamps weren't even tightened to the downpipes-one was even missing it's bolt. Also, the mounting flange was completely broken off, no wonder the bike rattles so much and was so loud. Wonder if there's a Marks collector in my future. -The motor has been apart before. It got re-assembled using red gasket maker instead of Yamabond. I think he used the whole tube as there was so much squeezed out. There was red stuff everywhere, including the oil pickup strainer. It was also in a lot of the machined oil passages too. Wonder if that's what caused the bearings issues. -I lucked out, I have a metal water pump impeller! Gotta look at something positive. -I made a small wooden cart for the motor, next time I need to make it longer on one side. As I was turning the motor upside down, it started leaking more oil. I took my attention off the precariously balanced motor and it jumped off the cart, taking a bite out of my finger as I grabbed for it. Great, now she's tasted human blood, she'll want more... -Andrew
  17. Well, I'm up in the middle of the night, my arms are aching! I started Sat by doing some chores off my Honey-Do list so I could get the rest of the weekend to work on my bike. So by the afternoon I started removing the motor. Got it out with minimal issues. http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc499/icebrrg3rd/Stripped%20Venture/EngineOut02.jpg Tore the motor apart. Thanks for the impact driver tip, broke those screws loose with one tap. Once I split the case, I checked it over. Hmmm, the center crankshaft bearings stayed on the crank instead of in their half like the donor motor did. pulled one off, noticed there was galling. Great. The journal didn't appear to be damaged, tho. Pulled the other bearing, flakes of metal embedded in it. Even better. http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc499/icebrrg3rd/Stripped%20Venture/Bearings.jpg So now the decision has to be made. Check out the journal for damage & order new bearings, or use the donor motor but swap in my heads as the donor's heads have corrosion by the valves. Donor is a '88 1300 and mine is a '83 1200. So much for a simple swap-over. -Andrew
  18. If you're looking to ditch the floorboards and heel/toe, I would swap you a set of pegs and toe shifter. If need be I'd throw in some greenbacks too. -Andrew
  19. Well, last weekend I got some free time to work on the bike. Actually, all I did was dis-assembled the parts engine. It came apart fairly easy, the only issue I had was the retainer screws. How in the h-e-double-hockey-sticks do you get them out? I know from reading the manual that they're loc-tited in, and I applied a little heat, but got nowhere fast. Here are the screws: http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc499/icebrrg3rd/Stripped%20Venture/Retainer.jpg Well, since it was the donor motor, and I had already stripped 2 of the 3 screws, I just drilled one out. But I need to do it the right way on my engine, so any tips or tricks on how to get them out w/o much carnage would be appreciated. Here's more pics of the tear-down: http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc499/icebrrg3rd/Stripped%20Venture/Engine01.jpg http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc499/icebrrg3rd/Stripped%20Venture/UpperEngine01.jpg http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc499/icebrrg3rd/Stripped%20Venture/LowerEngine01.jpg Played with the shifter just to see how the gears interacted. Now I just got to remove my engine and do the swap. -Andrew
  20. Maybe next year I'll get out there earlier. Nice meeting all of you, hope to see you around more. Yeah, I had to run, only had a small reprive from my family duties. Here's the shot of the Ventures, I think the lineup goes (left to right) Scooter Bob, Shrek, a1bummer, Keemez, icebrrg3rd http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc499/icebrrg3rd/Misc%20Bikes/Ventures.jpg Ok, mine isn't a Venture, that's at home naked & waiting for it's 2nd gear fix. But I figured my green Maxim was a better candidate for a St Patty's day parade anyways. -Andrew If you want a higher res pic, I can send it to you.
  21. Call the guy to see what size bike they were on, there is a number on them (if stock) that you can cross reference back to a bike. If they're from a 650 they probably wouldn't flow enough for a Venture. If they are from a 1100, get them & chop them off & mount them to the rest of your system. And yes, the Maxims & Secas stock exhaust ends well short of the end of the bike, and they're a short bike too, but you wouldn't be using the whole exhaust anyways, just the mufflers, right? Make your own mounting points if necessary. -Andrew
  22. That's what I will probably do, meet up at the parade itself. Anyplace special to meet the rest of the group? -Andrew
  23. Nothing like waiting til the last minute to do this. Just sent a donation off to Dano. Can't win if you don't get in. Hope you're doing better Dano. -Andrew
  24. Just a few questions... Do you have to be an ABATE member? Does it matter what kind of bike and what condition the bike is in? Are you promising sunny weather? -Andrew
  25. A few years back I finally heeded the advice someone gave me about old bikes - Get TWO! So I'm riding the Maxim while I have the Venture apart. I'm loving this beautiful weather, enjoying it while I can. -Andrew
