  1. I'm dealing with the same gremlin that you are. My '83 has cut off while riding, like the kill switch was thrown. Sometime it would restart right away, other times 30 minutes later. It's not a comfortable feeling, and I've been riding my Maxim cause I don't want to be stranded on the Venture, or at least late to work. I still have the glass fuses, and I really think that they might be the issue. I've cleaned my kill switch and none of my other "kill" switches light up the LCD (kick stand, etc) when it dies. (Yes, they do kill it if the lights are on the LCD.) I'm going to replace the fuse block and hopefully I won't have any more kill issues. -Andrew
  2. I will try my best, I'm pulling this from recent memory but I could be off. I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong. First remove the covers shown from the flywheel/stator cover. The large one exposes the nut you need to rotate the engine, the small one the timing marks pass the pointer. Rotate the engine COUNTER-CLOCKWISE until you get the T1 mark at the pointer. Look at the rear bank of cylinders and see if the SMALLER dots line up with the marks on the cam holder. Rotate 360° if the dots aren't lined up. Once those dots are lined up with the mark and you are at T1, those are correct. Next rotate the engine COUNTER-CLOCKWISE 360° + 70° to get to T2. The front bank of cylinders should have the LARGER dot lined up with the cam mark. If any are not lined up, then you have cam timing issues. Hope this helps. -Andrew
  3. A couple of months ago I saw one of these mowing a hillside by the airport here in Milwaukee. Kind of like a motorcycle with a mowing deck. http://www.deweze.com/images/u11987.png http://www.deweze.com/images/dsc02225.jpg http://www.deweze.com/images/72%20lit%202012.jpg Looks like fun! -Andrew
  4. Ok, this isn't a knock against women, but how many people's S/O knows all the facts & details of the cars they drive? I'm pretty sure mine knows she drives a Caravan. Maybe even knows Dodge makes them. She can find it in the parking lot (usually). Maybe knows it's a V-6 (course that year Caravan only had V-6s, choice of 3 different ones tho). Maybe might know the year. She knows it's BLUE, and where the gas goes in. Main thing is, she knows that her husband (me) takes care of it. A warning light turns on in the gauges? Tells me, I fix it. Oil changes? I do it. Air in tires? I'm checking them all the time. Tire tread? Yup, me again. All maint, me. She doesn't have to know a thing, just tells me something's wrong, I fix it. That said, she far out-knows me in a lot of things, I'm lucky just have the vehicle knowledge. Or are you just going on about it cause it was a GUY who didn't know his vehicle? -Andrew
  5. +1 on appearances. Can't always tell by looks, but I'm sure there are a ton of people that abuse the permit by parking when the person it's issued to isn't with them. As for parking in a handicap spot w/o the tag, I once parked my bike in the painted lines between the handicap spots and someone called the cops & I wound up with a ticket. Went to court, got off with a $10 court fee, and now I will never park there again. If there are painted lines but not by the handicap spots, I will sometime park there. But for now, I'm healthy and I will walk the distance to park correctly. -Andrew
  6. jasonm, the parts motor had been stripped of almost all parts (that could be sold) when I got it, like covers, clutch basket, starter, so I had to re-use my 1200 clutch on it. The only thing left on was the big metal thingy for the stator and the starter clutch, which I am keeping. So I really don't have many parts left over other than the engine case, heads, and rotating internals. dingy, I'll hopefully get it packed up and weighed this weekend and see what the cost will be, do you want it sent cheap parcel post, no insurance? pmelah, I too wish for a nice workshop like that. My current workshop is my FIL's garage, which is why now that my bike is running again, I need to have all the "spare parts" out so he can work on his projects. My basement can only hold so much cycle parts, so I got to get rid of the extras. -Andrew
  7. dingy - Ok, only the crank & tranny. I think I still have the shims for the output shaft, will toss them in too. -Andrew
  8. djh3, I'll see if the valves free up, but the heads/valves are pretty corroded. They were exposed to water and left for a while unprotected. Maybe they are worth something, but I don't think I'll use them. Drive line, that's what was wrong with mine (2nd gear issue). Clutch slave, all corroded up. So I think I pretty much have what I'll need off it then. Thanks for the input. dingy, just the crank? Don't want the counterbalance shaft? No pistons/rods? (they're 1200cc) And the transmission, what about the output shaft/u-joint? I'll see what size box I can stuff them in & get back to you. Remember, it was just starting that 2nd gear issue, so it's not a perfect tranny. pmelah, there weren't any carbs or intake boots (if that's what you mean by ports) on the parts engine. Sorry. If no one wants anything else, I'll probably recycle the rest this weekend. No use for the engine halves other than future beer cans? -Andrew
  9. So I swapped a (mostly) 1300cc engine into my bike and now I am left with a 1200 engine that I have no room for. I want to get rid of it, but keep any parts that I might need as spares. The donor motor had no covers, so mine went back on. Same with clutch basket. The motor has been pulled apart and will be heading to scrap soon. This is what I am saving so far: -Starter clutch (good condition, no cracks) -Valve covers -Misc bolts/nuts/washers -Valve shims If anyone has a suggestion as to what else I should keep from it, otherwise I will be tossing/recycling the rest of it: -Engine cases (upper & lower, 1200cc) appear to be in good condition -Heads (from 1300) - they are in rough condition, rusty & stuck valves (don't appear to be bent tho) -Rotating assembly (pistons, crank, counterbalance, transmission, output shaft) ---Main bearing journals have some scratches in them ---2nd gear issue on transmission parts -Camshafts & chains I am basically in the mindset of "I've been in there once, I'm not going back in", so I don't forsee the need of keeping the engine or any internal parts. Plus I'm not really an ebay seller type of guy so not saving parts to sell. -Andrew p.s. If anyone wants the remains for free...
  10. I like that idea, replacing the coils with COP ones. Dang it, I'm spending MUCH more on cycle things than when I wasn't a member here. And I'm getting more ideas every day! Curse you, VRO! -Andrew
  11. Dang it all, that's a nice bike for that price, wish I had a few extra $$ and I'd go for it, even tho it's a little bit of a drive away. Has a bunch of what I'm looking for all in one place on one bike. -Andrew
  12. Isn't that the best way? Sounds like everyone else got back home without much drama. So I saw a few pics, are there more? -Andrew
  13. Wow, Rick, wow. Hope you guys heal fast and that you get the trailer fixed. I got several pics of your bike/trailer from the weekend and I think it's a real nice combo. Make sure you go over the bike, just in case there was some hidden damage done to it. Other than the guy who pulled out in front of me, I had a muddy jeep get in front of me that was dropping dirt chunks, so I quickly changed lanes before I got hit with one. Hope those we haven't heard from got home safely. Thanks again, Orlin & Sharon! -Andrew
  14. I really enjoyed my first MD, I had met some people before and met many new ones. I consider them all my friends and hope that I get many more opportunities to see and ride with them. I had a blast and I thank Orlin and Sharon (and Oscar) for hosting this MD. Oh, I told my wife I couldn't come back...........without her. The first is Rick and Mike Carbtuning my bike. BTW, Mike stole that shirt from Rick. Then there's Bill installing his carb diaphragms, with his "helpers" watching him work. A couple of group shots of the folks "working" hard at the MD. After a ride we met up at an adult beverage place. 4 first gens, 2 second gens, one V-Star, and a Victory. Camp site. Jeff had a 5-star hotel concealed as a tent. Our signal fire, we were sending signals to the space station. And keeping the children of the corn at bay. Well, here's the pics you've been waiting for.
  15. Yup, got home about 1pm, gave everyone hugs and kisses, took a shower, and climbed into bed since my wife was taking a nap while Tiva was napping too. Woke up at 7:30 for supper. She is soooo nice to me. -Andrew
  16. Glad you came thru it with minimal damage. I had to use my new air horns on someone who pulled out from a side road onto Hwy 14 in front of me. Luckily I had plenty of time to brake. -Andrew
  17. Got a few more hours at work, ride home, load up, then hit the road by 6. Woo hoo! -Andrew
  18. Well, let's just say that Yamaha doesn't publish 1/4 mile times for the 2nd gens. Must have a good reason, hint, hint. Aren't they also limited to 115 mph or so while the 1st gens aren't? Gotta wonder. The '83 reviews give them a 12.69 sec @ 103 mph 1/4 mile time, top speed about 136 mph. That's the 1200cc at 90 hp. That video had the guy on the 2nd gen doing 14.32/14.38 sec @ 90.8 mph 1/4 mile, no idea how beat or loaded up the bike is. Stock hp is 97 for the 1300cc IIRC. -Andrew
  19. Since this will be my first MD, what should I bring along? I know some have specific tools (carbtune, etc) that they're bringing, I'm bringing along my traveling tools, is there anything else I should have? And Orlin, should I bring along some food or a dish to pass? I don't want to be a mooch. Just let me know. -Andrew
  20. Oh, I forgot to ask, is it like Don's with BYOTP? (Bring your own TP?) On a serious note, for those of us camping what kind of facilities are available? Just want to plan in advance, that's all. See you in a day! -Andrew
  21. IT seems to me i tried that once and with out that gasket it pinches the starter drive gears and wont turn over, must have gasket!. someone will chime in soon to confirm or not. No gasket = solid, non-moving gears. But the OP said he will use permatex + gasket so he shouldn't have any binding issues. He's going for the belt & suspenders fix. Must really want to conserve that oil. -Andrew
  22. Ok, will be leaving shortly after work Friday, and actually will stay Fri night & Sat night so I can enjoy the bonfire & cookout Sat plus not have to deal with night creatures on the road. So see you all then! -Andrew
  23. You're not riding a Hardley, you're on a 1st gen. There shouldn't be a trail of parts behind you, just sobbing 2nd genners that you left in the dust. Oh, wait, that's right. You like to fall. Ok, I'll keep an eye on all the rock piles by the side of the road. And yup, that looks to be the approximate way I'm going. See you there Friday night. -Andrew
  24. Well, looks like I should be heading out there Fri after work. As long as there is decent weather and my bike holds up, I'll be there. Just save me a tent! I haven't planned a route yet, so Jeff, just leave a trail of bread crumbs when you leave Fri morning... -Andrew
  25. If you have a spare tent that's one less obstacle I need to hurdle. It's just how the wife is feeling, and she appears to be feeling better than when she had our first two, plus the little one is sleeping 4 hours at a time thru the night. So as long as the Venture holds up I might have a chance. Anyone with tire changing skills? I have a set of tire irons, want to know if I should bring them & the new front tire. -Andrew
