  1. I've done it the same way as Condor. No need to have to re-adjust it. One of the cables is spring loaded at the carbs to help with getting them off/on. -Andrew
  2. So how is this group buy turning out so far Dingy? Who's in? My bike is still running, but don't know if it's running at tip-top condition, and who knows when (not if) it will go. I'm in. -Andrew
  3. I say let him try to start it, but no working/maintenance allowed. Give him a time limit, like a 1/2 hour, then he has to tow it away. You don't need a stranger in your drive ripping apart a car, and who knows how long it might take. And definitely cash in hand, as-is, up front. -Andrew
  4. I think this would be great, as my original one is at the 29 year mark, and I'm not altogether sure it's still functioning right. Since I'm in the middle of stripping my bike, I think it would be a great buy. I missed out on the first round. And my warden isn't that hard on me, but I suppose that's because I have only ONE Venture, at least for now... -Andrew
  5. Merry Christmas to all... Here's my tree, hadn't put the star on yet but had a surprise cameo by one of the cats. -Andrew
  6. Cleaning some skeletons out of your closets? :rotf:Will pencil this on my calendar as possible, will see what is all going on. -Andrew
  7. I just did this fix and the genius on the phone where I ordered it, had the "new" upgraded part listed for the '83 but still listed the original pins, so he said that they were the same. WRONG. Once I got the part, one of the short pins was about the right length for the long pin, and the remaining pins I took a dremel to and chopped them to size. Cut real easy. Haven't had much time to ride since it needs a new rear tire and the carbs had gotten plugged from sitting, but it shifted thru all the gears just fine. -Andrew
  8. Well, I got a few minutes between the kids' trick & treating and pulled the carbs again. Popped them apart and checked the pilot jets again. I guess when I did it the first time, I did open them up from being plugged, but I didn't clean them out completely. So this time I got them all cleaned out. Buttoned it back up, cranked her over, and she's ALIVE! Only got to take it for a short drive, but felt good to be back on the Venture. Too bad riding season is almost over. -Andrew
  9. Randy, when I got the bike last year, one of the first things I did was re-solder the CMS, as a lot of the functions weren't working. After going down last Fall, maybe something is loose again. Will recheck it this winter. As for the carbs, I took them out and separated them into the left and right sides, so I could open the backs up. I removed the jet block and pulled out the pilot jets. I shone a flashlight behind each to see if they were plugged, then blasted them with carb cleaner. When I re-assembled them, I made sure that I could see thru them. Maybe they were still plugged. The caps, well, I need to replace them, the plugs were changed last year, but I really haven't ridden it this year since the shifter cam broke. It was just that it was driving fine before I parked it, now it is running poorly. I can see the carbs getting plugged, but the electronic parts I can't see failing so suddenly over a few months of non-use. But they will get replaced over the winter. Main problem is I don't have any free time to work on it. Maybe next weekend I can get a few free minutes. Thanks for the responses. -Andrew
  10. Well, my poor Venture decided that I had ignored her long enough and won't run properly. Back in spring, my shifter cam had decided that it was time to fail. Since I was short on cash, I parked it and started riding my Maxim. Since I only have space allowed for one bike in the garage, the Venture got the short straw and was left outside under a bike cover. I put Seafoam in the gas and let it run a little. During the summer, I started a few times just to get it running. Finally, a month ago I got the new parts and installed the revised shifter cam in. Problem is, now it only runs with the choke on, and backfires alot. If I try to twist the throttle, it will immediately die. If I play with it as it's dying, I can get it to rev up, and actually get it to move, but as soon as I let off, it dies. I've taken the TCI out, stuck it under a heat lamp for 4 hours (mmmm, toasty) and cleaned the connectors, but still acts the same. I did get my low beam back tho (had been off for a while, bulb is good). It is dim, not full strength, but has done that on occasion since I got it. Don't know if that was related or just coincidence. I've taken the carbs off and cleaned the insides. A couple of the pilot holes appeared to be plugged, now they are all clear. Before I did this, the left front exhaust wouldn't get warm but now all pipes get warm within 1/2 min of idling (with the choke on). The diaphrams have a couple of pinholes, but they had them before and it still ran better than this. I will be replacing them soon. When I turn it on, it sounds like there is a bunch of clicking right by the fuel pump, can't remember if this was normal. Haven't checked on fuel pressure, or the filter, I haven't had much bike time. The bike was running ok before it got parked, not perfectly but still very drivable. I'm open to suggestions, I hope to have it running so I can drive it to it's winter storage area (125 miles away @ my folks place) before the snow flies. Thanks, Andrew
  11. I know that there might not be another group buy, but if I do purchase one separately, could I get the proper map info from you? I had wanted to get one in the group buy, but since my money tree died a long time ago, I didn't have the spare $$ for it at the time (I do now tho). Currently trying to get mine running properly just in time to winterize it... -Andrew
  12. Well, I went to my first "Slimey Crud Run". It's a motorcycle rally that takes place just west of Madison, goes from Pine Bluff to Leland, WI. Lots of different bikes, from old to new, show ready to barely running, Brit, American, Asian, and the people to match them. I saw some 2nd gen Ventures, but only saw a couple of 1st gen ones. Unfortunately, mine wasn't there. I fixed the shifter cam issue, but since it had been "abandoned" for several months, I couldn't get it running in time to go, so I took my other bike, a 650 Maxim that I've had for 18 years. Yes, it is green. -Andrew
  13. I suppose that'll work as long as you don't KEEP aiming for the deer cause I'm sure you'll hit 'em then! Glad you got out of there with only your undies in a bunch. I had a few cross the road yesterday but they were 1/4 mile ahead and I easily slowed down for them. -Andrew
  14. Thanks for the pics. Now I just gotta check to see, but I'm pretty certain I don't have the baffles, and the YICS is actually loose and sitting on top of the engine. Will have to chuck that. -Andrew
  15. So what does ice cream on a hot day smell like? Kinda sour & spoiled? What does the deflector look like? Anyone have a pic of it, maybe uninstalled? I don't think I have one on my '83 (PO really messed/chopped up my bike), but I do have the YICS stuff still attached (gonna remove it tho). I want to remove/modify the side panels like dingy & venturous have done, but I don't want extra hot air blowing on me. Thanks, -Andrew
  16. Ok, I don't know who to credit this to, as I made a copy but didn't make a note of who did it. This is done at your own risk. There are 3 wires, black, green w/ white stripe, and blue w/ yellow stripe. If you splice the black and blue/yellow together, WITHOUT CUTTING ANY OF THEM, you still have the warning light on the dash if it is down, but it will not cut off the engine. All wires still need to go to the switch. It is still recommended to clean up the switch so it functions properly. -Andrew
  17. I found two ways to fix it, one way would disable it completely and one way would still throw up the warning light but not kill the engine. I did it the first way, but will go to the second when I rebuild my engine so it doesn't drip as much oil on the switch (which caused it to get gunked up and not work). I think I found both solutions on here, not sure which threads they were in. Basically, IIRC, there are three wires going to the switch, and by grounding out two together, you by-pass it, I don't recall which ones. You DON'T CUT any wire that I remember, tho. If I get a chance, I'll either search the site or go out and look at the bike and see what I did. -Andrew
  18. Well, as I was checking out the shifter cam, I noticed the tab over one of the pins was bent badly, and when I tried to bend it back, it fell off. I also couldn't rotate it enough to check all the pins, and I didn't have time to remove the clutch basket to see the other pins. So I guess I will not be able to make it since I won't have a new part in time. I will keep it in mind for next time. -Andrew
  19. Are you suggesting that I can't brea... fix things all by myself?!? I have the proper tool for the job: http://www.faqs.org/photo-dict/photofiles/list/3209/4266lump_hammer.jpg I'll post tomorrow if I get her running and will change my status from maybe to yes. -Andrew
  20. I'm just southeast of the stadium. Off of Lincoln & 35th. I'm going to be looking at the bike after work today to see if it's repairable. I can't head out Fri, but I can leave anytime Sat. -Andrew
  21. I have been thinking about this, but my bike all of a sudden decided it doesn't want to shift anymore. From searching, it might be the shift pins have slipped out. So if I get it fixed, I might be able to run out there on Sat. Granted, my bike needs lots of maintenance, but the wallet is too thin right now, so it'll probably be just more meet than maint. -Andrew p.s. flyinfool, when were you planning on going?
  22. March 12th is a no-go for me. My son's pinewood derby/daughter's powder puff derby (they're running it together) is from noon til 4. So next time. -Andrew
  23. Not much free time for hobbies. Use to do photography before digital & tinker with RC cars, now it's camping w/ the kids and just keep the vehicles running and the house standing. -Andrew
  24. Sounds good. Set a date and I'll check my, er, the wife's schedule to see if I can make it. Just have to wake up the bike, it has been sleeping the winter away in the garage. Gotta get a mirror for it after scraping the last one off. Need a new helmet too. -Andrew
  25. Maybe you can take one of those "checks" that the scammers over-pay on an item (which you are supposed to send the extra $$$ back along with your item for sale) and send it to the Maj./Sgt. scammers for those oversea vehicles. Kinda like sending junk mail back in another vendor's pre-paid junk mail envelope. Course, they'll never stop since there will always be someone who'll fall for it. -Andrew
