  1. Well, I finally got all the plastic back on my ’83 VR and took it for a little ride. I only rode about 5 miles because I still need new tires. I am really pleased with the way it is running. Now I’m really getting excited about getting it on the road. I’ve haven’t had the carbs synced yet but I really don’t see how it can run much smoother. Of course I’ve been riding my 1100 so maybe it just seems smooth because I’m going from a V-twin to the Venture. So now comes my question. When I returned from the short ride, my rear brake rotor was very, very hot. I knew my brake was dragging, but I guess it was worse than I thought. I’ve done some more work on the proportional valve and it seems a little better but I was wondering how much drag is acceptable. When I try to spin the rear wheel, it will only turn about ¼ turn after I release it. I would appreciate any ideas on how to free it up. I’ve had the calipers apart and cleaned them. The brakes do seem a little spongy.
  2. I’m getting very close to laying down some new paint on my MKI project. I’ve been searching for ideas for weeks but I’m still not finding what I’m looking for. I’d like to see some first gen’s with something completely different like graphics, or two tones (other than factory scheme) or some strange paint technic was used like marbling or spraying thru lace, or something just wild and different. I’m just not a stock kind of guy and single colors bore me, (although that’s likely where I’ll end up with mine). I’m not real creative on my own, but I can copy other people’s ideas . I have seen Venturous’ purple flame bike, but anybody got something else to show?
  3. On Monday, its off to work. I'm at the office early. A quick cup and coffee and begin to focus on the work week. I'm getting the week's tasks prioritized and make a quick run through the emails. Here's a message from one of my riding buddies bragging about a new 'hole in the wall' eating place. I will have to put that one on my 'short list'. On Tuesday, I’m knee deep in a busy week. Service calls are made, meetings are attended. Service reports, equipment evaluations – the business gears are in full grind. Still, if only for a short break, I think about riding. I wonder if Steve and Bob are enjoying their commuting ride each morning. By Wednesday, I’m in full swing. Things at work are flowing quickly - equipment breaks, equipment repaired. Plans are executed. Challenges come and are met – these are handled by experience and expertise. At lunch, I surf the net some for my passion. But by now, I’m checking the weekend weather. Looks nice – should be good for a ride. If I don't hear from one of my buddies, I send a quick email. “How about a ride Saturday?” I'll wait for a response. Thursday comes, and I start getting excited about the upcoming weekend. 2 more days until the fun begins. Perhaps I will hear from a riding buddy. Maybe I’ll be riding alone. Either way, I’m going. During a break, I’m scanning around Google Maps, looking for new roads – thinking about what might interest me. I don't want a lot of traffic. If I want to leave early, heading west or north to keep the morning sun out of my eyes. Hmmm – I bet the spring wild flowers will be in bloom. Or maybe the river water level will be up at that state park up north. So many choices, so little time. IT’S FRIDAY!! By this afternoon, I’m going to take care of the last service calls for the week. The company can have me today. But tomorrow is mine. Just me and the road. I close my eyes for a second. I can smell the country. I can breath clearly – hear the sounds. I can hear the roar of my bike. I can see the curves in the road. I can feel the forces on my body as I ride. I can't wait until tomorrow! Saturday is ride day. I will get up early, have a cup of coffee and leave as soon as the sun rises. Maybe I’ll ride over and meet a buddy somewhere before we head out for an adventure. Maybe I’ll be venturing out on my own. Maybe I know where I’m going. Maybe I have no idea. Perhaps I’ll turn a corner and stumble upon that perfect country road. The one that steps you back in time 60 years as you pass the old farms with wind mills and run down barns. Maybe I’ll find that twisty road on the map that looked so interesting. Maybe I’ll find a 100 foot white pine, with its massive branches that reflects life lesson about bending without breaking. Maybe I’ll visit the coast line – watch the birds foraging for lunch. Maybe I’ll stop somewhere and meet someone new. We will chat for a while about riding. Maybe I’ll find that farmers field, where the sun and shadows provide that perfect photo. Maybe I’ll ride that same old road – the one which I have memorized every curve. I can ride that road as a master, safely pushing my machine back and forth and loving her power and smoothness. Maybe I’ll go 600 miles, or maybe just 60. Maybe I’ll do all of these, or none of these. But this much I know – wherever I go, I will find adventure, and I will have a blast. And when I return, the world will seem right again. I’ll have a feeling of peace. I’ll be ready for whatever comes next. What comes next is Sunday. On Sunday, I wake up early to read the paper and drink some coffee. Later that morning, I’ll cook Sunday lunch for my wife. We share several meals together during the week. While I cook, I’ll day dream about yesterday. What a day that was. Yesterday was a play day. I got to ride my bike. We had an adventure together. We left the house excited and returned home relieved of any stress. Yesterday was a blast. I love Saturdays...
  4. I’m still trying to get my ’83 VR running. I feel like I’m making some progress but I’m still far from having it going. It seems like it is starving for gas. I have cleaned the carbs as well as I can. It will start and run for a few seconds and then dies. It will start again and die again. It sounds just like it is running out of gas. I have new gas lines and new filter going to the inlet side of the fuel pump. I still have the original line going from the outlet side to the carbs. I suspected that I may have an obstruction in the line so I removed it and blew air through it. It seemed to be clear. I put it back on the fuel pump and turned the key on to see how much fuel was being pumped. Since there was no pressure on the line I expected the pump to run continuously but it only pumped for a second and cut off. Each time I would turn the key on, it would just pump for about a second. Is this normal?
  5. Ok it’s official! I’m an idiot. So here’s how I discovered this. I’ve got my RSV up on the lift for a maintenance. So today I tackled changing the brake fluid and clutch fluid. I did the rear brake and then the front. Everything went smooth as silk. Then came the clutch fluid ,now keep this in mind I’m doing this the old fashion way, (open the bleeder, squeeze the lever, close the bleeder, release the lever and repeat). So I get the fluid in the clutch changed , it feels good. So I decide to started her up and put her in gear to see how she shifts. While it’s running an I put it in gear it dies. Damn, I’m thinking there must be air in the line so I bleed her again, and again. Start her up, shift in to gear it dies. Well, at this point I come inside and log on to the forum and review the tech section again and do a few searches on bleeding the clutch. Every thing seems right. So back out I go and bleed her again, start her up, it dies. Then all at once it hit me like a BRICK! And I though to myself.. YOU IDIOT THE KICK STAND IS DOWN!!!!. I put it up and alls well. I hope I can get a little smarter when I pull the drive shaft.

  7. Well, I’m kind of embarrassed to admit that at age 52, I am finally considering my first road trip on a motorcycle. I’ve been riding various bikes since I was 17, but have never had the opportunity to really get out and go. About 150 miles on a Saturday with friends is the longest I’ve ever ridden. I’ve had my RSV now for two years and have put about 8K on the clock, but all here in the Houston area and nearby countryside. Well, every year for Thanksgiving we travel to my wife’s hometown of Odessa to visit her family. Today she told me that she wanted to go out a few days ahead of me to have some “alone” time with her parents. So I say “cool, I’ll ride out later on the bike then!” My wife is not real excited about my “new” love (the Venture) and wasn’t too thrilled, but I think she’ll come around. So now, if I’m going to do this, I’ve got to do it right. Don’t want to forget anything important or breakdown along the way due to failure to prepare properly. So, any suggestions from any of you “old hands” on how to properly prepare the bike, and myself, for this adventure? The distance is about 560 miles each way. It usually takes about nine and a half hours in the car and is mostly on I-10. That seems kind of boring, so any ideas for alternate routes will be considered. Should I try to do it in one day or is that likely to kill me on my first trip? I could stop one night at friends in the Canyon Lake area, just north of San Antonio. That would split it into 220 and 340 mile segments. As I’m thinking, that is probably the way to go. So, when I leave San Antonio, should I just rip it out the freeway or take a more scenic route. A big chunk of that road has an 80mph speed limit, so any deviation is definitely going to take longer. On the plus side, there are a lot more choices for places to stop and things to see off the freeway. What about safety? I guess there too there are pluses and minuses for each option. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas and suggestions.
  8. I have seen the posts concerning the wind deflectors to keep the “breeze off the knees”. For whatever reason when my feet are on the floorboards this does not bother me. However, when I throw my feet op on my highway pegs I’ve created this wind tunnel which routes the wind straight up my legs and onto my upper body / face. At highway speeds it is pretty irritating for long stretches and I like to have my legs extended; I’m 6’5”. Will the deflectors reduce this wind as well? It seems as though they would not help this situation - but if you think they will work, though I’m not a big fan of the look, I’ll definitely try adding them. Second question: I am considering the taller – wider windshield because ..well I’m taller and wider. Has anyone had experience with these?
  9. I've been asked several times now to provide the lyrics to the song so here goes: The Wanderer Lyrics (with liberties): Oh well I’m the type of guy who will never settle down Where pretty girls are well, you know that I’m around I kiss ’em and I love’em ’cause to me they’re all the same I hug ’em and I squeeze ’em they don’t even know my name They call me the wanderer yeah the wanderer I roam around around around... Oh well there’s Harley on my left and there’s Wing on my right But Star is the girl that I’ll be with tonight And when they ask me which one I love the best I tear open my shirt I got Venture on my chest ’cause I’m the wanderer yeah the wanderer I roam around around around... Oh well I roam from town to town I go through life without a care ’cause I'm happy as a clown With my two wheels a turnin' and I’m going nowhere I’m the type of guy that likes to roam around I’m never in one place I roam from town to town And when I find myself a-fallin’ for some girl I jump on that bike of mine and ride around the world Yeah I’m the wanderer yeah the wanderer I roam around around around... Oh yeah I’m the type of guy that likes to roam around I’m never in one place I roam from town to town And when I find myself a-fallin’ for some girl I jump on that bike of mine and ride around the world Yeah ’cause I’m a wanderer yeah a wanderer I roam around around around... ’cause I’m a wanderer yeah a wanderer I roam around around around...
  10. I have an opportunity tomorrow to do an all day training session with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m hoping that they will cover some of the thing in the Ride Like A Pro video.
  11. OK I admit I’m a bit lazy. The fork seals were replaced a few months ago including (I’m assuming) new oil, now I’m installing progressive springs. Do I need to drain the fork oil since it’s still almost new or can I just pull out the old springs and put in the new? Thanks, Al PS how do you get the old spring out, with a coat hanger or something?
  12. I just ordered a Garmin Streetpilot 2720 with ram mount, and I’m thinking to hardwire it or use the power outlet from my bike…but I’m also thinking can you connect it to your audio system so you can hear the directions thru your speakers or is the original speaker loud enough to hear the directions when you ride. Can't wait to install everything.
  13. I’m removing the trunk and mount on my 2004 RSV and stumbled on a few threads in the past on options. For now I’m leaning on getting a RSTD backrest and was wondering if someone put together a complete list of parts and or can point me to a dealer that can get me setup at a reasonable price.
  14. Although I’m new to this forum, I’m not new to my Venture. In ’87 I bought my ’86 Royal while it was still in a box and paid for complete dealer assembly and warranty. That was almost 20 years ago. Wow, how time flies. Long story short: last Saturday an older lady decided she liked my lane better than her own. End result, insurance company say my bike is totaled. Sad day; very sad day. Other than for several bumps an very slight burses, I’m fine. I’m very sad to see it go – the end of a truly great relationship. OK, here’s my question: Do any of you have experience with: 1. insurance scrap value; 2. parting out the bike and estimates of time and value if most of the bike is good, just lots of twisted metal and busted faring. The insurance co. is working on what they will give me. What they said is that I have two options: 1. they pay me replacement value and they take the bike; or 2. they pay me replacement value minus scrap value and I keep the bike to part out. Looking for experienced points of view. I live in Southern CA. Thanks.
