  1. Due to Age, if you rebuild the Master, I strongly reccomend Replaceing the Slave Also. It will be Corroded Inside. I strongly reccomend Buying a New One.
  2. If your springs are still original, and over 50K, you can assume they are worn out. The Progressives, slowly increase in strength as the forks are compressed. Small bumbs, they are soft, but as the forkes compress, the springs get progressivly Stiffer, as needed to absorb the shock, as the forks compress. Also the spring material, is thicker. And, they cost about the same as New OEM Springs. Also after the rebuild, all the Dirt and crude has been removed, New Clean Oil installed, and the " same " correct Quantity of oil in both sides. I am assumeing here, that the job has Never been done on a particular bike. And then add the " SuperBrace " and you get another notch up in performance. I bought my 89 New, in 93. Frankly on the first ride home from the dealer, I thought the front end on this bike was the Worse handling Front End of any previous bike I had owned, since 1955. However I got used to it. I did not rebuild the front end untill about 50K. Should have done it the week after I bought the bike.
  3. South to Reno, 2 days of rideing around that area, and return to Seattle. About 2000 mile total trip miles. Trip included, long freeway runs, moutain climbing, Up and Down, a fair amout of in city Driveing. I Kept All the Gas Reciepts, and exact total of milage. I averaged, all the fill ups. and miles, it came out to 42.5 mpg on my 89, rideing single, with about 65 lb. of load in the Bags. This was buying Regular, at many different brand gas stations. In, Wash, Oregon, and Calif, and Nv. Last week, I ran 150 miles on local back roads, ( no freeway ) averaged about 50 mph speeds. One tank, came out 44.5 MPG. Seems like the lower speeds did make some difference. I have never tried Higher Octane fuel in my bike, ??? Maby will give it a try. My 99 Busa, has a MPG calculator on it. At Freeway, speeds it reads out about 44 to 45 mpg, most of the time. However on back roads, running slow, 45 to 55 mph, the fuel computer hits 50 MPG. Which is as high as it reads. ( This is when I am just ambling along at the speed limit. ) I know I can make it burn more gas if I decide to .
  4. Have you checked the Charging Voltage at the + Battery Stud with engine running at about 2000 RPM, With a Digital Volt/Ohm meter ?? Should be between 13.5 to 14.0 Volts, DC. Don't believe the Meter on the Instrumtment panel. Have you Charged your battery latley, with all the prblems, I'm sure it needs the water level topped off, and a Good Charging, with a Real Battery Charger ( not a trickle charger )
  5. How many miles on this bike ? IF over 50,000 miles ------------- Have the Fork Steering Bearings Ever been Greesed ? ( if not, they need greese ) Have the Fork Springs Ever been Repaced ? ( if over 50K they are worn out ) How many years has it been since the Fork Tubes have had the Oil Changed ????? ( Do you KNOW, if the Forks both have the correct amount of fluid installed and the same amount on each side ??? ) Have you checked the Torque on the Pinch Bolts that hold the Fork tubes In place ?? ( they might be loose !! if so, your life is in danger ) Have you checked the Front Axel Nut Torque setting ?? Do your Front Wheel Bearings have any Greese left in them ??? On an 84, if the bearings have never been replaced I doubt there is much Greese left in them, and if there is any, its Caked Up !!!
  6. I thought the narrow size was supposed to improve low speed handling. Never heard anything about it causeing problem, at high speed. ?? Give it time, I don't think its bad, just different. Have you tried ridein on some Twisty Back roads ??? I bet it will be better in that world. !!
  7. Sorry, missed that, was to early in the morning --- ( and I have to admit, I did install that washer in the wrong position last year, and yes, the Brake did Drag !! )
  8. Must have picked up a nail on that ride !! Good choice on the new E-3 !!! I just installed one on my 89, about 900 miles, and very happy with it so far.
  9. Thats an aftermarket add on. If you want the Toe shifter, you just need to re-install the Stock Shift Lever, which the bike came with
  10. Correct: Also, do the dry out proceedure, and open the box, and resolder the connections to the Circuit Board. They turn into " Cold Solder Joints " and also crack, creating high resiatance connections. This will start causeing missfireing. Also, these TCI's are expensive, and hard to come bye. If you are planning any long trips, its good to carry a spare. And moveing the item to the top of the Air Box, makes for Easy Maintenance " On the Road " .
  11. Right side of Axel: --- Did you Install that Thick Washer in the Correct Position ?????? Double check that.
  12. Pull up the IPC, any Yamaha dealer, look at the exhaust section: 4 seals for the Exhaust pipes Into the Canister, and 1 each for the Muffler's. They are made of Soft material, I replaced all 6 last winter, about 60K on my bike.
  13. Most auto parts stores, carry an ATM type 6 position generic fuse holder.
  14. Did you replace the Seals ?? 6 each, at the Canister
  15. You can order parts from most any yamaha dealer " On Line "
  16. Also, I have seen several New Yamaha's, for sale, on E-Bay, by dealers. And its stated, that there is "NO Warrenty " ??? Just noticed this in the last couple of weeks.
  17. Try a Dunlop E-3--- Forget the D-404's
  18. Check the resistance " thru " the Kill Switch with an Ohm meter !! follow cable till you come to a Plug, open plug, check resistance thru the Switch. Also check the Resistance thru the " ON - Off " contacts of your Ignition Switch. Check your " Ignition Fuse " 15 amp, the Clips that hold it in place may not be makeing good contact. --- this should get you started, ( pun intended )
  19. I use Valvoline Synthectic fluid
  20. Go somplace that has a large Selection: Try them on, untill you find one that fits you, and feels comfortable. Should be a little on the tight side, cause it will break in. Fit, is more important then price,
  21. Sounds like you need a new set of Progressive Suspension Fork Springs.
  22. I hate Rain !! But its not raining in Seattle today, But we got 2 inches yesterday, in about 30 min.
  23. But what I really want to know, is how did the bike run !!!!! Thats whats really important , right
  24. I'd say, a big one !!
  25. Don't get lost in the Corn Fields !!
