  1. The starter internal ground to an external bolt then wires to the main cleaned ground wire on the right side of the engine. Positive cable thoroughly cleaned too then greased. The starter turns over instantly hot or cold, no drag. This combined with a good carb cleaning and routine usage my Venture always starts in a second (or even sitting for a month).
  2. Went out Sat. on Venture, never got over 45F. outside. My oil temp gauge never got above 130F. Same for my oil cooled Suzuki(s). My conclusion: Thick oil between to the clutch plates not allowing them to mesh properly, come together. Oil is best around 160-175F. New clutch springs would help too. Don't use oil with anti-friction additives ie. (synthetics:mo money:). I use dino oil (cheapest I can buy) get 100+k miles out of all engines with no leaks, no burning, no slipping....
  3. 2 lamps x 55 watts = 110 watts divided by 12 volts = 9.2 amps. But most systems are about 14v so it's really 7.8 amps. Using a 10 amp or larger switch will work. More reliable. Less wiring. Just use a separate fuse if coming off the battery directly.
  4. Most bikes don't have them, and the MK1's braking is greatly improved without them. Disconnect the anti-dives hose, use the single banjo bolt at the caliper.
  5. All 5 (five) of my bikes.... $260 per year. Only liability, but why spend another $200 per bike when my most expensive bike is $3000 and it's the cagers that cause 90% of the accidents? "Thank the Lord" in 45 years and 350,000 miles riding I've NEVER caused an accident.
  6. In fact there is a don't "blink town" named No Trees. Yes there are trees in West Texas but they are either scrub trees or imported for east Texas or "deposited by a migrant bird" if you get my drift! Shade is only under artificial means. The upside is it warm and dry here most of the time, Sorry Yankees. Born in Mich but lived here 25 years so I'm almost considered a native.
  7. Getting it out is hard, but taking it apart is easy. Bad brushes, bad connections, poor grounding, worn bearings, burnt wiring, & dirty. Do the internal grounding project listed somewhere here on VR.org. It can only be: 1. Bad solenoid 2. Bad cables 3. Bad battery 4. Bad starter circuit (low amp side, starter button) 5. Bad starter Clean and check/replace one at a time, in the order above.
  8. It has the be trailered, it's a terrible thing to call a motorcycle. Vibrates so bad my hands hurt going around the block. So low, my knees are dragging. What a piece of cr.....
  9. But light delicate parts will need careful hands. Whole dash assemblies come up often.
  10. Hated work, too many crappy bosses for 30 years. Retired at 55, my goal. Can sleep in, go where I want, when I want, do what I want. Wife and I actually get along better. When S.S. and pensions kick in will have more money than when I worked. I live in a great climate, no bills, many good friends, and healthy. Why would I work? Don't wait, do it now.
  11. Everything fell apart. Rear final drive, ABS did not work ($1500 to fix), transmission seal, electrical problems, throttle cables, hard to work on, expensive parts, no dealers, on and on. More than 40 problems. Lucky I could work on it. Lost $1500 in less than a year. Hated the top heaviness, and large bubble of a fairing. Final straw was wife uncomfortable in back seat. Gone and good riddens. Now the Venture is a complete turn around.
  12. I went to the carb parts diagrams here on VR and they do not show the circle clip and white spacer. But you can't miss them once the carb cap, large spring, and inside the slide is a screw, remove it, then under it is a small spring, washer and the needle. On the needle is the circle clip and white washer. Replace the white spacer with something 1/2 the thickness. Do this leaning procedure and I gaurantee you will be be getting MPG, & be a "greener" individual. My bike just went back up over 5 mph and best of all, it performs better too. Sorry, no pics, this is a very simple job.
  13. This works on all motorcycles with carbs. I've slightly revised this for better clarification. And I posted to this section for 2nd Gen's to read. Easy 1-2 Hour job 1. Remove the carb cap, 4 screws. If 1 screw is a security screw used vise grips to turn. 2. Remove the spring. 3. Remove carb slide and diaphram, it's black with a needle hanging out the back. 4. Remove the jet needle, there's a large screw inside the middle of the carb slide holding it in. Pay attention to the order the parts come out. 5. There is a white spacer under a circle clip. Remove it. 6. Replace the white spacer with any small washers about 1/2 the thickness of the white spacer under the circle clip. 7. Ignore the fact that the white spacer has a small tit on one side. 8. You can add 1-2 washers on top of the circle clip to take up the space. (I didn't on my Venture and friends) 9. Put it all back together in the same order it came apart. New washers, jet needle with circle clip tight (check it), 1 or more washers on top of circle clip, small spring, plastic screw, in that order. 10. Carefully reinstall slide and diaphram. Notice diaphram has a tab. 11. Do only one carb at a time. (Can use others as reference) 12. Go for a ride checking gas mileage and performance. My friends 87 Std. went from 37 to 45 mpg. 13. Clean and check spark plugs before and after. Correct color is gray, tan or clean depending on type of gas used. Slightly white electrodes is Ok if the plug base near threads is darker. white base and tip is too lean; black is too rich. 14. SO: Add washers under circle clip to richen, remove washers to lean. 15. My bike is faster now lean (hotter combustion) 16. I set pilot jet screws to 1 3/4 turns out 17.   15. Yes it's me. A bog just off idle is the idle circuit. Above 2k rpm is the needles. Don't guess, make a change. Just remember, write it down where everything is before you start messing with either circuit. Idle circuit, screw in/out 1/2 turn to see a difference. Can go back 1/4 turn later. Make sure they are all the same. Needles: You can richen as well as lean easily. Add 1-2 thin washers under the white spacer and/or circle clip to richen. To lean remove the white spacer and add washers about 1/2 the thickness of the white spacer. I'm thinking you are lean. High 40's mpg loaded down, is the indicator. Putting in a K&N is another. I just went back to the washers 1/2 the thickness of the white spacer because my mpgs were in the high 30- low 40's 2 up. Leave the lower fairings off until your satisfied with performance and MPG. Learned something new. If there is soot near the plug threads it is rich. Just looking at the 2 electrodes will not be a good indicator. Clean is good but then it is hard to determine too lean.
