Practice good friction zone rear brake parking lot maneuvers (Ride like a pro video) solo till you are comfortable going real slow and turning. Make sure to be straight up stopped with dry sand free footing and dont turn the bars too far when stopped unless you have good dry footing and know the consequences -don't ask me how I know. Then ride with passenger very gently and in a stress free setting where you can both feel comfortable and relaxed. My wife wasn't a big fan of riding (but would begrudgingly at times) till I started riding Ventures, she is very comfortable now. Combined we are 450 lbs and I haven't had an issue with either Venture.

Cutting down windshield from the bottom
Grisolm1 replied to Grisolm1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The shield actually bows outward slightly a few inches above the failing so the 3-4" cut won't be any narrower. If I were to cut off more than that it would start to get narrower. To be honest I'm thinking now of leaving it stock. Just rode home for the first time on this scooter in the rain, sheets right off at anything above 40mph, really no visibility problem. PO used only Plexus cleaner/polish. I do same. This stuff works great. -
Cutting down windshield from the bottom
Grisolm1 replied to Grisolm1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That's part of the reason I'm thinking cutting the bottom would be better. No risk of damage to the stock coating which is 8 years old but in pristine shape. -
Has anyone tried cutting the bottom of an RSV windshield and then slotting and drilling new mounting holes? I like this Idea since I think I would have problems getting such a smooth curve cutting the top portion and it would bother me every time I looked at it. Seems possible - potential issues. Limits fine tuning of height after the first cut so I had better get the height I want first time. I'm thinking 3" shorter for me but will check sight line over top with some scotch tape and inch marks. Bottom area of windshield will be slightly wider but seems there is enough clearance in the slot it fits into to accept the wider width. Anything else?

You WILL like the pull. No need to downshift like the V4s. Rev limit is fairly low but doesn't need em. Enjoy.

Barron's Big Air Kit

Dyna will be good even without the Vmax rear end, just shift later. No Idea why Yamaha deleted the most important 1000 RPM's from the stock setup but shifting a stock geared RSV at 7000 is a hoot. The engine does out of gas above 7000 so the 7500 RPM limit most folks use is just so you can keep it in the power band. I find shifting at 7000-7200 is ideal. Any more RPM's is just stressing the motor needlessly. I plan to do the VMAX rear this winter on the RSV. This will help off the line performance. My 1st Gen has a Vmax rear and I have yet to have a harley come close. Really pisses em off my 23 year old $2000 beater smokes their $20,000 rides in comfort:rotf::rotf:. BTW 1st Gens ARE noticeably faster. They don't run out of power at top end (35mm vs 32MM carbs?) and will easily spin past 8000 RPM (and dangerously float valves?) in lower gears if you aren't careful. Full disclosure, my neighbors 95" Stage 3 did beat my 1st Gen when I first got it but just barely. Then I found I was only running on 3 cylinders. He hasn't asked for a rematch. -
Wicked pissa and totally MINT! Scored an A- on this test. On my cell phone so too difficult to give a detailed response but really brought back some memories. Grew up near wooostah in the 70s. Thanks for the laugh, Ill be fowaading this one around faa shuaah.

Test drove a 2011 Strat deluxe recently. Highs -Torque everywhere, light handling (vs RSV). Lows vibration at any rpm through grips and pegs, much more than a Harley touring model and I have owned one and driven a few. Vibration is a deal breaker for me. Wrists go numb on my guzzi after an hour or so but that's my sport bike, not a tourer. Strat deluxe would have same problem. Make sure you get to take one for a long test drive first.

Bad relay switch
Grisolm1 replied to alvald83's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Had a similar problem with my gen1 but was more than driving lights being affected. Turned out to be bad ground from engine to frame. Ran a 2nd ground from battery to frame, 10 min fix for a problem that had plagued me for weeks, and all was well. Just a short large gauge wire from ground to a self tapping screw up near the steering head was all I did. Worth checking on yours. -
Gary You have more experience here so I standard corrected. When I did my mk2 I wasn't as knowledgeable so just bought the full barnett cellar setup. No slipping but spent more than I needed to. Barnett is closer to mk1 setup with coil springs. For my RSV plan to go PCW this winter for 1/3 the cost. Again $12 annual dues - money well spent.

The clutch covers may not interchange. Check basket shape.

When I lived in Mass you had to go to the insurance company 1st, buy your insurance, then go to the DMV. Been 25 years so not sure if its that way now but not a bad system in retrospect. Damn glad you weren't on the scooter. Read sometime back that statistically rear end crashes on bikes were just a few percent. I'm betting that percentage has gone WAY UP with cell phone and smart phone use. Be careful out there everyone.

Seems like the 06's have a much higher fail rate than any other year. Could be a vendor problem with that year? Wondering if my 03 could have trouble down the road, or earlier years are more or less problem free in this area?

I got a J&M for a good price off amazon. $70 or so I think. Overall I'm happy with it and it seems to fit well against the windshield. It's VERY functional BUT looks a little cheap compared to my Hopnel tank tuxedo, leather tank bra and pillow seats. If I had it to do again I'd get a nice leather one with the quarter turn latches and maybe some braiding, tooled leather or studs. Anything that fits an Electraglide with the long tabs should work fine. Planning a wider 4" shorter shield this winter and will cut in my own vent. Also plan to put in a 5V USB socket in the middle pouch for a variety of things. Still looking for a deal on a nice leather windshield bag but not going to pay full pop to replace what I have.

Why such low oil pressure on these motors
Grisolm1 replied to Grisolm1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Mobil one 15-50 is what PO used and he gave me a jug for next change. I usually use Rotella synthetic in the blue bottle and will plan to for my future changes. Oil pressure is quite high when cold and again is within yammy specs so I think (hope) this is normal. My gauge is very similar in type and install to Dingy's. -
I have a Drag Specialties liquid filled gauge installed by the PO with tap in usual place near the clutch. Pressure is within spec per the yammy manual so I believe it to be normal but as some of you know it's essentially 0psi with a hot motor at under 2k rpm. I have to assume it's reading the other side of the relief valve or something. Any of the experts here know why the readings are so darned low on a warmed up motor?

Pp sent. We have never met in person but there are no strangers here. Prayers and may god bless.

I was looking at a neighbors but went 1st gen instead. I remember when doing research that fuel pumps were an issue. Neighbors bike needed one too. It's still sitting in his yard. Also when I was looking 1st gens were much more avail on Craigslist. Parts could be an issue if you needed something quick. Hydraulic lifters are a nice feature.

Engine Compression and Performance
Grisolm1 replied to Bobby G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Many of my miles are commuting and easy riding with my better half. Spent about 200 miles of 80-90 mph solo interstate over the last few days. Idle has smoothed out noticeably. These motors LIKE having the coal poured into them! -
I'm always coming from east to get there so can't be much more help than a map. Check if route 9 works when coming up 91. Have fun.

If your time allows take either Rte 100 north in VT, great bike road but will be well traveled on the weekend peak times. Or even better slide on over to the NH side of the CT. River and take NH 12A, great road that almost no one knows about because Rte 100 is so popular. Also make sure to ride the Kangamangus Hwy in the White Mountain area. Lots of great views.
