  1. Front get a 3157 bulb to replace your weaker 1157. Rear 1156 is only option. All available at any auto parts store. Somewhere around 2005 they changed to a slightly different socket. I think the only upgrade on this series.
  2. Wet or dry sandpaper with abrasive on clamp side worked for mine.
  3. I've heard the key to HD longevity is to warm them up a bit before riding and certainly before riding them hard. I never had a bit of trouble with mine in 35k mi. I'm thankful the Venture doesn't have as many accessories avail. I was spending hundreds a month updating my BDAY. I just got tired of seeing my same bike 5-10x a day. Venture resale sucks but means you can get a deal on a low mileage bike that will last.
  4. The valvoline VR1 I am using now does have friction modifiers which are supposed to be a no no for these bikes but I have no clutch problems in 500+ mi so far. If the oil you are using has friction modifiers then this may be your issue, not the weight. If I end up having clutch slipping I'm going to find a 20/50 dino that doesn't. I like having oil pressure when cruising on a hot day. Yamaha specifies SM rated oil which the valvoline is. Not sure they specify JASO but they may. I just see SM on the sticker in the trunk.
  5. One common issue with Harley FLH touring models, at least before 09, when they redesigned them is rear suspension bottoming even fully aired up. I go over some fairly large bumps on one of my routes and it took me a while to stop instictivly lifting out of my seat in preparation for the jolt I always got on my Roadking. Ventures and many other bikes just glide over these.
  6. When I had my Y2k Roadking I found it would get 42 mpg NO MATTER HOW I drove it. Tried to ride easy to get more. Rode it hard to get less. 42 mpg... Darndest thing. My RSV can get 42 at its highest, 40 is more normal for me. Less on high speed Hwy. My 1st gen struggles to hit 40, 37 is normal.
  7. Only in the winter would I use thinner oil. I have a pressure gauge. These things need thicker oil.
  8. Prayers for a full and speedy recovery. Wally & Debbie
  9. Metal sleeve has threads. No swelling is possible. Neverseez yours now if you can get it out.
  10. Ended up having to drill the head off ON BOTH SIDES didn't need to take other side off but it had same issue. There is a fine threaded nut in a rubber holder that sits in the lowers. Bolt was rusted inside so nut in rubber just spins. NEVERSEEZ these bolts now before yours rust! On the road you are not getting these off if they end up like mine!
  11. Need to get to fuse panel. The inner cowling screw near the brake pedal just turns with no in or out movement no matter which way I turn screw.. Pressure against the cowling plastic doesn't help. Any trick to this? Seems like threads or nut? behind this is fubar. First time for me to try and remove. I guessing it has been off before since middle bottom push screw is missing. Wally
  12. Congrats on the new scoot. Now the obsession has officialy begun. Welcome to the madness.
  13. I That would be my approach if cases need to come apart. For $1200 you could have a good replacement motor at your door and sell your old one for a few hundred. Best thing would be you could still ride it till you had everything ready to swap.
  14. Snaged an fjr final drive for $70 with shipping. Pretty sure it has the spacer but will check against the axle diameter to be sure. Assuming the axle should be a fairly close fit into this hole. Am I right? I'd love to know the hole and bolt hole dimensions as well. Otherwise I'll bring both to a machinist. Winter project.
  15. I have a pressure gauge, here is my findings to date. Mobil 1 15-50 silver cap car oil. 0 --- YES 0! Oil pressure cruising hot on highway at 3000 Rpm. PO gave me 2 jugs so I changed it, no difference with fresh oil. Valvoline VR-1 20-50. 15 lbs at same condition. Haven't tried Rotella 15-40 yet but sure not going back to Mobil1!
  16. You will be in good company. I've had 4 Guzzi's. Eldo, 2 LemansI's and still have my Griso. Have to tell you the Ventures get 90% of my riding time now. Actually thinking about selling the Griso since it's giving me dirty looks. As long as you don't mind the weight at low speed you will love the venture. Any variety of Harley FLH mufflers can give you the sound you want. Just as reliable and long lasting as a Guzzi and much more comfortable. You should be happy.
  17. Krytox is a phenomenal lubricant with some interesting bonding properties. It's used in computer disk drives which is about as demanding as it gets for a lubricant. It's ridiculously expensive. Wish I still worked in that industry I'd find a way to snap up some.
  18. Buick dealer. Silhouette may be different. This was just the socket, not the whole light asy.
  19. My daughters Olds Intrigue had a melted signal light socket. Turns out a common GM problem. Think its not enough contact pressure in the socket. Replaced with new OEM socket $35. But won't be surprised if it doesn't come back again.
  20. I was in Harbor Freight (China tool inc.) yesterday and saw a set of left handed drill bits. Probably not the best quality but may help. Next time I'm in this bind myself at least I know where to go and get some to try. Ya I also though at this age there was no such thing as a bad screw.
  21. Prayers for a quick and full recovery.
  22. Understand your concern. Most of my riding is not superslab so 40-70 mph cruising is what I like vmax gears for. Sounds like you will be able to find stock gears ok.
  23. I have an FJR rear end coming in the mail. Do you know for sure it won't fit the RSV other than the long bolts you mention which can be possibly changed. Thanks Wally
  24. Just did a search and found a few fjr pumpkins for less than $100. Vmaxs were 2x that. Search for." EBay fjr1300 final drive" I bought one for my RSV. Now gotta find someone with a milling machine.
