  1. With my new Vmax rear I have seen no change in MPG. 37-42 depending on how/where I drive. Bike overall runs much smoother at lower speeds and needs less shifting. Solo - 4th is good down to 25MPH and 5th down to 35-40 MPH. I'm pretty happy with it. Seems like this should have come from the factory this way.
  2. Pics are a problem for me today. I'll try to post later, but it's easy to see if you have the problem. If your drive shaft pulls off the pumpkin in one piece (i.e. you can see splines on both ends) you are OK. My driveshaft had the spline socket from the pumpkin with it. When I pulled these two pieces apart on the bench, the nut, spring and broken piece of pinion shaft fell out. My pumpkin is sitting there without the spline socket. I can push on the broken shaft that remains and feel play. This only made noise on decel. During accel it was quiet as a kitten.
  3. My 88 sounded like a bucket of rocks was being shaken in the clutch area. Carb rebuild and a good synch cleared it up. These bikes seem to do weird things when the carbs are out of whack.
  4. While doing the vmax rear swap I noticed my wheel hub's teeth are about 1/3 worn off. Plenty of Mk1 wheels on Flebay. Will a good hub from one of these fit a Mk2? What about Vmax or 2nd gens? Inquiring minds want to know.
  5. It's official - snapped pinion shaft. Broke at the base of the nut like others on the site have reported theirs did. Guess I'm one in a thousand.
  6. I haven't pulled it apart yet. I plan on doing this when the Vmax rear arrives and I'll report what I find. The noise is too consistent with a floating pinion gear to be anything else, or to be safe to ride. So buying the Vmax rear was a small leap of faith to my diagnostic skills. It could well be a design or manufacturing defect but I'm sure I helped it along with the repeated sudden engine braking from redline in 2nd gear. Drive it more sanely and I'm sure my pinion would be going strong for many years. Anybody used Redline Shockproof gear oil in these pumpkins? It worked well in quieting down my Road King tranny and I run it with good results in my Guzzi's tranny and rear end. It's really thick but is rated at a lower viscosity. It likely wouldn't have prevented this pinion breakage but might take some of the rear whine out of the ventures. specs below from Redline website Heavy Shockproof A unique lubricant containing a suspension of solid microscopic particles as an extreme pressure agent--unique solid dispersion which cushions gear teeth to help prevent tooth breakage and allows the use of lower viscosities. Recommended for heavily-loaded racing differentials and transmissions, Off Road racing and problem gearboxes. The viscosity characteristics allow the lubricant to resist throwoff and provide a film thickness similar to a 75W250 grade, while providing the same low fluid friction as an SAE 75W90. The Red Line Heavy can be rated as a 75W250 Gear Oil, but has the lower internal fluid friction of an SAE 75W90. The LightWeight can be rated as a 75W140 Gear Oil, but has the lower internal fluid friction of an SAE 30 motor oil. Greatest extreme-pressure protection Lowest coefficient of friction available Reduces temperatures dramatically Provides thicker oil films between gear teeth Completely resists throw-off Reduces metal-to-metal contact Compatible with petroleums and synthetics Low fluid friction to improve power transfer Provides gear teeth shock loading protection Reduces gear noise and has little odor
  7. I think know why I broke it. I was hot dogging a lot in the last week or so which included taking it to red line in 1st & 2nd then dropping the throttle - a number of times. 1100 Lbs of bike, rider, fuel etc Plus 7500RPM Plus 65MPH Plus 10.5:1 compression Plus Sudden full engine braking Rinse Lather Repeat Equals Pinion Nut. Accelerating, the pinion thrust is one way due to the cut of the gears and good engineering practice for a powerful bike would have the pinion shaft in compression, not stressing the thread/nut. On Decel the thrust is exact opposite and most likely putting the pinion shaft/nut in tension. I was NOT gentle with it so BANG the pinion/nut suddenly took a lot of tension load. Was it fun? - hell ya! Will I do it again? - you bet! (But this time with a little gentler roll off on the happy handle:no-no-no:) My Vmax final drive is on it's way:mo money:
  8. Mine has always whined as well. Like wives I think they all do:confused24:. But it SUDDENLY got MUCH worse. Randy's explanation seems consistent with the behavior. Guess I'll know this weekend. Does anybody know which years of VMAX rear ends fit in case major surgery is required. I know from Skydoc's explanation his shim is needed. Thanks Wally
  9. On the way home a new noise cropped up on my 88 after getting off the highway. Fairly loud gear whine when decel or coasting. Sounds as it is coming from rear end. Slightest bit of throttle quiets it right down. Checked pumpkin and engine oil, fine. Prior to this the bike made pretty much the same mechanical sounds as a brand new 2010 I took for a test drive. Some noise at coasting and decel but it definitely just got louder all of a sudden. This bike is new to me (64K mi now) so don't know what maintenance has been done to the splines drive pins etc. I'll pull it apart this weekend and have a look and slop some moly 60 in there. Is this a common noise (decel only) for dry splines and pins or am I looking at a bad rear pumpkin?
  10. What do you mean with "Total tear down"? Also what color is your 88 Standard? Stripped and soaked each carb in a coffe can of coleman camp fuel for a week minimum. Blew out all passages with carb cleaner. All gaskets, float valve, o- rings, decel diaphragm and main diaphragms replaced. My std is silver and brown. What color is yours?
  11. FYI My stock? nylon spacers (with the little nub) measured 0.100". Replaced them with 0.75" worth of washers of correct dimensions and had spring action going on. Mileage didn't improve measurably, still ~37 and the bike had a definite lean condition so I took them out.
  12. Mine did an idle hunt and behaved differently at temperature. Carb Synch cured this. If idle circuits are not clogged I'd try carb synch next.
  13. I tried the shim mod but ended up taking it back out. Anybody have any advice to improve mileage other than keeping my lead foot out of it New diaphraghms New decel rubbers (small diaphraghms on side) Total tear down New Wires, Caps Plugs Stock needle bushing was 0.100" Went to 0.75" and it felt too lean with surging. Mileage remained about same 35-38 mpg so I went back to 0.100" Bike runs real strong with no noticalbe lag at 0.100" Definitely running on all 4. Where are you guys running your idle screws with this mod? I tried 2 2-1/4 and 2 1/2 with no noticible difference in surging at moderate throttle. Maybe this mod needs more than 2 -1/2 turns out?
  14. Thanks Gary Are the valves/ports different on the Vmax heads vs Venture 1300. I know the cams and valve springs are different. Did you get the vboost to fit yours? Mufflers! We don't neeeed no steeenking mufflers! Just kidding, but one of the most awesome sounding bikes I've heard was a built Vmax with aftermarket pipes. First Japanese bike I felt like I could have a passion for. Sounded like a NASCAR engine. I was real happy when I discovered that the same heart has been hiding all these years in a bike my wife would ride for more than 20 minuites. Yamaha probably would have sold a bunch more if they advertised it properly, er, make that at all. I've been into bikes for most of my life and only recently discovered the joys of 1st gen ownership. Truly an under-rated versatile ride with huge upgrade potential.
  15. Prayers please for the family of Tom Haugh. Cut down by another IDIOT cager! He was a good loving family man and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Not sure what else to say at this time except he is surely in heaven looking down at his family. SUWANEE — Police have charged a Suwanee woman in the death of a motorcyclist near a Gwinnett County high school last week. Police on Friday arrested Anne Clements, 46, on misdemeanor vehicular homicide charges and with failure to yield, a traffic violation. Investigators believe Clements was southbound on Suwanee Dam Road in a 2009 Honda Civic when she turned in the path of Suwanee resident Thomas Haugh, 53, who was riding a 2007 Kawasaki KL650 motorcycle. Haugh was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene. Clements was attempting to enter a school driveway at the time of the 11:30 a.m. collision Thursday, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Brian Kelly. Kelly was unsure what purpose Clements had in visiting the high school. Jail records list her as unemployed. Clements posted $2,600 bond and was released from the Gwinnett County Jail later Friday.
  16. Thinking about looking for a crashed VMAX to begin a swap to my MK2. Figure having the whole bike would be better than buying pieces. Anyone done this? Were you happy? What are best year VMAX's to look for? Will stock collector just strangle this thing?
  17. Nice bike! Never seen that type of windshield before with the side deflectors. Anyone know who makes it?
  18. I got my best mileage ever, 40mpg, last weekend riding with a buddy on his Beemer dualsport. We were riding fairly easy on secondary roads and I was keeping it in a lower gear than I usually do. Looks like 3500-4500 is a better RPM than 2500-3500 at moderate speeds.
  19. $300 is a no brainer. I spent over $130 just for the tool, shims and new gaskets to do it myself but it's good for a while. 5 intakes and one exhaust tight.
  20. Awesome guys, this site ROCKS! Bought it. Now I can do a proper job without rushing. How are you guys dealing with sealing header pipes back in reliably. I've read about various work arounds to the ridiculously priced yammy pipe/collector gaskets. Copper tubing, copper wire, re-use old gaskets. What has worked for you, what hasn't.
  21. Don't worry, I don't have the heart to part out the 84, it runs and looks far too good. For $350 bucks I thought I was buying a basket case but lo and behold other than 2nd gear it's in better shape than my 88 which I have far more$ tied up in. Looks like the 88 will be down for a couple of weeks while I do the fix. With my schedule I get far too little time to do bike maintenance.
  22. You are right!!! I recently bought a whole 84 with busted 2nd gear for parts like this but it's too nice to part out so my buddy is riding it, shifting around 2nd gear. He's praying to the pope that I can get a collector, otherwise his ride becomes the parts bike it was intended to be....... Anybody here who can help my friend keep his ride?????
  23. 88's collector has the typical rattle that's driving me crazy. I'm looking to buy a spare to modify so I can just do a 1-1 swap in a day. Anyone have one available? Thanks
  24. Carb synch WAY off will do this as well. My clutch was LOUD at idle like yours and quieted with the clutch pulled in. I replaced the 6003 and no change so was concerned about the inner clutch bearing being gone. With a good carb synch all clutch noise dissapeared. Seems one cylinder was doing all the work at idle and upsetting the clutch.
  25. Clutch noise could just be a really bad carb synch. My clutch was sounding like a rock crusher and wnet away with the lever pulled in. With rebuilt carbs and only a visual bench sych so far the noise completely disappeared. When I tore down the carb rack one butterfly was noticably more open than the others. This cylinder was punching the clutch basket at idle. PO said he did a carb synch but obviously didn't get it right.
