83 brake upgrade
Squidley replied to woodfish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Marty, Unfortunately the only way your going to upgrade your 1200 Venture brakes is to swap out front forks from a 1300 '86 and up bike. The R1 calipers work well, and I have delinked mine on my '86 and like it even more. Condor is spot on with what he has done with his and thats pretty much what you need to pursue.... -

How to remove carburetor.
Squidley replied to Chaharly's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I just went through a set that I am installing on my '86. It's not for the faint of heart, there is a lot going on as all 4 carbs have to be separated to get at the floats. I'll let you in on a secret, I have probably about $350+ in rebuild kits, air cutoff valves and such. If your going to do, I would suggest you take your time and go through them right. I posted a thread about setting the floats a few weeks back, Dingy and MiCarl were gracious enough to help me along with it as well as a couple others. Take your time, dont be in a hurry, and have a clean light colored rag ot shirt to lay it all out on. Take 1 carb apart at a time. Take pics of every angle before you start your disassembly, we can help you along if you get stuck.- 15 replies

You haven't mentioned what air pressure is being run in the rear shocks. I have owned 6 1st gen Ventures, and have ridden them all up to 100 mph. There is something still not right with your sons. I have run the Shinko's on 1 of my 1st gens and other than the rear wearing fast, about 7K I had zero issues with the tires, matter of fact I have a new set in the garage thats going on to the '86 I currently own. If the front forks are original, replace them, they are long past due and worn out. Progressive springs are probably the most popular and easiest to do. The fork oil, unless you installed it, is a crap shoot to what weight it is and how much is in there. I have 10 wt oil in my front shocks and run the air at about 12 psi as I like a firm feel in the curves. The rear shock I run about 35 to 40 psi solo, I weight 280 lbs and stand 5' 11" so I offer good downward ballast. Also too, it is possible that the rear wheel isn't in it's neutral position if you did the tire work yourself. There is a sequence to reinstalling the rearend on these bikes. Give us a bit more info if you can, we can figure out damn near anything on this forum with enough information....

Gear case cover
Squidley replied to usedcyclesales's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Some of the gaskets really stick well, the middle gear cover on the G2 also holds the pivot shaft for the gear shifter. That could be a little sticky as well, you might want to cover the outside of the cover with a towel and give it a good rap with a rubber hammer to break the seal.... -
Happy Birthday Kent...69, really!!

Thomas, Have you tried wiggling the key as you try to start the bike, or sprayed some WD40 into the ignition slot? I would try that and that would be a clincher if it starts to the ignition being bad. The next thing I will mention is make sure the battery connections are tight and clean, both on the battery and their contact points to the started solenoid and the grounding spot on the frame

David is at home recovering now, I dont have a lot of information on him, but he is home. -
I have all my military records in the fire safe and my DD214, I'll check into that. All the money I have been spending at Lowe's and Home Depot on the new house this will really add up

You do pretty good for an OLD guy!

Funny you mention this Brian.... I was in Lowe's yesterday and I had my Navy cap on. An older gent behind me also had a Navy cap on and started up a conversation. He served for 30 years and mentioned about Lowe's offering the same as Home Depot, 10% he mentioned I might want to check into that. I am going to pay attention to this thread as I wouldn't mind finding out about getting an ID if I can

If you have it down under, spray some WD40 into the switch housing. Take some compressed air and at low pressure blow into the housing after you have sprayed the WD40 in it. Work the switches from different pressure spots on them. I wouldn't pull the switches apart unless your very comfortable doing it, it can be a disaster in the making....

Shell Rotella T 15/40..... -
The biggest issue with that, besides not having the use of the intercom, is also not having the CB. It would be great on a standard Venture as these didn't come with all the gadgets. The only other option that I could think of if you did it, was to also install one of the J&M handlebar mount CB/intercom units on the bike.

Hey All, This '86 I have has been putting me through my paces. It's my primary transportation and this is the 2nd time it's went down hard in the last month. I just completely redid the clutch in it, with all new steels, friction discs and slave cylinder. I now am in need of the stator magnet, or rotor assembly as it's called, it's part # 26H-81450-10-00 I just checked and from '83 to '89 is the same part # and all should work with what I need. The bolts that hold it and the starter clutch together came loose and took out the windings on the stator. I have a new HO stator kit coming from Earl (Skydoc 17) but upon inspection yesterday when I pulled the assembly apart off the crankshaft, I noticed the holes are a bit wallowed out and I'd like to replace it. If anyone of you 1st genners with multiple parts bikes have the magnet along with the 6 retaining bolts I would love to hear from you. My cell # is in my profile, and I'll be on the site daily to check for messages....Thanks in advance
