  1. Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Dedicated to my Tessie of 15 years. Thank you for your unconditional love and dedication my beloved pet. Crossed the Rainbow Bridge 10 August 2012 @ 4:10PM Boomer....with heavy heart and many tears....
  2. O.K. folks, I am not a Venture owner, my son is. He bought an 84 XVZ 12 DL. Has complained about high speed stability from day one. I just returned from a short ride (about 75 mph) on I 75. The bike feels as though it's riding on rain grooves or a draw bridge grate at these speeds. I wouldn't take a long distance trip on this motorcycle if you paid me. We need some help,,, Please! A bit of background. Both my son and I are long time performance auto mechanics. Rob just mounted a set of Shenco Tour Master tires. Re- packed/ replaced wheel bearings, replaced brake rotors, removed and greased final drive splines, checked and adjusted steering head bearings ( set with a very slight drag with wheel off ground). We've checked swing arm bearings (no play) and I went over the rear frame with a flashlight looking for cracks (yes, I had my glasses on). The only way he'll ride is with the rear tire at 45 lbs. the front at 37. Though keeping the tires over inflated (my opinion) helps, this thing is almost scary. My Eleven is more stable over bridge grates. What do we do/ look for? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  3. You've been waiting for them with bated breath, so without further ado, here are the 2011 Darwin Awards: Eighth Place In Detroit, a 41-year-old man got stuck and drowned in two feet of water after squeezing head first through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve his car keys. Seventh Place A 49-year-old San Francisco stockbroker, who "totally zoned when he ran", accidentally jogged off a 100-foot high cliff on his daily run. Sixth Place While at the beach, Daniel Jones, 21, dug an 8 foot hole for protection from the wind and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom, when it collapsed, burying him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beach used their hands and shovels trying to get him out but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him. Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital. Fifth Place Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed as he fell through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor. Fourth Place Sylvester Briddell, Jr., 26, was killed as he won a bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger. Third Place After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather & Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up and fired a few wild shots from a target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, and several customers also drew their guns and fired. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt. HONORABLE MENTION Paul Stiller, 47, and his wife Bonnie were bored just driving around at 2 A.M. so they lit a quarter stick of dynamite to toss out the window to see what would happen. Apparently they failed to notice that the window was closed. RUNNER UP Kerry Bingham had been drinking with several friends when one of them said they knew a person who had bungee-jumped from a local bridge in the middle of traffic. The conversation grew more excited, and at least 10 men trooped along the walkway of the bridge at 4:30 AM. Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge, they discovered that no one had brought a bungee rope. Bingham, who had continued drinking, volunteered and pointed out that a coil of lineman's cable lay nearby. They secured one end around Bingham's leg and then tied the other to the bridge. His fall lasted 40 feet before the cable tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. Bingham's foot was never located. AND THE WINNER IS.... Zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt ( Paderborn , Germany ) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief. Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded. The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked Mr Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves... '**** happens' IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPORTANT TO THANK THESE PEOPLE FOR REMOVING THEMSELVES FROM THE GENE POOL.
  4. A friend and I are planning a spring trip to Talcott WV down RT 16 from the Ohio River. I am trying to avoid Summerville and Gauley Bridge. Gauley Bridge has 750 resisdents. They write more speeding tickets than anywhere in the state or WV. They write MORE than the state capitol city. I would be coming from the Cleveland Ohio area and want to avoid these spots. Any suggestions from our WV brothers? I want to take 16 down so I can see the folks and turn off before the traps. 16 is also just a great road. Thanks, Geo

After a laugh, the snorkeling equipment went back into their car, though they almost needed it. After finishing their meal Friday night, the Kinanes and 81 others found themselves floating downstream during the dinner rush when the restaurant broke from its moorings. It came to rest against a bridge about 100 feet downriver, and all on board had to be rescued, one at a time, with a makeshift gangplank of ladders and ropes. Women were rescued first, then the men. "We were joking about the river," Kathy Kinane told The Associated Press on Saturday morning. "Well, the joke's on us now." Officials said the hours-long rescue was orderly and calm. One patron would climb down the gangplank wearing a life jacket, which would then be sent back up for the next person. Kathy Kinane said she had to take off her heels to make her way down. Among those rescued was former Cincinnati Bengals star Cris Collinsworth, Covington fire Capt. Chris Kiely said. Collinsworth, a pro football commentator for NBC, has long been associated with Waterfront owner and restaurateur Jeff Ruby. On the waterfront's menu for $40 is the "Steak Collinsworth," along with other steaks and high-end entrees including lobster, sea bass and tuna. The restaurant is one of several on the river in Covington, just across from Cincinnati. Kinane and her husband, Bill - frequent patrons of the Waterfront - had arrived around 7:30 p.m. and listened to music for awhile before joining another couple at a table for dinner. They were finishing up around 10:15 when they felt an ominous bump. Kinane said her husband peered out the window and saw that the barge was moving with the fast-paced current. They had eaten there before with the water levels rising, but the boat had always remained in place. "That was not a good thing," she said. "We said, 'Let's get up and leave.'" However, they found a crowd near the exit. The walkway ramp had broken loose from shore, and the patrons had no way of getting off the barge. TV footage showed diners pacing aboard the boat as firefighters put together the makeshift bridge above the water, which was swirling with broken tree limbs and other debris. Kiely said several patrons had used cell phones to call for help. The power never went out, and tugboats and emergency crews arrived quickly, Kinane said. The barge started moving when a main cable came loose, leaving the remaining cables to handle more pressure than they could withstand, said Covington Fire Chief Chuck Norris. Surveliance footage shows a tall woman identified as Yama Mama leaving the scene on a 1999 RSV ridden by a hooded gent. She was seen tossing a pair of bolt cutters into the Ohio river while shouting "see you all in chat". A short red-headed accomplice made her getaway on foot. The barge came to rest against a bridge that spans the river, though the U.S. Coast Guard and other workers were still working Saturday to keep the boat secure until it could be towed back to its proper place. The Coast Guard and other boats worked to keep the restaurant in place until it could be moved - and it was unclear when that would happen, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Rob Reinhart. The river was already at least 3 feet above flood stage, according to the National Weather Service. Traffic flowed normally across the bridge, and trains moved on an adjacent track uninterrupted. "If the bridge wasn't there it could have traveled down the river quite a ways," said Rob Carlisle, co-owner of C&B Marine of Covington, which had dispatched a towboat to help secure the restaurant's front end. The barge had come to a halt by the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge, one of several linking Cincinnati with northern Kentucky. Reinhart said the restaurant likely would be heavily damaged if it broke free again because the top of the barge stands higher than the bottom of the bridge. He said it would have been up to local authorities to order restaurants to close because of the high river levels, though it could not immediately be determined who would be responsible for that decision. Calls by the AP to restaurateur Jeff Ruby were not returned Saturday. He owns or operates several restaurants in Cincinnati and surrounding areas. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. 8. Has anyone ever gone to Bridge Day in West Virgina? People free fall from the New River Gorge Bridge. 800 and something feet high. Oh I do not plan to jump myself, unless Ron pushes me off the bridge. It says it is the biggest festival in West Virginia! 9. Get your mind out of the gutter! I am riding up to the Upper Peninsula in a couple weeks, showing my bride some places I visited as a kid. One of my childhood memories is of the pasties we enjoyed. Unfortunately, as a kid I didn't pay much attention to where we got them. I vaguely remember getting them from trucks or stands... something only sort of permanent. So, does anyone have a recommendation for a good pasty joint? I think timing-wise, some place close to the Mackinaw Bridge on the St Ignace side would work. Otherwise, we are headng up to the Soo Locks, camping at Brimley SP, then heading across to the Keweenaw Peninsula via Munising and Marquette. Ideas? Dave
  10. After a search by home land security we were allowed to go across hoover dam. It was a sight to see with lots of traffic both vehicle and foot. They are building a bypass road and bridge that will cross the canyon about 500 yards from the dam. The two sides of the bridge arch support are up and most of the road on both sides are done
  11. I worked for 2 hours this evening rerouting the stream behind the house. The culvert is completely plugged and covered. The last flood I had a foot of water under my house from the hillside run off.Recently water has been flowing into the back yard and pooling where my septic field is.I took the FEL and cut a 4 ft wide channel across the dirt road and back into the original stream path. Were anticipating 2 inches of rain over the next day or so and the ground is saturated now. That private drive behind my house is no longer maintained by anyone and the road is a real mess. A two foot deep channel has been bringing the run off my way for almost a year. My neighbor stopped by after I was done and said you know your loosing your foot bridge tonight. It seems the neighborhood A$$#%#@^ pushed a 7ft wooden school bus shed over the hill into the creek just above my bridge last night. So tonight when the flood comes we may loose the foot bridge. Last time it was taken out a upstream chicken house done it. Guess we will see what happens in the morning. This much I know NO RIDING ANYTIME SOON.
  12. Here are the pics for Gettysburg and the Natural Bridge stop Sledgehammer, Mechanic and I made on the way. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%20Gettysburg%2020090418/
  13. I had some work that needed done around the house Saturday. So I went for a ride. I was out for around nine hours and put on maybe 400 miles. Here are a few pictures I took along the way. The first place is called Hanging Rock. It is located on the Wabash River near Salamonie Reservoir in northern IN. This lone chunk of rock juts up out of the ground almost 100' where the rest of the landscape around it is pretty flat. This unusual (for northern IN) geological feature is known all over the world. It's only a few feet from the road, but when the leaves are out on the trees, it's completely hidden from view. Amazingly, it's not hard to climb to the top of it. The next two pictures are from the top looking out at the river, one to the east and the other to the west. The next two pictures are the covered bridge in Roann, IN. It's a dirty little town, not much to look at. But this bridge is in excellent shape. It's open to traffic, but the main road has been routed around it with a modern bridge, which is where I took these. As for the house project work, well, we'll see what happens next Saturday.
  14. Mackinac Vacation Photos My wife was able to take many photographs on this trip. It helped that I bought my laptop along so we could off load the photos from her camera to my laptop then to one of our servers at home for safe storage. (Just in case disaster happened on the trip.) Anyways, she posted some of the photos on her photography blog. 15. Sunday Ron and I rode to Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge, which is located in the Daniel Boone National Forest. We have been there before, and just spontaneously decided to go there again. But I forgot how steep the trails are. Really beautiful. Here are some photos. I am still sore, but it was still fun. Yama Mama:7_2_104[1]:
  16. On our vacation we went to Mackinaw City, Mi. To get there we crossed the Mighty Mac. This bridge is impressive. To get all the details on the bridge visit it's web site [/url]http://www.mackinacbridge.org/. It is 5 miles long and is the third longest suspension bridge in the world and the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere. First trip across, the video run time is 6:05 minutes. This is how long it took us to cross the bridge doing the speed limit of 45mph. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpaaFCTYZOY]YouTube - Crossing the Mackinac Bridge[/ame]
  17. Saltydog (Wayne) and Krome Rose(Brandy) came to visit today. So we took them on a little ride to Elizabeth City to eat and then rode back across the S Bridge here in Hertford. Got some nice pics of the clouds they were rather puffy and slightly ominous looking at times. The first few water pics are the Chowan River then the Perquimans river. We have a lot of water around here. Last 7 pics are of the S bridge. Margaret
  18. My son and I will be leaving Tuesday morning and taking 90 out of the Cleveland area. We plan to cross over into Canada via the Peace Bridge in Buffalo. This is not a very long ride for us, only about 6 hours maybe. If anybody else is going that way on the same day though, you are welcome to join us.
  19. OK ventureriders, Here is the thread that I am starting on what you can see if you come to the 2008 International Rally. I hope many more of my local riding buddies will contribute many more posts below (one item per post would be neat) but contribute as many posts as you want. I'll start with the "Kissing Bridge", the only remaining covered bridge open to auto traffic in Ontario. I won't talk about how it lives up to its name when the ladies flock to watch a beautiful brown 86 VR and its handsome rider go through it.
  20.
