  1. Temps here in North Texas today was in the mid 70's. Went for a long, long ride; about 160 miles or so. Blue skies most of the time. Glad I live in Texas.
  2. I was taught the motor can be cold, or warmed. I suppose you could get it to normal operating temp but by time you pulled all the spark plugs and screwed in for the first cylinder it would already be under normal temp. Anyway, I was taught to perform this test when cold and add 5% to the numbers.
  3. Wow, I didn't know that. Learn something new everyday. Thanks
  4. Can someone give me a quick verbal (walkthru) of how to "properly" perform a compression check. Bike is an 86. I have a pretty good idea of how to check the compression, but since it has been literally years since I've done one on anything, I just need a quick review of the procedure. Here's how I would do one. Once the motor is exposed, I would 1) remove all the spark plugs 2) short out all the spark plug wires to not harm the CDI box 3) connect gauge 4) at full throttle, crank the motor over until max pressure is observed on the gauge for each cylinder 5) if low one tests low (what would be low??), squirt a little oil in that cylinder chamber then recheck 6) record all results Good compression would be where no one cylinder is more than 10 off from any other. Add anything you think I missed or should know before proceeding. Thanks
  5. Sure is a boring ride to Lubbock but I am always interested in riding another direction, so I'll be there depending on the days of the week this thing goes. I prefer April versus May as May is already too hot, windy and dusty. May even fire up the ole MH and pull my rider out there. Count me in.
  6. Yeah sure, and when you do, I'm sure it replaces 3 packages of X-Lax.
  7. This thread is killin me !
  8. Dear Swifty, No need to 'read between the lines'; I will be straight forward......I just havent been caught. Now go decipher other posts. One other thing, you "have" ridden beside me. Your memory must be failing.
  9. Yep, I know what you mean. Was looking at and test drove a 13 Nissan GTR. Talk about a car that could get you in trouble. That dang car runs the 1/4 miles a little faster than a FJR with someone on it that is half my weight (11.18 sec). But for $97K that is as far as I got....a test drive. Oh; thought I'd throw in that I haven't had a ticket in nearly 30 years maybe longer.
  10. Finally hit 3k mileage on that 11 FJR I now own. On a ride this past Saturday, had a couple 2d genners try to hang with me both through the twisties (embarrassing for them) and to gain up distance they lost through the twisties in the straight aways) all while heading up and back down FM4 in North Texas. I think one of em ran outta gas cause I have no idea where they went. Ha Ha. What a fun, fast scooter to ride. I really must be careful. Want to ride it down to the Leakey ride but will have to wait to see if I can take vacation off from the nut house.
  11. I think you should send your wife to answer the white courtesy phone then on the BBQ alone Ask Scooter Bob to put on a tube top, ride passenger on the HD, and you and him bar hop together around the state. :rotf:
  12. Speaking of dumb. I've read posts; won't mention where, where someone was asking how the oil was checked. They weren't harley owners either. My point is regardless of the type bike one may ride has nothing to do with their IQ. Who knows that 2013 Harley FLHTCUI Screamin Eagle may be all the poor fella can afford.
  13. My cat left part of a rat for me outside the back door this morning. I think it was the rear part so my cat did give a rats ass. Plus it was raining.
  14. I believe you have installed the clutch plates 180 degrees out. Wish I had a better way of explaining this. The symptom you are experiencing is exactly the result. Go the tech forum and read about installing a clutch in 1st Gens.
  15. I've checked the clutch basket on my 86 a number of times over the four years I've owned it. I've found that the basket has slight movement left to right and up and down but no movement in and out. I believe that is normal. I don't havent worried bout it cause when removing the entire basket, the shaft it mounts to has no movement what so ever. You sure the whine isn't coming from the final drive or drive shaft? These lst editions can surely make a fool out of anyone trying to pinpoint where a specific sound is emulating from. I'd check out the final drive and middle gear.
  16. Hey Brad; want to take on this old man's FJR?
  17. Appearance is everything these days. No one gives a crap bout functionality. Gotta look good ya know. My 2 cents.
  18. I think your best bet would be to replace the entire oil pan/bottom cover. I just looked at mine (an 86) and I bet it can be accomplished without much more than pulling the pan without anything else. I remember reading on here somewhere, it is quite easy.
  19. My "Sheila" would highly disagree.
  20. For all you Texan wannabe's, San Antonio is not West Texas. San Antonio is somewhat civilized.
  21. Are you sure you are tryin to install the right sized plug?
  22. You must be smokin some of the green stuff moving at 1,000,000 miles per joint, too. Come you know "green" is faster.
  23. I just picked up a new Nolan N104. A really breezy modular. When sittin at light in 100+ degrees, this full face becomes an open face with the flip of a switch. Lots of vents and built in shades. This is the most comfortable helmet I've ever had with great interior air flow.
