http://stores.advmonster.com/-strse-LED-Lights/Categories.bok has a variety of led driving lights. I have a set of the Model 60s on my FJR and they are bright. I think they are 3300 lumen and draw only 3.4 amps each. I am waiting on a second pair to mount on a 92 VR.

Yeah, one of em may have gotten tangled up in the back wheel causing her to loose control.

I had Maybelle; my English Retriever; spayed in July 2/12. I, too, was a bit concerned due her feeling pretty lethargic for a couple days. So, I offered her a 16oz t-bone grilled medium rare. Man on man did she get active right away. Must had been puttin on an act. Did I say she is my best bud?

I have recently purchased a 1992 VR and can't believe it, but the right front rotor is warped. Every time you use the front brake the front end vibrates in harmony with the speed you're going at the time you pull on the brake lever. Stops smoothly if using the foot brake which activates the left front rotor. Check how true the suspect rotor is with a metal ruler attached to the right side fork with a C clamp and it is nowhere near true. Very unusual in my opinion for a warped front brake rotor. Anyway, I have an excellent replacement and am in the process of doing so. My question for all those with more expertise than I is what is the difference between each of the front rotors? I cannot see any difference at all. But if you look the part numbers in Partshark/'s, Stadium Yamaha/s and other websites for OEM stuff the rotors have a different part number. Reason I'm asking is I am sure the replacement rotor I have is a front just don't know if it was previously on the left or right. Ha, almost sounds political.

Other than paying the normal import custom dues, you of course have the cost of shipping. Make sure you find a qualified and reputable international Non-Vessel Operator Common Carrier (NVOCC). My recommendation would be Carotrans or Kintetsu. Both have offices all over California. Motorcycles are considered dangerous cargo by the International Maritime Organization and if shipped with fuel in the fuel tank (must not be more than 1/4 full) the bike must be "declared" as UN3166, Vehicle, Flammable Liquid Powered, Class 9. If the fuel is completely drained, the motor run until it stalls for lack of fuel, the battery disconnected and the cables taped back to prevent short circuiting, the bike will be considered as non-dangerous cargo. Do not allow anyone to tell you the battery must be removed, they are absolutely wrong. 49 CFR in 176.905 (which you can google) explains all the requirements but Special Provision 962 of the International Dangerous Goods Code also applies. The title will have to be presented to a customs agent for clearance before loading the vessel. I say vessel because I assume you are not interested in air shipment and if you are, the cost of air shipment is about 15 times the amount of surface transport (rail, truck and vessel). I would also make darn sure your NVOCC makes their booking with a highly trained steamship operator (Hyundai, APL or Hapaq Lloyd to name a few). Your bike will be palletized for loading in a ocean container with lots of other freight, so make sure you personally supervise that process (and approve their methods) cause they will be using banding material to secure the bike to a "double" pallet or a specially constructed pallet. A good experienced NVOCC will construct a large wooden box for loading your bike. I highly recommend that for international transport. The bike will move from the USWC by rail to most likely New York where it will be loaded on a container vessel for a 8 day voyage probably to Felixstowe, GB where import duties will have to be paid or perhaps your NVOCC can arrange prepayment. That depends on the NVOCC you choose and the services they provide. Basically the better their services are, the more you are going to have to pay. Cost will vary depending on the NVOCC you choose and the vessel operator they make their booking with. Don't ask me how I know all this stuff. Herb

Tryin to find a special part
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Pete. I have one on my 86 and I have thought of that already. But I am just looking to avoid having to fabricate. If nobody replies they have one, I will do exactly as you recommend. I can get the measurements from the one I have. Thanks so much. -
I am in the process of dressing up the "new to me" 92 VR. I opened one of my boxes of stuff and found the two chrome side plates that replace the OEM black plastic plates that cover the area behind the clutch cover on the right side and the empty void above and behind the middle gear cover. Well I have the plates but the left side has a special mounting bracket that replaces the OEM bracket on top of the middle gear. It is that special bracket I am missing. If anyone has one they aren't using and would be willing to part with for whatever amount or perhaps trade for some part I may have, please let me know.

and need something to do. So, before I start my next project I ask those with more expertise than I what if any problems I will face. Here is what I am talking about. I have a fantastic looking 86. The body work on the bike has very, very few flaws and those that it does have most would have trouble finding. But the bike does have an 89 motor that runs fairly well. The original motor had a serious issue with what I think was a bad wrist pin, thus the 89 motor. I picked up the 89 motor on ebay from a popular gent out in California. Most of you would know him if I were to mention his name but I wont. Anyway, the 89 motor has almost 60k on it now and that is assuming what was reported to me as having 45K on its clock was accurate. Yesterday, I purchased a 92 1st edition that has an honest 28k original miles; it runs fantastically smooth, quiet, super easing to shift and is really impressive. The problem with the bike is first I don't care for blue and the body work has several deep scratches that could be repaired but then those body parts would require repainting. So here is what I am planning..... I am planning to make the 92 look like an 86 by swapping all the brown body parts to the 92 and all the blue body parts from the 92 to the 86. I think I will be busy for a long while because there are several ccessories that would have to be removed and reinstalled; driving lights, Zumo 550, bag bars with lights, and others. Concerning all the plastic; what problems, if any, will I encounter? I dont believe any but some may advise me otherwise. Thanks

I wonder why it's called "the dark side". I also ride an FJR and I'd never run a CT on it. In my opinion you are just asking for an even darker side when you do.

Right side (as you are sitting on it). Remove the r/h side cover. The rear brake master cylinder is just above the on-off-reserve gas cock. Square looking thing.

Cruise Issues
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Gary; is that the left side as one is sitting on the bike or from a front view? And by the way, the ignitech works great. Sure did smooth out the engine quite a bit; very noticeable. A much smoother operating motor and noticably more power. Even got it to mount on top of the air box. Great investment in this 1st Gen. Thanks. -

No, just the plastic connectors so that the next time I pull them apart it isn't so difficult. -
Cruise Issues
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
No, in my first post I failed to mention that I did disassemble both the brake and clutch switches and both are operating properly. Clean and lubed with dielectric grease anyway. Once the speed is set using the Resume button (as I stated in my first post) the clutch switch or front brake switch will deactivate/cancel the cruise. However, the foot brake will not cancel the cruise. I wonder if it could be due the fact that I have two LED bulbs in the tail light and there isn't enough draw for the system to recognize. Just a thought though because the front does induce cancellation. Anway, not the clutch switch. -
I have been trying to figure out what could be wrong with my 86's CC system but all to no avail. The bike has developed two issues really. First it won't set speed. When hitting the Set button, the Set light illuminates but the system does not set. If I use the "Resume" but it sets the current speed and decels and accels normally. The other issue is that once the speed is set using the "Resume" button, it seems not to hold speed and slowly decelerates but I don't believe it ever shuts down completely even after dropping 5 mph or more. I have replaced the CC Unit with a known good unit and cleanted the Set/Resume switch and know it is working properly. I have also concluded the issue can't be the vacuum pump otherwise it wouldn't set speed at all nor the acutater pump for the same reason. I have all concluded the "speed sensor" may need to be replaced but after reviewing several threads and the service manual, no where is the Speed Sensor even shown. Where is the doggone Speed Sensor anyway, and could it be causing my issues or at least the "not holding a steady speed" issue? Is the speed sensor inside the speedometer and must be replaced as an entire dash or something?Anyone with more experience than I have with this system, I sure would appreciate your advise as to what possibly I should be looking for. Thanks so much.

Replacing Starter

I will never do that again. If I ever again mention replacing a starter on this site, the closest member needs to come kick my ass.

MasterGuns replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep, the good ole VTS. Still have several run pins from them. -
Amsoil would never cause this issue and I'll third it, the clutch fluid, which is nothing more than regular brake fluid, is old and has absorbed too much air. When cold the issue is not apparent, but once the fluid heats up, the air expands causing a "no clutch" and a difficult shift perhaps no shift at all. Replace the clutch fluid and your bud will be on the road again.

Replacement starter
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Think I meant 99. Sorry -
After reading several threads here all about replacing the stock 2 brush starter on an 86 XVZ1300 Royale with a 4 brush because the 4 brush is suppose to be so much better, I just bought a starter from a 98 XVZ1300 Royal Star Venture. Sure hope it is a four brush and better yet, I sure hope it fits.

FYI, when I was a MSF Instructer I was assigned that as an additional duty while in the Corps. I was responsible for teaching the course to any Marine that wanted to operate his bike on the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Ca. I taught those MCF courses from 1993 though 1996 when I retired. Any Marine with intentions to ride their bike while on active duty had to complete this course, period. I and two other instructors (but I was senior) taught the course in a Marine Corps classroom and reported directly to the Commanding General. The classes were only provided on Saturdays and if the course was not completed successfully, the failing student (Marine) was banned from operating his m/c period; on or off base. That was the regs at the time. Don't know what they are now. Classes were taught from a Marine Corps Institute lesson plan and the skills tests was established by the MCF. The course had to be taught in less than 6 hours. So, there was no time for joking around or civilian type grabass. JFYI. -
Anti Dive elctrical disconnects
MasterGuns replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
After reading all this, I immediately disconnected both AD on my 86. Now at a light, especially a long light, I do not see nearly as much a drop in the volt meter. Rides the same, stops the same as before. Thanks for all the info. -
I retired from my last job the last day of last month (June 2013). This was my second retirement; the first being from the Marine Corps after 30 years continuous active duty. So now I have to find a way to live on my military retirement, VA disability and Social Security. Wow, what a life !!! Just got all my and my families health, dental and vision insurance started. Tricare; my retired military health coverage, cost me only $44 a month for all of us. Now all I got to figure out is "WHAT TO DO".
