  1. Nuttin' you can always take a ride over to Odessa or even Monahans. Two more great West Texas towns; ahhhhh, places rather.
  2. What kind/type of exhaust clamps did you use on the two rear cylinders? Did you use the OEM clamps? I tried the OEM clamps on the rear cylinders but they have a much larger ID than what is really needed. Regular automotive exhaust clamps are just too bulky to fit in the confined space they must, so they are out as well. I have installed this Marks collector several times (on, off, on, off, on off) in the last three days and just quite seem to do so without an exhaust leak from one of the rear cylinders cause I just can't clamp those two cylinders down sufficiently. The usual OEM clamps don't work on the front two pipes either because their ID is also larger than the ID of the marks front pipes. Currently it is "not installed" but I am willing to try anything. Just need some guidance.
  3. the install of a Marks collector also with Jardine slipons. It arrived yesterday and I have her buffed out fairly well; just picked up the new exhaust gaskets from Stadium Yamaha in Irving. Have to stop by the Harley dealer on the way home to pick up some nice chrome exhaust clamps since the connections will now be visible. Hope everything lines up well. I will let everyone know how things go when this job is complete.
  4. Good morning Daniel. Hope you are fully up and about and back to work much sooner than you or the docs anticipate. I've never met ya but know what recovering from severe injuries is like. Wanted to help Take care. PP sent. Herb
  5. Don't we have something better to do?
  6. Sounds to me like your problem could be the starter clutch. Did you start using full synthetic after the Marks collector and new pipes were installed? I have had three lst editions in the last 6 years and they have all had over 30000 miles on them. I am a real believer in sythetic oil and shortly after changing to synthetic, the first issue I encountered everytime was the starter clutch wouldn't catch/engage. It would just spin and once in awhile, clutch, grind and make some really interesting sounds. Replaced them with new starter clutches and the problem was solved.
  7. Gary, Being that I am pullin the 86 apart for the Marks collector install, I thought I go ahead and sync the carbs "again". So, with all the plastic off, before I started with the exhaust I did just that. What I found that if properly synced at idle, the vacuum pull remains pretty darn close to being even all the way up to 5000. Of course, the bike is not under load. I also installed a "tee" in the #2 vacuum line so the vacuum sensor could affect whatever and however it was going to effect the process and it made no difference. At 4000 rpm the four carbs are darn near even. But in the process of the rpms increasing from idle to 4000 is another story. But I am satisfied with the way this 86 reads. Before I did all this, I used starting fluid to check for leaks and there were none at all. Also changed the plugs and the colors on all four is just right. Now all I need is the marks collector to arrive. Think I'll also reinstall the Jardines with the Marks collecter and wear earplugs.
  8. Just heard back from Mark. He'll have my collector to me in about two weeks. Can't wait to install that puppy and find how she performs afterwards. I think I'll reinstall the Jardines, too. It'll probably be louder than my hog.
  9. Thanks for the reply. But the more I think about this issue, the more I am convincing myself that the more an engine wears, relative to compression, even the slightest difference between cylinders, compression wise anyway, has a direct effect on the amount of fuel in. Cylinders with higher compression mean more exhaust being discharged from that cylinder. More out means more in, thus the difference readings on the Carbtune at higher rpms. Is this a possible explanation or am I out in left field somewhere.
  10. Guess I'll stop worrying bout this.
  11. When I had an almost brand new 86 back in the day, she was pretty much balanced (synced) even at higher rpms. But I did like your answer. Still chucklin.
  12. When syncing the carbs on my 86 lst Ed, I can get all four carbs to be perfectly level at about 24 bars onmy Carbtune but at higher rpms, up around 3500 or 4000 or so, they are no longer anywhere being level. I have no vacuum leaks. Even when riding at 65/70 mph it feels like they aren't balanced. I hook up the Carbtune and at idle they are still perfect. Run the r's up while sitting there and same result.......not balanced at higher rpms. Otherthan than this, it seems to runs strong. Compression on all cylinders is about even 165 to 175. Just would like some comments regarding if this sort of thing is normal. I do have a second set of "just gone through" carbs and may try mounting those to see what happens. But that is a lot of work just to see "what happens". Thanks
  13. Just emailed Mark asking him to build me one. Hope he can and get right to it. Would like to get it installed before BB.
  14. A battery charger is just that; an electrical unit for charging a dead or almost dead battery. Once it is fully charged it must be disconnected. A tender is a smaller, probably a 1.5 volt "maintainer". It can remain connected to the battery for prolonged periods of times and never be disconnected. At least not until you decide to take a ride. A tender simply maintains a charged battery that will set for long periods of time without being charged by a charger or the bike's charging system. At least this is the way I'd explain the difference Herb
  15. I need only one Thanks Herb
  16. Count me in for one, also.
  17. An M1 Abrams outta do the trick.:rotf:
  18. I've used 20/50 since 1982. Here in North Texas and everywhere else, including Japan. Hey Gary, BTW, do you still have that extra rear master cylinder and would you be willing to part with it. Someone else is in need.
  19. All the oil threads/posts was taking up 95% of the server space.....must have been deleted. :rotf:
  20. Nope; the horn covers sold by JCW are too large to "snap" over the OEM 1st Edition horns. How do I know? But thanks anyway.
  21. Yes but one was lost sometimes in November. Do you have one or both? If so, PM me your cost.
  22. Our next anniversary will be our 35th. Couldn't have found a better woman so I need not worry about the contents of this thread.
  23. Nope, I've already lost it. Nope, I've already lost it.
  24. 110 miles round trip 2012 Maxima averaging 23.4 mpg = 4.70 gpd @ 3.80 per gal = $17.86 per day or 89.13 a week A year has 52 weeks. I take about 2 weeks off so that leaves 50 weeks. That's about $4465 annually for my gas. Plus my wife fills up every other Saturday for about $55.00. She works 49 weeks a year so that almost 3000.00 Plus my daughters drive to college (that I'm funding). She uses about $40.00 every other week. But she only attends school three days weekly. So that's another fuel cost between 800 and a 1000 dollars. Total annual fuel cost (not counting the two motorcycles) is $8465.00 No wonder I'm broke. No wonder I'm broke.
