TCI Removal
MasterGuns replied to ChurchBuilder's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
About one month ago, I used a 1/4" drive ratchet with several long extensions, a 1/4" socket and an appropriate phillips head adapter placed in the socket. I held the phillips in place with one hand and with using the other managed to remove both fasteners holding it on. It was quick and pretty fuss free. My VR is an 86 and that was the first time the TCI was removed. I've read horror stories on this website about how difficult others have had getting it out; maybe I was just lucky. -
What's he going to wear now???? Couldn't resist!

I wonder what an insurance company would have to say if someone were in a accident and they discovered the bike had a car tire installed. I bet my money they'd claim an "unauthorized modification" and deny coverage. Just sayin...

Scary new problem
MasterGuns replied to goatman123's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had the same problem on the first motor that was in this 86 I ride. I have since then replaced the original motor with an 89. But, like I said I had this identical issue with the same lower bolt on #2 manifold....vacuum leak and a stripped out manifold bolt. I was able to solve the problem by installing another bolt about 3/8 to an 1/2 inch longer than the orginal bolt. First thing I did when considering this as an option was to measure the depth of the hole tapped into the side of the head. To my surprise it was a lot deeper than the original bolt length. So all I did was run a tap down to that depth just to make sure the threads were straight and installed the longer bolt. Was able to tighten it up enough. Worked out for me and no more vacuum leak either. The original motor developed a wrist pin knock after running the bike to Dog Patch Arkansas over 90 mph for a prolonged period of time....trying to dodge thunderstorms.. Rather than address the wrist pin issue, I just installed another complete motor. Just my experience. -
Congratulations on the new scooter. I know you'll love your HD. And don't worry bout those that will ridicule you for what your ride is, they're everywhere. I get bashed all the time.... and you know the ole sayin.

Funeral Escort Killed
MasterGuns replied to Yama Mama's topic in Inspirational, Motivational, Prayer Requests, Etc.
I'm sure I speak for a good number of us but at least I for sure, am starting to feel very, very much like a "target" when I'm on my bike. This is just more very sad news about a fellow biker. My prayers are for this gentleman and his family too. He is just someone I'm now adding to the list I ask God to either for either timely and complete recovery or ask Him to bless the fallen and their loved ones. I am really having second thoughts about riding anymore. I still have a young lady who is the sole beneficiary of my working as I am paying her way through college so she needs me to be around. "God please continue to protect us all while riding", is how I close my prayers these days; use not to be. Ponch heal up brother and I hope to continue hearing more good news. That is still burned into my brain, sorry. -
Joe (if that's how people normally address you), I have had bikes all my life and more than just a few have been Harleys. I currently own an 01 Ultra and ride it regularly. Yes it has it's draw backs, the most significant being air cooled but in my opinion that is really the only one. And it being air cooled isn't a big deal to me; most of the time. If riding in over 100 degree weather in stop and go traffic, yeah, I'd rather be on my water cooler 86 VR but to be quite honest, it too can put off excessive heat around your lower extremities which can also get fairly uncomfortable. So basically, to me anyway, it's not so much the bike, it's a weather related issue and not a bike issue. In cool weather the HD can be idling in stop and go stuff here in the Dallas Ft Worth God-awful traffic and I don't have a problem at all and I'm 62 years young. But to go on with the good features of even a 10 year old Ultra. First it is fuel injected and runs strong regardless of altitude. Regardless of whether it is extremely hot of cool, it produces the same amount of torgue. I can pass in 5th gear almost at any speed in which you'd be cruising at in 5th. Heck, even at 60 mph, if I need to pass on the Yamaha, to ensure I get around whatever I'm passing safely, I downshift to 4th just to ensure the bike is in it's power band. The HD is always in it's power band. Yeah, it is not as "fast" as the Yamaha, lst or 2d Edition, but accelleration is that important to me, not always anyway. If I need to go fast, yes, I'll take my lst Edition out and have yet to be blown off by a 2d Edition and my Yammy is now 25 years old; go figure. The HD feels lighter and more nimble; to me anyways, yet it weighs more than my lst edition. Taking her through the twisties is really fun and it's handling through curves is quite surprising; I drag the floor boards all the time....try to avoid that but......! There is tremendiously more aftermarket stuff for the HD than there ever will be for any Yamaha. Even at 10 years old, the HD is simply a beautiful machine and with the Vance and Hines true duel exhaust, the sound is awesome. I could go on and on. Don't get me wrong, I am not bashing Yamaha, I really am attached to both of these machines and they are both outstanding bikes. I guess that is why I have one of each and yes, I consider myself lucky. Oh yes, the HD is a much, much more confortable machine fitting me perfectly. And regardless of what you read it is smoother than my 1st Edition four banger or any 2d Edition I've ever riden; just not at idle. But I kinda like that shakin at idle. One more draw back concerning this 10 year old HD Ultra, I wish it had ABS; as it is too easy to lock up the rear. One last item, the sound system is just as good as the sound system in my new 2011 Maxima; it will knock your socks off. Hope this helps.

Need Prayers for Ponch!!!
MasterGuns replied to Sweetnothing's topic in Inspirational, Motivational, Prayer Requests, Etc.
OMG I am shocked. I didn't see this thread until just now. God be with David and his family. My and my entire family are remembering them in our prayers. Trust in God and as someone else stated, there is power in numbers. Brad, if there is anything I can do please let me know. You guys aren't that far. -
Ditto, I check my shock air once in a blue moorn and the air pressure is the same even after the entire riding season. Anything less indicates a leak.

We have cracks so wide and deep here in Aledo, that my Chihuahua trying to jump across one, fell down into one and is gone baby gone. It's drier than a popcorn fart in these parts.

vacuum leak
MasterGuns replied to goatman123's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Had the same problem with my former 86 motor. After I learned the PO had the carbs off more than a few times, I went through the same process as you; spraying ether and wd 40 around the maniford boots. I had one boot that increased the rpms significantly. Tore it apart and turned out my problem was a stripped maniford/boot bolt. I used a longer bolt and that seemed to eliminate my problem for a while. I ended up replacing the entire motor for that reason and one other. The motor after a long hard run of over 1500 miles, developed a knock which I think was a wrist pin. But with the new motor (89) all is well, no stripped bolt holes and no more knocking. Good luck. -
Sounds to me like you've got old, too old, brake fluid in the system. I think all you may have to do is replace the fluid; all of it. When brake fluid is past it's life expectancy it absorbs air. When the fluid gets hot, as in long hard rides through the twisties, it creates a lot of slop/free play in the lever and the clutch isn't releasing entirely. This might be causing your hard shifting. How old is the brake fluid? When was the last time you changed it? What is it's appearance? I don'k know if anyone else recommended this cause I didn't read through them all. I personnally doubt it's your slave cylinder, lever, mastercylinder or anything else. Just nasty old fluid.

Here I lay in a hospital bed waiting for surgery
MasterGuns replied to dingy's topic in Watering Hole
Good luck with the surgery and the recovery. You're in good hands so do worry. Just take it easy and no wheelies when you get home. -
An excellent report and honest. Hope it puts some the Harley bashing to rest.

I used a fairly small artist brush to fill in the depressions. While the paint was still wet, I simply wiped away the excess using q-tips. Whatever process you use to wipe away the excess paint you want to do so before the paint dries. Just have to have steady hand and be patient. Mine were in humble shape but now look great. Dont use sand paper regardless of the grit cause all you end up doing is ruining the black finish.

Hey great idea. Disconnect two plugs then remove one of the slipons and there you have it. A really tinny sounding twin.
-
Stop wasting your time. You can change your slipons to any other exhaust imaginable but you will never, repeat, never get a 1300 four cylinder to sound anything like even an 883 twin, let alone a 80, 88, 96, 103 or 110 cubic inch twin. I tried everything under the sun and only got things louder but still very tinny sounding, sorta like a Vespa on steroids or a bored out Puch on nitromethane. Leave it stock gents.

Carbs or Electrical?
MasterGuns replied to rjg1985's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Have you checked the vacuum boost sensor? Sounds like it could not be holding a vacuum and therefore not advancing the timing AT ALL. -
Was headin home from work Friday in my '10 Nissan Altima SR, the fast one with the 270 HP V-6 when a "new to Texas" uninsured woman from elsewhere, rearended me. Damages to the rear are substantial and the front of my car is not quite as bad, but probably totalled; don't know for sure yet. Glad I had uninsured motorist coverage. Was taken to a local hospital for lower back injuries as well a seriously bruised chest and neck. I'll be fine in a couple weeks. Glad I wasn't on one of my scooters. If totalled, I am going to replace the Nissan with a Camaro. So there is good in everything.

Which vendor for a stator??
MasterGuns replied to reddevilmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, I bought a "rebuilt" stator on ebay in 2007, installed in an 83 I sold my brother-in-law. He's put over 22 k on the bike since and the stator is still as good as it was when I put it in.
