Anti Dive elctrical disconnects
MasterGuns replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sure would be great info if someone could do just that....measure the electrical draw of the two front anti-dive units. I've heard they do draw a large amount of juice. So much that sitting at a very long light or being in really slow stop and go traffice can quickly become an concern. As soon as someone can post the draw, and if it is more than just a little, I will also be disconnecting mine. I do have Progressives and think the bike should be just fine without the ADs. -
elusive oil leak
MasterGuns replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The usual suspect is the rubber insert that your stator wires run though. If that piece isn't completely free of all oil and sealed properly into it's recession in the case, it'll leak really badly. If it were the crush washer, you'd be able to tell just by looking at it. My bet is the stator wire rubber grommet. -
95% of all Harleys ever built are still on the road today...
MasterGuns replied to WCody's topic in Jokes and Humor
I'd walk out and ask for a refund cause when I was a MSF instructor, I/we didn't waste time on jokes. -
One of the best human beings I have ever met. Kind, honest, and humble. Don, you are in better hands now.

I heard this joke right after buying my first Harley back in 1976. Get original will ya! -
Are we being gouged? And lets not make this political...
MasterGuns replied to 1BigDog's topic in Watering Hole
Last year to combat the high fuel prices, I replaced my 93 Octane required Maxima with a Toyota Prius. I am now getting twice the mileage and on regular 87 octane. If needed I still have my Toyota pickup. And if needed as well, I still have my old but very, very low mile motorhome; which I may use only once a year or so. Now to further combat the cost of fuel, my last day for a 55 mile one way commute to work will be 28 June; I resigned. I won't be driving anywhere except maybe to the local Home Depot or on short runs to go buy grub for the family. Lawnmower doesn't use a lot of fuel either. Ha Ha. To hell with em all. And yes, we are all be gouged by the gas companies with the consent of our government. How do you not conclude that is political? -
$3000.00! Want some pix? Comes with most VL accessories, including a Zumo 550 and your cable. No damage. No broken plastic tabs, driving lights on VL mounts. Has an 89 motor that runs great. After market pipes but if you want, I can change them out and put the OEM with dual down turn extentions back on. Tires 50%. Your choice of seats; stock, Travelcade or Corbin. Engine has about 40K on it. Even has chrome clutch and brake levers. I know 3000 is a little high but this bike is exceptional.

It applies to either one.

Well, I have submitted my resignation at work last day will be June 30th.. Just sick of the place. So I will become a triple dipper while the triple dipping is still good. Anyway, the boss, the one at home (to hell with my old one here at work), has read me the riot act telling me one of the bikes has got to go. Besides all I've done with the 86 is keep her cleaned up and started every weekend. Everytime I head to the garage to go ridin, something always lures me to the FJR. So my great looking, great running 1st Edition just sits there. Anyway, I promised my wife I'd let IT go. Will be posting some pix later on this week. BUT, if there is anyone interested now, let me know and I'll see what I can come up with. Sadly Masterguns

Exhaust Chirp
MasterGuns replied to Donvito's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My guess would be too rich. Mine was doing the same thing and someone on here recommended starting off with a 1/8 lean turn (CCW) on each of the fuel mixture screws. Made short order of the problem or burping sound. Reminded me of a Sergeant Major I once knew after he had a few too many. -
I tried several times to comment regarding this post and just couldn't bring my self to type out the words of times past and what this day; as well as all the other days, means to me. There are thoughts that have been in my mind for 43 years now and that will be on my mind the day I die. I can say I truly do honor those I served with and that were lost in Viet Nam. Semper Fi Herb

Gary, Thanks for asking. First, I and my family are all ok; just a little lighter from having the crap scared out of us last night. The tonadoe breakout wasn't very far from my place; maybe 8 or 10 miles as the crow flies. The winds were really bad and I do have some tree damage. Took off work yesterday through tomorrow with plans to ride down to Temple to participate in the BBG 2000 that started this morning but am staying home because the chances of a repeat are pretty good for this evening. I have an underground storm shelter so as long as we are in that thing we could survive an F5. But no room for my scooters, just we three and the dogs .....damn. Herb

Crankcase Vent Tube
MasterGuns replied to Peder_y2k's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pete, We old timers remember when a metal pipe vent about 1" in ID; was the factory method of removing harmful (corrosive and atmosphere contaminants) vapors that build up inside crankcases. This pipe, for a lack of a better description ran from the top of the motor (block or valve cover) to a location under the motor and low enough to have air flow past the bottom. The bottom of the vent was cut at about a 45 degree angle with the lower point being towards the front of the automobile. As air rushed by the vent a vacuum was created at the bottom opening sucking the vapors out of the crankcase. I think you could google early 50 or 60 crankcase ventilation systems to find an illustration. All internal combustion engines need some kind of a system to vent the crankcase. It was air emission requirements that made the early systems illegal and the industry had to develop systems that routed crankcase vapors thru the combustion chambers to burn them. But the early systems worked really well. -
Crankcase Vent Tube
MasterGuns replied to Peder_y2k's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I like your arrangement and if cut at an appropriate angle where it vents underneath, and it has air moving past the cut, you then have positive crankcase ventilation. That is why you get an occassional drip underneath. Unlike the other mods so far on this thread, yours works and theirs does not. But I think yours would be much more attractive it you were to use black hose. -
I'm surprised they aren't manufactured with an 8 track.

You got that backwards.

Dave, I bought my daughter a 2003 Tribute in 04 with the same power train as the 01 you are considering. When purchased as a one year old vehicle it had about 25k on the clock. It now has 143K miles and runs like a top; get about 23 mph and has plenty of get up and go for a V-6. It doesn't use a drop of oil, shifts great, doesn't rattle at all. Id does have a fairly stiff ride though even with new shocks and struts installed about a year ago. She loves it and turned down an 07 Corolla to keep the Tribute.

Gene, I have an almost new Clearview windshield with center vent fitment for any lst Gen and I am willing to let it go. I prefer the stock oem shield. This was a special order from Clearview; cost over 300.00 which you can verify on their website. Almost brand spanking new and Ill let it go for far less. PM me if interested.

I have had numerous Harley's over the years. So you ain't talking to someone that hasn't walked the walk. Just got rid of an Ultra not too long ago. Everything said here is in fun I hope. Had a 110 try keeping up the other day. I need one of those tee shirts with a big grin on the back.

Not a V4 but dont take on any FJR's with a halffast rider on em. Any of em will surprise that HD.

Over the Presidents Day weekend, I successfully completed my first "for the record" IBA SS1000. Running on I10 in West Texas, I was crusing at about 92mph on my FJR when I came up of a small group of 2d editions (couldn't tell what years as they all look alike) running the speed limit; 80 mph. So, I just hung behind them for awhile since I was way ahead of my schedule. In a little while some sort of a Honda "scooter" ran up beside me and was signaling a question asking me what channel I had my cb on. I hand signaled back to him "25". I could see he had a JM CB mounted. He moved to 25 and asked me why we was running so slow. I told him I was not with the others and was running a SS1000. I saw him twist the throttle and soon shot past me and all the 2d editions. A couple must had been embarrassed being passed and increased their speed. I kicked the FJR down a gear and blew by the entire lot watching them disappear in the dust. Caught up with the same scooter guy in Fort Stockton while refueling and OMG; it was a 600cc Honda scooter.

something has failed miserably

Alex, When you say that you got a boost from someone; what did they use to give you a boost? Was it an automobile? I am beginning you may have two problems one before the boost and either another issue made worse by the boost. Not to alarm you but when I had my last Harley and hadnt ridden it for some time, it had a almost completed dead battery when I finally one day decided to start it. Keep in mind that this HD I am talking about had a 45 amp charging system. Your 86 has only a 28 amp charging system. Anyway, I had company and left for a few minutes to assist my wife with starting a lawnmower, and my buddy used some jumpers from my Toyota Tacoma to the HD. I took about 1 second for the high voltage to fry both the stator and rectifier. My buddy paid for the repairs too. About 500.00. So where I'm going is perhaps you did have a r/r failure causing the high voltage and when you connected the boost from whatever you may have fried that 27 year old TCI. Just thinkin out loud.
