He's probably too old for a FJR; like me but I still ride a FJR because I still have a really great grip for hangin on under WOT. And no comparison to any Harley. It is strictly a sport tourer.

In all honesty, J'Ville is a military town......close the base and the town would dry up a blow away. J'ville is the home of huge Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, home of the Second Marine Division. The air station is one of the Corps smallest. It's name is Marine Corps Air Station, New River. Not sure if the small annex between the two is still there (Camp Geiger); it was when I was in. Ask me how I know all this stuff.

Questions about heated grips
MasterGuns replied to DANG's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
How is heated grips going help with your passenger's cold hands? Just a thought. I have a pair of light weigh heated gloves and the FJR has heated grips. Did a SS1000 in sub freezing weather last February and the heated grips did exactly that; kept my grip (or the palms of my hand warm. Did nothing for the other side of my hands. Stopped put on and plugged in my heated gloves and was warm and toasty. If by chance my passenger wants to warm her hands, she can plug in her heated gloves back there and her hands are warm as well. Tried having her reach around me but she cant steer worth a S#$+. I have power lets on all three my bikes but only the FJR has the heated grips and they draw 9 amps; two pair of gloves....6 amps. -
Questions about heated grips
MasterGuns replied to DANG's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Heated grips are juice hogs. I recommend you get two pair of heated gloves. Only draw about 3 amps per pair and keep your hands much warmer than grips? -
Yep. How'd you get a pic of my ex anyway?

1) A 2013 manufactured with carbuetors and a cassette is not by any stretch of the imagination modern. I recently sold a 2001 HD that was fuel injected and had other features Yamahas still don't have. 2) I have an 86 and a 92 lst edition and neither have any rust and are just as reliable as a 2d gen. Reading this forum, there is nothing special about 2d gen issues, the forum if full of em. 3) When I sold my 2001 Harley, I used the money to buy a new 2011 FJR. HD do hold their value more than any Yamaha. Just saying.

I've been using Pledge on the Cee Bailey I have on my FJR ever since it was new. No harm done in 17 months.

MPG - lst Gen
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yeah; know what ya mean. I have a Prius that gets 50 mpg and thats running the a/c and that crushes the mpg of any of my bikes. So much for a bike being more economical; that is unless you ride something other than a lst gen. Used to have a Harley that got a little more than 50 if I was taking it easy but I never just take it easy. One other point I'd like to add....I've had three brand spanking new lst Gens, an 86, an 88 and a 91 and none of them got the mileage some here claim they get. Just saying. -
Is 37 mpg unreasonable when running 75 - 80 mph (and sometimes a little beyond)? This is one up with full bags, trunk and other stuff bunjied on. This is the mileage I get with both my 89 (an 86 with an 89 motor) and now my 92. I know I'd get better running a steady 60 but you just can run that slow here in N. Texas on any interstate; you'd get run over.

In harm's way

tell your young Marine Semper Fi from an old retired Marine E-9. What is your son's MOS? Is he a 0311? With respect Masterguns -
That is soooo correct. As Nancy Pelosi (stretch) put it, Obamacare must be passed before we and the morons that passed it knew what was in it. And we pay these politicians big bucks. My God was a farce. Now you can delete this post.

Thanks 93 Venture; you may be right. So, when I tear it apart to replace the thermostat since I will have already drained the system, I have a new impeller and a good complete water pump. May as well do em all at the same time. But I am about to take it out since drilling the EPA plugs and moving the needles out from a ridiculous factory setting 21 years ago of 1/2 turn out to 2 1/2 turns out and if runs any better I may just leave it all as is.

Yep, the fan cycles on and off as it should. But now that I found the carbs air fuel mixture screws each less than a full turn out, I can't wait to ride it tomorrow to find out if anything changed. I did put about 7 miles on it after straightening out the carbs and to my surprise it didn't boil at all. So, we'll just have to wait and see tomorrow. I did order the parts listed in my last post so if it still runs to hot tomorrow, I'll just park it until the parts arrive. TTYL

This 92 has been a real challenge figuring out why it runs much hotter than my 86. The 86 has an 89 motor so I am comparing an 89 in really good condition in all respects including the temp at which it runs with a 92 that is also in great condition yet runs noticeably hotter; not only as idicated by the temp guage but by the feel of the heat on my legs as I move down the highway at 70. This morning I ordered a new rad cap, thermostat and all the o-rings and gaskets and was planning to put them all in to see if that made a difference. Then I read Tacoma Pete's response to why his scooter gets 47 mpg. He stated it was bone stock and he could determine how well it was running by holding his hand up to the exhaust. Well, after a few minutes I headed back out to the garage and lined up the 86 and the 92 side by side and started em both. After they were very warmed up, about 20 minutes and the rad fans were both cycling on and off, I held my hand up to each bikes exhaust, my left hand on the 86 and my right on the 92. Then I switched hands because at my age I never know if what I am feeling is correct. The 92 was very noticeable warmer, almost hot on my hand I held up to its exhaust. I could not hold my hand there for more than 10 or 15 seconds. Ah huh, possibly carb issue. So, I had already synced the carbs twice since bringing it home, however I was unable to adjust the air fuel mixture screws because the brass plugs were still there. So I commenced to drilling them out. What I found was weird; two carbs were only set 1/2 turn out and the other two were about 3/4 turn out. Now then; I don't know if this would have any impact on engine temp but it sure did lower the temp of the exhaust after moving them out 2 1/2 turns; permitting more fuel at idle and up through the entire range that the idle circuit impacts. I have read that its way above idle just cant remember how far up the rpm range. The exhaust on the 92 is now about the same as the 86. I don't know if anyone has ever run into this sort of thing but I just did. Can't wait to ride the doggone thing to see if it operates cooler; engine temp wise. Thought I'd post my findings. Still can't believe a 20 year old bike still with the tamper proof brass plugs but even more surprised at the 1/2 - 3/4 factory setting. What this means is this bike has never run right. Interesting. I would truly appreciate anyone's comments regarding the above issue and whether or not they feel the set screws could have any impact at all on operating temperature. Herb

OK; I've had this 92 for about a month now and have performed a lot of stuff in the short time I have had it. Great looking bike so I really don't mind spending the time and money; but one thing has really got me baffled. One of the items I changed was the coolant. Drained it all out and added new coolant to the radiator and "burped" it as Squidley put it. The radiator was plum full after running it for a while with the drain cock to the "off" position at two o'clock. Here is one confusing item... Dingy indicated to another member that the off or run position was a five o'clock. But if I turn the plastic indicator and wait until I hear/feel it click into position, it is at two o'clock. So that is where I've had it since changing the coolant. My problem is that it runs very low in the green but as soon as I leave the interstate and head home (which is about 1 mile from the interstate) the temp guage starts to climb. By time I arrive at home and into my garage it is about 3/4th of the way up the green. When I kill the bike I can hear the coolant boiling up into the overflow bottle. The first couple time it did that, the overflow tube released a puddle of coolant about the size of page of typing paper. Before I left this evening I checked the level in the bottle and it was at the full mark and the motor was bone cold. My 86 has never done this. I thought it just had air in the system the first time or two it did that but nothing is improving. However, tonight it did not pee on the garage floor was just bubbling away. This worries me. What is going on with this thing? I want to take it to Oklahoma and Arkansas but I guess I can't until this is resolved. Will have to take the older gal when I go. Any suggestions will be most welcome. Thanks Herb

I have had this new to me 92 for about a month now and am still going through it entirely. Today was for checking all the TCI connections to ensure they are all clean and connecting properly. To my surprise once I removed the battery and its holder and air cleaner, exposing the TCI, rather than the connectors being connected with a male/female holder, the harness connection is just pushed into the TCI. There is no clip that locks in either of the connectors. This simply cannot be right. What am I missing here? Shouldn't there be some sort of a locking device that ensures the connector is attached firmly? There is nothing in any parts list that I can see. Help please.

Just replaced all four spark plug caps on the 92 VR. Main reason is that what the PO had his mechanic install are not NGK. As a matter of fact the caps don't even have a name on them other than what I suspect is the part number. 2 and 3 has TD T-139, 1 and 4 has TD T-131. Does anyone know who made these spark plug caps and if so, are these also 5000 ohm like the OEM caps are suppose to be? Just would like to know. Oh yeah, they also say "Made is Japan" (like everything else). Are these Nippondenso or another brand? I'd like to think I did good replacing them with the correct caps. Also cut each plug wire back about 1/4 inch.

Tryin to find a special part
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for the offer but I didn't lose the bracket. I bought another VR and had a set of good chrome covers; was just short the bracket and spacers. But I am good to go now. Thanks -
Tryin to find a special part
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gary, Thanks so much but I have already fabricated a bracket from 1 1/4 " angle iron just as "Tacoma Pete" suggested. All done. Thanks for the offer though. Still looking for a good TCI for the 92 though. As you said there are plenty of them for VMax's on ebay. But one quick question...was there any difference between the TCI for a 92 VR and a 92 VMax? Almost an identical part number; rather than JJ the VMax is JP but that's it. Just curious. Herb -
Sounds to me like loose head bearings or a loose stem nut or both. While sitting on the bike with the front brake held tightly; with your on strength, try rocking the bike forward and backward all the time while watching the steering head. If it moves at all or you hear the same noise, what I said above may be your problem.
