  1. When you were working the shifter back and forth and not moving there was a good chance that it wasn't actually shifting through all the gears. I have found that it shifts smoother if you have a little pressure on the shifter before you clutch and shift.
  2. I have never had an abnormal noise from mine.
  3. My original battery in my Venture lasted 5 years. My original batteries in my GMs seem to last about 3 years and then I put the biggest batteries from Walmart that I can fit in. They seem to last about 7 years.
  4. I usually check in the morning before work and then again when I get home. I even checked in while at the Hub for the International rally.
  5. A friend has a 2 year old John Deere L140 for sale. It has a snow blade and chains with it. When he told me about it I was really wanting it but I decided I had better research it first. It has a Briggs 23 horse 2 cylinder motor. When I started looking for reviews on the web all I found were complaints. But then somebody looking at this forum might think the Venture was a terrible motorcycle when it is not. Who has personal experience with this tractor and what do you think. How old and how many hours?
  6. The rest of the world has small diesel powered cars that out perform any hybrid but our government won't let them in here. If the price was competitive I would have one of the diesel KLRs but they are going to run a lot more than I want to pay. I looked at one of them at Aerostichs VBR rally last year.
  7. I took my daughters car to get it inspected a few years ago. The young man( teen ager) assigned to take the wheel off was a friend of my sons. I watched through a window as he used the wrong socket and rounded off the lug nut and didn't manage to get it off. I watched as he did the right thing and got his boss (owner) and showed him what he had done. The boss moved him to the other side of the car and showed him the right socket. They never said a thing to me. Now I have a pretty bad temper but as I have gotten older I have realized that if I never get started I am able to keep it under control so I just kept my mouth shut. It helped that I knew that I would be able to fix it. It wasn't long they were out of business and I would like to think that here in this small town that I helped with that. There have been several exposes on tv about places like Jiffy Lube doing crooked stuff. especially out on the west coast. I started working on my own stuff because that was the way I was raised and it was what I could afford. Now I can afford a shop but don't want to let anybody else touch my stuff. My friends that take their stuff to the pros seem to have more problems than I do.
  8. The bike magazines just make you want to buy a new bike. The only one I still subscribe to is Rider and they have a prejudice for European bikes and ride reports from the west coast.
  9. I have them in my Trans Am,Sunfire and truck. If I had it to do over again I would go with stock. Can't really tell any difference on gas mileage. Of course about the time I was installing them they went to 10% alcohol in the gas.
  10. I grew up in house full of big dogs. If one of them tore up something it was us kids fault because we got the dog excited. I am not a dog fan but because I grew up with them I understand them. If I am out jogging and one comes after me I can tell if they are friendly and just want petted or if they will bite me in the ass if I turn my back. Anyway I was hurrying home one night after work.We were going through some kid problems and I was worried my wife was going to have a nervous breakdown. I saw a medium sized dog walking towards the edge of the road. I could tell it was one of the friendly ones. Doing about 65. I started honking and slowing down. It kept on walking. I went completely over into the other lane. Just before I got there it took off running and came right into my path. I was still going pretty fast and dead centered it. Traffic was real heavy and with a bike this big I was pretty sure it was dead. I felt bad but I kept on going. Rural area outside a city. No houses right there. It still bothers me.
  11. Beautiful area to ride a motorcycle though.
  12. I rode 80 miles on the Dual Sport Friday and my wife and I rode the Venture 140 miles Saturday.
  13. Somebody said that you can't really judge a bike until you have ridden it quite a bit and that is true of the Venture. I didn't really feel comfortable on mine until I did 3500 miles in 5 days the first summer I had it. Now with 76000 miles on it it feels like a much smaller bike. I have used several different tires and like the Avons and Elite 3s the best.
  14. They were talking about the lack of weather protection. As long as it isn't raining so hard that I have to slow down a lot it actually works pretty good. On cold mornings I am warmer once I am on the highway than at slower speeds around town. It handles well in sweepers but what they say about mid corner bumps like you see in a lot of 15 mph corners is true.
  15. Here is some more.
  16. If I can get this to attach maybe it will help.I guessed at the year. This is for a 2004 2 wheel drive. Those systems are usually kind of generic.
  17. The odds are that all four carbs are going to have to be taken apart and cleaned. If you have to pay somebody to do that it will be several hundred dollars.
  18. I have a factory Yamaha cover that was expensive and is very good. You can see through it and yet it repels water. Water vapor can escape but water drops can't make it in. I'm just not very good about using it when there is a chance of rain and I park it at work any more. When it was new I was religious about it but the older it gets and the more miles on it the less I care.
  19. 2002 Midnight 77000 miles
  20. I turned mine on for the first time and the bulbs came on and one burned out within 10 seconds. I replaced it and have been running with the same bulbs for 5 years.
  21. I put about 10000 miles on it every year but it isn't my only bike.
  22. Paypal sent. She is a genuine hero.
  23. It has been a while since I had it done but I definitely thought they were reasonable. I just looked for my receipt but could not find it. There is always a possibility that I am not remembering it right. Got me curious now.
  24. Those metal boxes come in handy when they drop them. They tend to be ridden in a lot rougher places than Ventures are. When I went to the Aerostich VBR rally last year probably 70 % of the bikes were BMW Adventure bikes and 20 % were KLRs. The area where we were camping was very rough and I probably saw 6 bikes over on their sides the first 3 hours I was there.
  25. Dale, I know it would be a ways for you to go but a shop in Tipton,Mo checked mine for around 180.00. They didn't have the shims but were prepared to get them after they checked. Turned out I had one just barely out on the loose side and since they generally tighten up and on the loose side isn't hard on the bike we decided just to put it back together. It wouldn't have cost much more if they had adjusted them since most of the work is getting to where you can access them. The shop is Ghetto Cycle Sales. They specialize in hopping up Hayabusas.
