Its Hot Outside But I Need Help for When Its Cold
midnightventure replied to NCReb's topic in Watering Hole
Disconnect or put a switch in the carb heaters. Makes a lot more wattage available for charging. -
Mine did it when it was brand new. Quit after I synched the carbs. I hate to say it but I was going down a mountain in Colorado. Two big black SUVs had passed me. They had pulled over and a bunch of guys in suits were lined up taking a leak. Looked like a bunch of Federales of some kind. I chopped the throttle knowing that at that altitude it was going to backfire. Didn't really get to see their reaction. One of those things you do without thinking. Still think it was funny though.

At 100000 miles the Yamahas should have had the valves adjusted 3 times which would probably cost about the same as any work that had to be done on the Harley.

clutch friction zone
midnightventure replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I replaced my clutch spring with one of the heavy duty PCW springs. Doing that decreased the distance from the handlebar for the clutch to start engaging. -
Very nice. The bike too.

I have trailered too. Its only been recently that my wife realized she could do 300 miles or more in a day. I thought about trailering to the International rally because our trailer is also our camper but I believe we are going to ride. I have spoken up on HD forums defending metric bikes. I've spoken up on Adventure forums defending cruiser riders. And I have spoken up on here defending Harleys before. The narrow mindedness really gets old. Some say its all in good fun. The 1st gen and 2nd gen bantering is in good fun but I have seen members leave when they got tired of the constant HD bashing. HD provides lots of good paying jobs. As far as I know none of the metric bike do any more. I oncehad a Kawasaki that was made in the USA. Are there still any of them made here? How long before the last Goldwing? 72000 miles on my 2002 and most of the time I had 2 bikes and some of the time 3 while I've been putting the 7200 miles on. Rode home in the rain twice last week.

South of Saint Louis are Elephant Rock state park,Johnson Shut-Ins, The Big Spring at Van Buren, Current River,Jacks Fork river,Eleven Point river. Lots of big springs. My photo is of me standing beside Greer Spring which is in a designated wilderness area. The Ozark Scenic Riverways where the first in the nation. Riding in the area or Northwest Arkansas is beautiful. You can Google any of these things and get more info.

I have always been able to hear some sound from the rear speakers even when I am on headset.

I went out one morning when mine was about the same age as yours. Same thing, a puddle of absolutely clean oil right under the shock. Of course that is close to the drain tubes. I went to the dealer and got the same run around your getting. Within a couple of months it started leaking air so fast that within a half hour it was all the way down. Finally at that point they replaced the shock.

Aftermarket Seat - Corbin vs. Russell Day-Long
midnightventure replied to RedRider's topic in Watering Hole
I have a Corbin. Great looking seat. I have had it apart several times trying to make it comfortable. I'm not impressed with it at all. Somebody had a Russel Day Long on here a while back and I wish I had bought it. I rode the original seat 860 miles one day and I think the Corbin feels about the same at about 400 miles. TThe Corbin has a backrest and my original doesn't. -
I am starting to wonder if 860 lbs is just to heavy for a pair of motorcycle tires.
-
I mount and balance my own tires. I have located and marked the heavy spot on my wheels. When I align the yellow dot with the heavy spot(not the valve stem) sometimes I don't have to add any weight.

I started out with the Yamalube but the Honda dealer bought the Yamaha dealer and immediately raised the price a dollar so I went to the local oil warehouse and ordered 3 cases of Pennzoil 20/50 motorcycle oil. About the time that ran out I found a couple of cases of 10/40 Kawasaki oil at a surplus store and I am still working on using it up. I have never been comfortable with the oil change intervals that are recommended with the synthetic.

I stocked up on primers bullets and powder years ago and I am really glad. I hope the ammo situation turns back around eventually.

Ditto. I put a clip on it to keep it closed since it can't zip all the way.

special thanks to freebird.also dealer..and a question
midnightventure replied to jlh3rd's topic in Watering Hole
Disconnecting the carb heaters is easy and helped me with the electrical load. I have been thinking about going back and installing a switch but haven't got around to it. -
This is a question that I have been trying to figure out myself. Here in my home town we have already lost all three dealerships that we had. I think and I stress the think part, I don't know anything for sure, that the manufacturers basically have been oversupplying for several years now and have been cutting each others throats. About the time the unions were finally making enough concessions to help the situation the news media started pounding on the economy until they just absolutely killed most peoples confidence, which I believe is one of the biggest components of a strong economy. Right now there aren't any car companies making money but when they get the supply cut down enough prices will go up and the survivors will be profitable. I just hope we don't end up with just one American manufacturer. A lot of people think Ford is doing OK but they just had a lot of money borrowed before the financial crisis kicked in.

After you ride it for a while report back on your gas mileage. I bet it is pretty good.

I will not be able to be there for every day of the International Rally. I would like to know which evening the meal that is included will be. That seems like one of the best chances to meet a lot of members so if I am going to go I would like to be there for that. I f there is a page with a schedule of events I have not been able to find it.

Harley still sells more than anybody else. They make what their customers want to buy. At least they don't cheat on the speedometer to make their bikes look like they are faster and get better gas mileage than they really do like the Japanese manufacturers do. GM and Chrysler were also making the products their customers wanted until gas prices went sky high. Even Toyota which is considered the best managed manufacturing company in the world is losing big money right now. And yes I like my 95 Trans Am, my 2001 sunfire and my 2003 GMC Sonoma. When I had my Sportster I liked it very much but I could sell it for what I paid for it and I would have lost 7000 dollars on my Venture. I just hope we don't end up with one American car manufacturer.

An accident that really hits close to home.

I know 75 year old people that can do everything fine BUT I see old people drive around slow and then go up to a stop sign and go through just like it isn't there. They run wide or short in turns. I think there is a correlation in how competent they are when they get older to how active they were when they were younger and how active they are now. Exercise goes a long way towards maintaining abilities. Its a shame we can't weed the bad ones out before they kill somebody. -
I had a Lumina van with the 3.1 and it did ok. I have never heard of the 3.8 not getting great gas mileage. I have a 95 Trans Am with 30000 miles and the LT1 engine and it gets 25MPG. My wifes Sunfire with a 4 cylinder only gets 31.

I went on a 300 mile dual sport ride with about 50 others Saturday. At every stop the Harley riders where friendly and asking questions about the bikes and the ride.
