How This Big Old Top-heavy Bike May Have SAVED My LIFE
sarges46 replied to Aimhigh's topic in Watering Hole
I have been having regular (yearly) checkups. The doc does bloodwork the whole caboodle. The year I turned 40...he snaps on the rubber gloves, cuddled up to my backside and told me to "relax". He's been doing that for 10 years now....still cant relax though! This year he started on colon cancer screening test....that I didnt care for one bit!!! But i am good for 5 years before the next one. It is a good thing the doc caught this....my wishes for a speedy recovery from your surgery. -
No problems...that bear wouldnt never caught me....it would have been slipping and sliding in my poop!

In the city I ride like everyone is trying to kill me...seems that they are and I've never done anything to warrant that! Fingers riding on the front brake in the city...constantly aware of whats going on...stay out of blind spots and always leave an escape route for evasive actions. Highway....if lots of trees close to road...fingers on the brake ready for critter crossing....aware of surroundings again. I have just purchased the Butler brake mod from Rick and intend to put it on in the spring. I locked up my rear tire this fall and the resulting skid scared me so much that I will do anything for that not to happen again. I really thought with my experiance riding and practising the rear braking that it would never happen...but in the panic of the moment I hammered on that rear brake so hard that before I knew it I was almost sideways! At least I did remember not to release it and probably high siding. I got lucky and managed to stay in reasonable control and evaded the vehicle that crossed paths with me.

sorry to hear this Brad and Lonna. Knowing you though.....you will steal someones bike come spring time for a third the price. I cant see you without two wheels for long.

I had them on my 89 blue as well! Wait a minute it was Boo's old bike too. I liked the stirrups but if you have a big heel then they get in the way or you have to reposition them so your foot is at more natural angle.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, David. It's always difficult isnt it.

Today we said our final good-byes to a fellow co-worker who passed away last Tuesday. She was only 30 years old and worked on my team. Vibrant happy and one heck of an officer who took no guff from anyone. She has left a hole in my shift that will be hard to replace. She was to be at work with us that day but had booked sick. We received the call early afternoon from another co-worker who said she was being taken to the hospital but not to worry as she was alert and talking with the attendents. By the time the ambulance got to the hospital she was gone. She had a blood clot that travelled from her leg to her lungs. Its a shame. See you Allison.

Well all I can say is that I am glad you are ok. Good gear saves lives for sure. I did with Bigbob too even though it couldnt protect him from getting busted up. But it sure lessoned the effects. -
Must be crowded under that rock...cause I was there as well! Dang good thing for the side car..but that still must have been a shock!

It might smoke a little burning off that stabil or seafoam. No harm done. And thats a good tip about washing it if you ride during the winter....I hear that Ontario really like the salt on the roads....kinda like here! A full tank is always good to prevent corrosion as well. Our are stored with seafoam in and the batteries out......somewhere I read that icy cold concrete isnt good for the rubber so I make sure that there is wood under the tires. -
I had them on my first gen. They looked sharp and helped protect the tops from scuff marks. One day I will get a set for my 2nd gen. More chrome always looks good! Here is a link to a previous discussion with some areas to look included. http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8865

That is some serious injuries for such a low speed crash! I got thrown off mine much slower and didnt hurt at all but the bike took a cosmectic hit. Our friend Bigbob is mending now from his high speed dump and is pretty sure he will ride again but believes it will be on a smaller bike. He's come along way from not wanting to ride to where he is now. All I can say is to trust yourself and what you believe you are up to doing. If you think you have to turn your back on riding then we still support you. I can understand that it wouldnt be much fun anymore if you have more fear than enjoyment...it wouldnt make sense to continue. I hope for a complete and successful recovery from you injuries. You have time to think about things and make the peace you need.

Or how about "Lower than a snakes belly in a wagon rut!"

Good news! I know this may not agree to some but I believe in physio-therapy and that it works. Or should I say it worked well for Marilyn. She had her knee rebuilt two years ago and followed the instructions of excersises to a tee. She recovered fully and this was important...especially in our job with corrections....you have to be able to fight if need be and a bum knee is not a good thing to have. Our prayers are with Janet for a full recovery.

Hmmm...that seems odd to me...most of us complain that the revs are too low in 5th gear and kick it down a notch to pass....gives that extra ummph. Some guys have actually changed the rear ends to the vmax which is smaller gearing I believe and like that alot more that the larger 5th gear.

5 miles over the limit. On the interstates....if its terribly busy like around the major cities I will travel with the flow of traffic. Other wise over the limit slightly and let those that want to pass...pass.

I would have if it wasnt blue! And I have some interest in my midnight already locally.

Not to sure on the clutch but I can tell you if want acceleration at 50-60 you will need to downshift. 5th gear is a over drive gear and wont likely pull away from a turtle! The bike likes to rev so dont feel shy about letting her do that the rev limiter will stop you from doing any harm. Also if you continue to get the shake rattle vibration...maybe your carbs need synching.
