Extra cubes?
Squeeze replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
With a quick browsing i see you Chart is wrong at the front Brake Diameters. MKI is 267mm, MKII is 282mm, VMax is 282mm until 1993 and 298mm afterwards -
Well, they may be right in that Statement, when you mounted their Jet Needles. Factory Pro is using Titanium Needles and those are prone to wear out the Needle Jet fast. 5000 mls, this might be right if you're riding in Town only. But this is mostly with other Carbs than those our Bikes use. E.g. the Downdraft Crabs from the YZF 1000 and early R1's are prone to such wear very premature.

Great Ride, Congrats !!! !!! Now, if you want to know how to sink another 8 or 10 k in it, just ask ... :whistling: I'm allways willing to help a fellow Member out After some serious Reconfigurations, my '99 handles much sharper than a good Knife. But still doesn't reach the '09. Doesn't matter, i love them both.

Basic engine performance upgrade recomendations
Squeeze replied to goodwrench1's topic in General Tech Talk
You may be right in your Opnion about the 2Gen isn't meant to be a high Perfomance Bike, but the Topic here is about more Power. Who said Touring Bikes shouldn't have adequate Power to meet modern Standards ? As the 2Gen is a much detuned Engine, why couldn't one ride a Bike what they like and have more Power ? If i'd be riding a 2Gen, i sure would have fitted a Vmax Motor a long Time ago. I don't like to ride a underpowered Bike. If i like the Ride otherwise, why should i not get all out of what's hidden and crippled in there at least ? I was riding my 1Gen with a Buddy on his Vmax not too long ago, i was leading and rode the S--t out of my VR. My Buddy asked afterwards what I've done to the Motor because it's so fast. My Answer was, nothing special is done and i'm feeling way too slow, not adequate in my Terms. He was i awe ... What i'm saying is, there are sure different Approaches to the Question of Power and how much is enough ... Back in 1984, when the japanese Engineers asked Bob Starr about how much Power should be in the Vmax, he answered "Too much would just about enough". I love his Point of View. I can control Power by the Twist of my Wrist, but i can't control the Lack of Power that Way. -

The REAR Spline is lubed by "thrown" Oil up from the Ring Gear. But a little Moly60 on the Splines would be a good Idea. Just don't clogg thoses two Holes with the Grease. -
You just watch your Back out there !!

1st Gen Service Manual missing cam specs
Squeeze replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Guys, but i just tell it like i know it. No Rocket Scientist here. Another Aspect to keep in Mind is not only Lift and Duration, but also the Overlap of IN and EX Cams. If the Borings in the Cams would be milled to be adjustable you basically could change the Characteristics of the Motor from torquier to red line Champ. Of Course, that's all within basic Limits, but the Overlap is not to belittle. -

First off, I'd try to isolate the Problem by exchanging the Sliders with the Carb next to it. If the Culprit is the Slider, the Problem will be at the other Carb and the #2 Carb should be back in Business as normal. While doing so, I'd check the Lifter Holes in the bottom of the Sliders. If the Problem stays at #2 Carb, there's an Air Passage clogged. Air Passages come from the upper Carb Throat(the big oval Hole), a Passage is inside the Diaphragm Bowl Cover sealed with the small O-Ring(check both Direction where the O-Ring is) and one Passage is going through the Brass Jet(PAJ#2-Size 170) behind the Diaphragm on the right Side. Be careful while blowing compressed Air through that Passage because there's another small Diaphragm sitting on the Side of the Carb which might be damaged if your get to much Air into the Passage. Basically, if blow Air with the Air Gun carefully into the oval Hole in the Carb Throat the Slider should move. -
Well, maybe we should look into a Group Buy on that Issue. I'd be interested in five of those, completely with the Connectors and Terminals. My Shipping could be sent over to Danob11 with his Unit. We probably could safe a Buck or Three when getting together 20 Sets or so ...

1st Gen Service Manual missing cam specs
Squeeze replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can't tell the Cam Differences by just using the Specs. If you want to know the real Differences, you'll need to put both Cams on the Bench, mount a Angle Scale and take Measurements about the Elevation above the Base Circle every two Degrees Turn Angle at least. Mark this on a Sheet of Paper or Excel (where x-Axis is Turn Angle in Degrees and y-Axis is Elevation on 1:4 or 1:5 scaled Dimension) and you'll see the Differences in the Sinus Waves you'll create. You might proceed this with the EX Cams also. You'll need to look at the Mounting Holes as well, because these fixed Holes can cause Differences in the IN/EX Valve Overlap. It's not that easy, but you could do it with some Measuring Devices. Basically, Vmax Cams have a different Profiles, they open earlier and close later than the VR Cams. It's not that much of Difference but it's there. Even those Vmax vary by Years, the newer they are, the tamer they went. You right about the Valve Diameter and the Springs. The Vmax Springs are good for 1kRpM more than the VR Springs. The Valve Diameter and the Valve Stem Difference give the Vmax more Filling per Stroke. Filling is one Key to create Power. More Filling, more Power. -

Maybe the Diaphragm is torn apart, maybe the Diaphragm sperated form the the Slider (happens), maybe the Slider is stuck (happens). Normally you can move the Slider with two Fingers or carefully using a Screwdriver. If the Slider moves without sticking, you'll find the Culprit inside the Diaphragm Bowl. -
Look for Vacuum Leaks first. Use a flamable Spray, Brake Cleaner or something like that and carefully spray it around the Carb Boots between Carb and Intake as well as the Area where the Intake Manifolds meet the Cyl.-Head.

Great Job !! Did you measure System Voltages before and after the Mod ? Would be interesting to know. It have the Shindegen on my new Max. It's mounted lying flat right underneath the Passenger Seat. I won't get hot or Momma would have a great Seat Heating. I'll mount the Shindegen on my Venture this next Winter while the Venture will receive a serious Overhaul and Update. In the Meantine, also found out that this Unit is used in the FJR1300 since 2007 at least. Regarding the 2 Wires of each Color, I checked the '83 Wiring Diagram and comparing this with frankd's Statement, I think that's another Point where the Manual is far off the real World. I suspected the brown Wire to be the "Sense" Wire and the red Wire as D+, a common Notation of the R/R Output Wire, Black is Ground. But The Wiring Diagram is much different to that. There shouldn't be two Wires of the same Color at all. I'm glad SaltyDog already figured this out.

not motorcycle....suggestions for tire bead seating
Squeeze replied to jlh3rd's topic in Watering Hole
120 psi should be way enough to seat the Tire. What about some Dish Washer Soap around the Hump and the Tire Bed Area ? -
