  1. Let me introduce myself, My names Luke, Im 18, in collage at Michigan Tech, and have been riding bikes for 2 years now. I have had 3 bikes in that time my first (and current) 1982 Virago 750, an old Honda XL18s basket case i put back together and traded that for a 1974 Honda CB550 cafe'd it (http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=32766.0), rode it for a month and a half and sold it. I have always kinda liked the touring bikes (venture being my favorite that i could afford), and am looking to get something a little more practical for a long haul or two and I am a big guy (6'3, 200 lbs) so i want something bigger than my Virago, I have a chance to trade my extra truck (long story how it became extra) for a 1983 Venture with 24000 miles and a 1966 Suzuki B100P. I am excited, already have plans for the Venture. If at least the venture checks out i should have 2 more bikes in my collection in less than a week! Does anyone have know any specific things i should inspect hard/ problem area's on this bike when i check it out? Also I will have some cash and time over the winter to do some work and upgrade the bike over the winter is there any upgrades you would suggest i make (GPS, driving lights, tapered steering bearings...anything)

Jeff

  4. Ok so I finally have the 05 RSTD delievered from Sunner Southern Callifornia. Of course the weekend it arrived the temp was only 10 degrees outside. So being new to this and bike in another town, long story as to why but it will be coming home with me soon. By photos can you wonderfully intelligent people help me to answer a few questions. First is that orginal exhaust. (you will need to go to my album to review the photos). Second other than the pin stiping and the highway pegs is there any other noticable add ons? Virago's are my passion for years. Only one issue, too small for the wife and i to ride comfortably. So on to the next question, bike is out of California, I bought it from the dealership so I am unable to talk to the orginal owner. What I want to know is, is there any power robbing annoying emissions systems that I can remove from the bike? She has 60k on her and from what my dad said, rattle the windows in the shop when it started after it was delivered. So any help would be great. Thanks all, PS I included a photo of my 85 Virago, highly customized. All I can say is the wife said sell my virago and sell her bike and buy a better bike. AKA RSTD. SO I sold all the other bikes but I am keeping the Virago as my 3 yr son loves to help me and why not have a bike to tinker with. JK
  5. I received this message from an ex-venturerider who sold his bike over a year ago. He remembered though that some of our members had been members of the Virago club and some may have known Mike Vehovic. Don, Hi, it's been over a year since I sold my Venture so I'm not sure what's happening on the forum but I know that some of your members were also part of the Virago Owners Club (VOC). We lost a brother this week in a tragic accident, Mike Vehovic from the Indiana PA area. It's suspected that a medical condition contributed to this, as Mike was a very safe rider. Perhaps you can let your members know as some of them may have known Mike. http://www.indianagazette.com/a_police_courts/article_8a4fa2b2-c1c5-5be9-ae59-134bdb564945.html The VOC members are in stunned shock over this. He was a good man, a good family man, and a good friend who will be missed by all who knew him. Mike Vehovic, R.I.P.

    Virago's

Hey guys i just helped a friend buy anV 86 virago 1100, the pretty two toned one with the Gold accents. The bike runs but has been neglected, there is what i understand to be a chronic starter problem and this bike seems to have it. Like it has a broken tooth or teeth. Also the rear cylinder doesn't kick in right away. I was going to look up a Virago site but figured some of us most own this bike which is very popular and considered a 10 best cruiser. On top of that this site is the best anyway. So if you own a virago or have a wife that does and you have worked on it . please give me a shout. I'm also going to need A NEW front wheel because the bike was hit by a car while stored on a barn. Its not terrible but noticeable. The bike is for a friend and i want it right.Carb claning and that stuff i can do but if theres anyone with one of these nbikes athat can help me or knows of someone I'd be very grateful to get in touch with them. Also anypone with spare pARTS , I NEED A REAR TURN SIGNAL. Let me know thanks.PB&J.
  7. Started a thread yesterday about my new to me bike. Thanks to Phoneman1981, he helped me resize my pix!!! So, here she is!!!!! I am so tickled I got her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and I'm even more tickled, I'm able to handle her!!!) And yes I'm keeping my Virago, as she's the best bike I've ever owned !! 2004 1100 VStar Classic
  8. I am sooooooooooooo excited!!!! I'll try and make this short....our oldest son bought a 2004 1100 V Star Classic about 5 years ago. I've always told him, if he ever wants to sell that bike that I wanted first crack at it......Well, I finally got my chance. He was at the dealers buying a new bike and I got the call! I had 5 minutes to make up my mind! I ride an 1100 Virago that I just love. I was worried I might not be able to handle the V Star with it being so much heavier....anyway...he brought it home to me Sunday and I put 65 miles on it. The hubby followed me the with Venture....and so far so good. It's going to take me a while to get used to the width of the bike, wider handlebars, floor boards and the braking, but I think I'll be able to do it!!! I will never sell my Virago because she has been the best bike I could have ever had, but I'm so tickled to get the VStar!! The only thing I want to add is a windshield. Called J & P cycle...shield was $157.00 but I about fell over that the quick disconnect mounting hardware was $147.00 in addition!!!! I didn't order it because I was in sticker shock. Anyone know where I can find it cheaper? I tried uploading a pix of it but I'm getting the message upload failed! Don't know what I'm doing wrong....Can anyone help me out?
  9. I am looking for a wind screen and engine gaurds for my 89 Virago 1100. Does anyone have any idea where to go?
  10. i bought a 84 virago for a good price. but buying parts are high. got a gas tank and new keys. but having a time finding a starter, any ideas other than buying a new one. which is in the high four hunderd range. just going to ride it around home. so don.t have to ride venture . been fun restoring it so far.
  11. front fork deflectors they would want to part with for a reasonable price? We have the brackets, I just need the plexiglass parts. The hubby is going to put them on my Virago.
  12. I'm working on a project to resurrect an 1987 Virago for a friend. I was looking for some tech infomation about carbs and other things. Does anyone know of a Virago forum or a source for tech info on this bike?
  13. Looking for some suggestions as to what might be causing my Virago to idle high, at or near 2,000 rpm's. Just recently started doing it.
  14. I bought my wife a 1990 Virago 1100 for Christmas. The odometer showed 17,000 and change. The bike looked to be in really great shape. However, I have had to add about 1/2 quart of oil every 250 miles. If the odometer was correct at 17,000 miles, I would think the rings should still be in good shape. It doesn't leak any oil. Is there anywhere else the oil could be going besides ring blow-by? Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
  15. I belong to the Virago website, but it's not as user friendly for me. I know there are Virago owners on this website....so here's my question. I have a 95 1100 Virago. I am wondering if there are any wind deflectors to put on it. I've tried doing searches but haven't seen anything. Everytime I ride, I have to hold my left hand, palm down, by the gas tank to deflect the wind. The crazy thing is it's only the left side. Don't know if they make them for Virago's or not. Anyone have any knowedge?
  16. Does the carbs on a 1990 Virago 1100 have accelerator pumps? Reason I was asking is because I went to look at one last night and before the guy cranked it up, he rolled the throttle wide open several times before he tried to crank it. It cranked right up as soon as he hit the starter switch but it seems useless to roll the throttle open if it doesn't have pumps. It seemed to run out well and I bought it for a Christmas present for the wife....haven't gotten it home yet...trying to surprise the wife Christmas day
  17. Friends got a 92 Virago 1100. It has the updated starter assembly but still has a problem. It does not have the 2 spring clips that fail regularly. The starter intermediate gears that are on a spiral between the flywheel and motor do not return to the home position. These gears are on a pivot with a spring. Please tell me it is not the starter clutch that it $227!!! Any suggestions?
  18. we had our first snowfall last night, ground's white, and it's still coming down. Even my Virago looked depressed this morning. It's gonna be a lonnnnnnnnng winter!
  19. Not sure how many of you have seen this, but this bill got its first reading in parliament on the 27th of October. It doesn't affect me yet - my kids are over 14 and I don't have grandchildren, but my 6 year old nephew has been wanting to ride on the back and can now touch the rear pegs on the Virago ... http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/bills/bills_detail.do?locale=en&BillID=2098 Cheers,
  20. who owns a Virago. Russell, When I'm on the Virago, I always get wind blowing up on the left side of my bike that hits me right in the face. Does this ever happen to you? I find that if I put my left foot on the passenger peg it stops it, (but that obviously looks stupid not to mention, it's not the safest way to ride) I don't know why it's only on the left side but anyway....Do you know of any place that sells wind deflectors for an 95 1100 Virago?
  21. I'm not that computer literate but I don't see how to post on the classifieds. My wife has a 750 virago that we're considering selling or trading to a pull behind pop-up. Any help would be appreciated. TIA, Eddie:puzzled:
  22. Any one know of a good Virago 1100 forum on the net? A colleague at work is looking for some help with her '94, she's having electrical troubles. Google and I found a couple but they didn't look that busy. Where do the serious XV1100 owners hang out ? Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  23. Hubby and I are new members as of a couple of weeks ago! Started out on a 95 Virago 1100, then bought a V Star a couple of years ago so we could each have our own bike. Hubby traded in the V-Star for 05 Midnight Venture last month. Finding this forum has already been a wealth of info....but my question is for my Virago.... do you know of any place that would have a used, good condition engine guard and highway pegs reasonably priced for it? Saw your posts about the Vroom, vroom. We rode to Wabasha this weekend, jumped the river for a while then came back home. The wind was crazy.....took me all day Sunday to recoupe! 10 hours of fighting that was too much! Thanks for any info.
  24. Hi guys, My 87 is getting a little weak on starting, especially when hot. I've checked for voltage drop in the circuits (had that problem with other Yammy's) and it is normal. It's probably just a tiring battery, but I've had issues on my Virago with the starter and the one on the Venture looks similar. The Virago sometimes gets all plugged up in the brush / commutator area with brush dust and needs simply a good cleaning out. But it's realy easy to get the brush cap off on that bike because of it's location. Does the Venture have any common problems with the starter? Things that make it start operating weakly? What's involved in removing it? Do I have to go into the case cover to remove a snap ring or anything? Can I leave the starter in place and just get the brush cap off? Thanks, Jeremy
  25. Hey all, I may be able to pick up an old 1100 Virago with starter and carb issues. Has new rear shocks, battery and solenoid. I am looking at it as a winter project and will sell it come spring. What sort of problems do these bikes have besides starter issues? Any comments or advice is welcome. Rick
