  1. Ok. It seems like I have three options. 1. Used Second Gen starter off Ebay will cost about $120 delivered. 2. The Rick's Motorsports Premium Starter is about $220, 1 year warranty 3. What looks like the way to go - Several different brand labels on what appears to actually be the same starter, a Mitsuba, from $160 to $170, all with a 1 year warranty. An extra $40 for new with warranty seems a no-brainer. Ricks appears to have a shinier case, but nothing stating what technically makes thier's better. Has anybody used this "mitsuba"????? Edit - more searching, Mitsuba is Japanese, not Chinese. Maybe they are the original supplier anyway?

  3. I just got off the phone with JayBird, he said he's coming up on Friday so if there's a need, he'll be there with brush in hand

  5. I did the ground wire mod on an 86 starter that I had after my original was dragging a little. It seemed to really help the starter and it cranks over good. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up an 09 RSV starter and as I understand it, it should be a 4 brush starter. It came off a bike with 40K miles and looks very clean. I was the only bidder on ebay and got it for $29.95 plus about $13 shipping from Pinwall. I am getting ready to remove the exhaust collector on the bike and replace it with one that I cut open and repaired that rattled before. I was thinking about putting the 09 starter on the bike since I was going to have the exhaust headers off on the front. My question is; does the newer 4 brush starter also need the ground wire mod or should it be ok the way it is? RandyA
  6. My grandson and I visited a couple of rallies this past summer. He has since asked what kind of paint was it that the custom pin strippers and mural painters used for the artwork on the bikes. He is a pretty good artist as far as using an air brush goes. I would rather he practice on my old trailer than on some ones private property, If you know, please help.
  7. Well, I think my starter is getting tired. I get a slow hot crank mostly and I sometimes get a slow cold crank, but def. slower when hot. I read somewhere that the ventures have a two brush starter and the vmax has a 4 brush starter. I guess I could take mine apart and clean it but it would probably just be easier go get another used one, tune it up and throw it in and keep spares.
  8. I got a 4 brush VMaxstarter off Ebay for my Venture. $60 with shipping. Came off a 92 with 26k miles on it. Sandblasting and powder coating will clean it up like new. 1990 and newer 1st gen VMax's have the 4 brush starter. There have been a few questions on here about this starter. It should crank better than the stock Venture 2 brush starter. Doing the grounding wire mod will be harder to do, since there is not much room on the brush plate to attach the additional ground wire. Also shown is a stock 2 brush starter brush plate for comparison. 9. I have searched for an hour and cant find it. There is a specific bike starter that will bolt right on and work perfectly for the MK1 1st gens. I want to upgrade to a 4 brush starter if I am taking the thing off. Anyone have any links or info as to what bikes have a better starter that bolt right on our bikes?
  10. Has amy one found a good way to clean the fins on the moter? Any products that you can spray on & wash off that work? or what kind of brush works well? I to have spent a lot of money on things that don't work! "THANKS"
  11. The starter on my 83 Venture has developed a problem that isn't easily repaired (shorted field coil), and it's time to replace it. There was a dealer that was selling the 4 brush starters to us for a good price. Anybody remember which dealer it was?? If I remember correctly the 2 brush starter from the Venture, the 4 brush starter from the V-Max and the starter from the 2nd generation Ventures will all fit. Am I correct?? Is the 2nd generation starter the 4 brush type?? Anybody have a starter they want to sell? Frank
  12. Total maint. day today. Had the rear tire off and was cleaning the splines, but unsure how to get into the areas in the wheel where the splines go??????????? Found out that a 20 gauge shotgun brass bore brush works great on the end of a drill! Bought at Wally World for a buck and a half. Inserted on the end of my cordless and the brush cleaned out the holes super fast! I think I'll keep a cpl. in my tool box!
  13. Hi guys, My 87 is getting a little weak on starting, especially when hot. I've checked for voltage drop in the circuits (had that problem with other Yammy's) and it is normal. It's probably just a tiring battery, but I've had issues on my Virago with the starter and the one on the Venture looks similar. The Virago sometimes gets all plugged up in the brush / commutator area with brush dust and needs simply a good cleaning out. But it's realy easy to get the brush cap off on that bike because of it's location. Does the Venture have any common problems with the starter? Things that make it start operating weakly? What's involved in removing it? Do I have to go into the case cover to remove a snap ring or anything? Can I leave the starter in place and just get the brush cap off? Thanks, Jeremy
  14. Hired a couple of guys today, to clean up some brush in the back yard. ( three bushes's )
  15. Has anyone gotten a Color-rite touch-up paint pen or jar for their bike and how well does the color match? If you got the pen was it fairly easy to use of would you get the jar with a brush next time? Did you end up getting a clear coat to use as well? Thanks
