accessory light bars
Prairiehammer replied to Hawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Most if not all VentureLine accessories were made by Drag Specialties. Similarly, so were Hondaline accessories. So, don't be afraid to search for other than Drag Specialties branded items. Here are some grills for the mini twins. New in the original VentureLine package. The seller claims they are for the mini twins but he also has another auction with some other grills that are smaller and they look like they are for the mini twins. Better check with the seller to clarify. Note on the second listing the VentureLine part number and description is readable, so you can compare what is what. http://www.ebay.com/itm/230570120320?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT http://www.ebay.com/itm/330515407643?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT -

Those look like Baron mini twins. I think you can find them at Drag Specialties as well as other motorcycle accessory businesses on line. Such as: http://www.catonscyclecenter.com/Drag-Specialties-BARON-TWIN-AND-BARON-MINI-TWIN-MARKER-LIGHTS-detail.htm?productId=7922788 I see them on ebay, too as well as the grills. Do this google search: https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&tab=nw#hl=en&sugexp=les%3B&gs_nf=3&gs_mss=baron%20mini%20t&tok=b1B6BydQXtGel-uLsUb97w&cp=16&gs_id=nm&xhr=t&q=baron+mini+twins&pf=p&safe=off&tbo=d&sclient=psy-ab&oq=baron+mini+twins&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=cb8467668c935b5&bpcl=38897761&biw=1680&bih=878 -

I am planning to hit all the states and provinces I can but I am also limiting daily rides to about 250 miles each day. With the exception of the ride from Camden Hills SP in Maine to Webster, MA, I am avoiding Interstates. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004bce268403f2938d55&msa=0&ll=43.113014,-76.5802&spn=3.107639,7.13562 https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004bcbaec46b08daed52&msa=0 https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004bdd240c2a373f005b&msa=0 https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004cd761405ec043eae9&msa=0 https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004cd76e5364f80272bd&msa=0&ll=42.054136,-71.760292&spn=0.197564,0.445976

Jonesy: Actually I am coming from Maine to Webster, MA. From Webster, dropping down into Rhode Island and then heading west along northern Connecticut to New York and then Delaware Water Gap. I haven't finalized which campground near Webster we'll be staying, although the Indian Ranch campground is looking good.

I planned to ride across northern Connecticut, entering New York near Kingston and continuing to Port Jervis. Sound OK? https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=203185958368302937986.0004cd77100ba2304ed09

Thanks for the offer Big Tom and for all the other replies and suggestions. I have planned a pretty ambitious trip with a goal to add 10 states and provinces to my map. Unfortunately, this means there is not a lot of spare time to explore what all the states have to offer. A trip to New York state alone could be a full two week tour. The map will be used to find the back roads from Four Mile Creek State Park near Niagara to Old Forge, NY and then on to Stanstead, QC by way of Adirondack SP, Au Sable Chasm and Rouses Point. A few days later, I will use the map to plan a route from Camden Hills SP, Maine to Delaware Water Gap, skirting NYC (by as wide a margin as possible).

How does that air-cooled engine get cooled? Is there a fan under the hood? Probably no storage under the hood and behind the "radiator grill".

Thanks, Jonas. But I want a paper map to carry on the bike. I have done extensive route planning on the Harley Ride Planner and Google Maps, but I need a folding map for the trip. I don't own (or want) a laptop and/or smart phone. New York doesn't want me to come and explore, I guess. "Just keep moving, there's nothing here. Move along."

I am planning a 'sickle trip for next summer. We plan to ride from Illinois to Niagara area then to Adirondacks, Vermont, Quebec, Maine, New Brunswick, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, etc. and back home. About 3500 miles. We plan to camp every night except if it is raining or very cold, then Mom and Pop motels are preferred. I have obtained state highway maps from all the states we will be riding through except for New York. I've spent considerable time online trying to get an official state highway map from New York, but the links to "obtain a state highway map" return a 404 error. I sent away to the "I Love New York, Division of Tourism" in Albany via snail mail, but the letter returned as "not deliverable as addressed" even though that address was on their website. Researching the New York governmental website was a waste of time; kept referring me to same dead link. Registered with the I Love Yew York website and requested travel information, thinking that New York, like all the other states I had requested tourism information, would send along a state highway map, but no. I received a fifty page glossy travel guide, with nary a map. So my question/favor to those New York residents: would you obtain a New York state highway/road map and mail it to me? Does NY offer free road maps at their border Welcome Centers? Does New York have Welcome Centers? Thanks.

HEY! I'm not old, I'm a carpenter! The splines are still used today.
-
The rectangular pieces are spline for joining mitre joints. They're inserted into a narrow kerf cut into the ends of mitered door casings. These splines then hold the mitered casings together to form what we call "U"s of pre-assembled door casing. The discs, if they are of thin sheet metal, may be used in the old days as button nails are used today. One would nail or staple through the disc with a hammer tacker while applying tar paper to a roof. The discs increased the holding power of the fastener to prevent wind from blowing off the felt.

Ignitech group buy interest feeler
Prairiehammer replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I would like one for my 1990. Just to clarify: ANY payment via PayPal is an additional $8.00? Or just a PayPal payment that is not labeled as a gift? Nevermind about the PayPal question; I get it now. You don't want to try to circumvent PayPal fees by suggesting a buyer label the transaction with you as a gift. Gotcha. PM with a mailing address and I will send a check. Thanks for offering this group buy especially with your value added items. -

Another way to identify 2 brush vs. 4 brush externally: Originally Yamaha used a 2 brush starter from 83-90 in the Venture. The 91-93 Venture and RSV used a 4 brush starter. Upgrading to a 4 brush in the earlier bikes may have taken place......so how do you know? If you examine the end plate of the starter and its a Mitsuba SM-229 series....its a 2 brush. If its a Mitsuba SM-13 series...its a 4 brush. Mitsuba builds starters for many manufacturers....some with different teeth number on the gear, direction of rotation etc...so don't think any used SM-229 or SM-13 model will fit your bike. (Thanks to Neil McRobbie) -
I've contemplated installing the EBC HH pads on my laden '90, but have reservations due to the reported high rotor wear. Rotors for my bike are very expensive if one can even find them. Any First Gen owners with long term HH pad installations out there? What is the accumulated mileage with the HH? Notice any significant rotor wear? What kind of riding have you subjected the bike while wearing the HH pads? One probably shouldn't attempt to put a price on safety (good braking), but if after spending $100 for just the pads and then perhaps several hundred more for rotors (or worse, having no ride-able motorcycle because one can't get any replacement rotors) after a couple seasons of back roads, two-up, trailer towing touring, well that is unacceptably expensive.

Bracken is a fern. Why did your 'mates think twig and fern were appropriate? -
Brian, I received the modified switch plate and it fits with no interference, however it seems to be cocked a little in relation to the switch housing.

Thanks for the effort, Steve. Keeping the Spirit in our First Gen hearts a flickering.

Not according to Cycle Magazine. They ran the '83 Venture through the ¼ mile in 12.69 seconds at 103.92 mph. They also tested the 1986 Venture and it ran the ¼ mile in 12.5 seconds at 104.5 mph.- 20 replies

My suggestion to reinstall the anti-dives was to eliminate a possible cause of the non-compliant suspension. Perhaps the block-off plates are an issue? Inadvertently get a pair for an 83-85 or maybe Earl forgot to mill them to allow bypass? Just sayin' Relatively easy to eliminate the anti-dives as an issue that way.

Put the anti-dive units back on. Don't hook them up electrically. See what that does.
