Cycle Magazine tested a 1986 Venture at 12.5 seconds and 104.5 mph. They tested a 1983 at 12.69 seconds and 103.92 mph. Hmmm. Either First Gens would have "spanked" the GL1800 and the Second Gen.

Tough call! Personally, (since I have a '90) I would opt for the 1990. About the only thing different between the two besides the '90 being better looking, is that the trunk modification to prevent cracking in the base and behind the passenger backrest will have been done by 1990 by the factory, whereas the '86 would or should have the mods done by the dealer. Technically, the major difference between the two deals with the number of pickup coils. The '90 has but one to fail (more reliability). Any accessories on either? If you want farkle for these old birds, it'll cost you. All accessories for the '86 will fit the '90 and vice versa. -
Debbie and I embarked on a 15 day trip around Lake Superior in 2011 (2850 miles) with everything we needed on the 1990 and no trailer. We carried our personal effects, tent and bedding all within the bags and trunk. Only one thing was strapped on: the tent to the top of the trunk, though I also had a tank bag. I simply stated to Deb that she had one saddlebag that was hers to pack as she desired. I got the other bag. The trunk contained "community" property; blankets, sheets, air mattresses, etc. We both had leather chaps and jackets as well as rain gear and gloves. We wore the chaps only one day, the rest of the trip they took up space. Two cameras, bug spray, maps, Pledge, windshield cloths, maps, travel guides, two phones, etc. She had enough room to buy a fair amount of stuff to bring home. We left nothing behind while on the road. Here was MY packing list and "to do" list for the trip. I don't know what Deb took. (I didn't ask or question. If it fit in her saddlebag she could bring whatever she wanted or needed.) We did not carry food or cook on this trip. We did use a small (six-pack) collapsible cooler for beverages at the campsites.

Mike, Touring Motorcycle Accessories.com has a pair of these. The single photo shows what appears to be identical Starsteps, but TMA says that pair is for 1984-1987 GL1200 Goldwings. TMA has been known to mislabel some of their accessories. Perhaps you could contact them for positive identification. http://www.touringcycleaccessories.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66_22_110&products_id=583&zenid=9792506ea43cf22fc6b95b41c329f4a1

Anyone have these Kriss Starsteps? Anyone ever seen them? I happened on a pair, all grungy and over sprayed. Cleaned 'em up real nice. Mounted easily, but I'm wondering if there are some components missing. The footboard slants a little. Perhaps just a bit worn? Or maybe a bushing is needed on the cross bolt?

Gas smell (revisited)
Prairiehammer replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Andy, Any chance you have a California model (with the fuel emissions canister) and someone has removed the charcoal canister and left the line to such disconnected? -
Thanks, Gary. I've got it into one file, but it is too big for my email server to accept. I use Google drive. If I upload it to there you could download it to the site? Go here: for the Assembly Manual as well as a couple other Venture documents: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BwLuLxb8qHwMUzN0Z2k3NDFwRUU

I've scanned my copy of the 1990 assembly manual. It is a 9.05 mb file. How can I upload that large of a file to the site?
-
I bought one of those assembly manuals for my 1990. I was curious about different things that were to be done by the dealer's (usually) lowest seniority "technician". I'm kinda cynical, I suppose. One bit of information I gleaned from the assembly manual was the EXACT contents of the tool kit. It apparently differs through the years, even amongst the MKII. If anyone is interested, I can scan the assembly manual for the 1990 Royale and post it as a series of pages in pdf format. I don't have a pdf writer that would enable one file of all the manual pages.

Jim, Here are some NOS Drag Specialties grills for mini barons. Not positive they will fit mini twins, though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/lens-grill-BARON-LIGHT-drag-specialites-/150798310457?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item231c479c39&vxp=mtr -

Here's one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271064208347?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 It is in better shape than the other, though it does have some damage and more expensive. -

Most if not all VentureLine accessories were made by Drag Specialties. Similarly, so were Hondaline accessories. So, don't be afraid to search for other than Drag Specialties branded items. Here are some grills for the mini twins. New in the original VentureLine package. The seller claims they are for the mini twins but he also has another auction with some other grills that are smaller and they look like they are for the mini twins. Better check with the seller to clarify. Note on the second listing the VentureLine part number and description is readable, so you can compare what is what. http://www.ebay.com/itm/230570120320?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT http://www.ebay.com/itm/330515407643?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT -

Those look like Baron mini twins. I think you can find them at Drag Specialties as well as other motorcycle accessory businesses on line. Such as: http://www.catonscyclecenter.com/Drag-Specialties-BARON-TWIN-AND-BARON-MINI-TWIN-MARKER-LIGHTS-detail.htm?productId=7922788 I see them on ebay, too as well as the grills. Do this google search: https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&tab=nw#hl=en&sugexp=les%3B&gs_nf=3&gs_mss=baron%20mini%20t&tok=b1B6BydQXtGel-uLsUb97w&cp=16&gs_id=nm&xhr=t&q=baron+mini+twins&pf=p&safe=off&tbo=d&sclient=psy-ab&oq=baron+mini+twins&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=cb8467668c935b5&bpcl=38897761&biw=1680&bih=878 -

I am planning to hit all the states and provinces I can but I am also limiting daily rides to about 250 miles each day. With the exception of the ride from Camden Hills SP in Maine to Webster, MA, I am avoiding Interstates. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004bce268403f2938d55&msa=0&ll=43.113014,-76.5802&spn=3.107639,7.13562 https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004bcbaec46b08daed52&msa=0 https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004bdd240c2a373f005b&msa=0 https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004cd761405ec043eae9&msa=0 https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203185958368302937986.0004cd76e5364f80272bd&msa=0&ll=42.054136,-71.760292&spn=0.197564,0.445976

Jonesy: Actually I am coming from Maine to Webster, MA. From Webster, dropping down into Rhode Island and then heading west along northern Connecticut to New York and then Delaware Water Gap. I haven't finalized which campground near Webster we'll be staying, although the Indian Ranch campground is looking good.

I planned to ride across northern Connecticut, entering New York near Kingston and continuing to Port Jervis. Sound OK? https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=203185958368302937986.0004cd77100ba2304ed09

Thanks for the offer Big Tom and for all the other replies and suggestions. I have planned a pretty ambitious trip with a goal to add 10 states and provinces to my map. Unfortunately, this means there is not a lot of spare time to explore what all the states have to offer. A trip to New York state alone could be a full two week tour. The map will be used to find the back roads from Four Mile Creek State Park near Niagara to Old Forge, NY and then on to Stanstead, QC by way of Adirondack SP, Au Sable Chasm and Rouses Point. A few days later, I will use the map to plan a route from Camden Hills SP, Maine to Delaware Water Gap, skirting NYC (by as wide a margin as possible).

How does that air-cooled engine get cooled? Is there a fan under the hood? Probably no storage under the hood and behind the "radiator grill".
-
Thanks, Jonas. But I want a paper map to carry on the bike. I have done extensive route planning on the Harley Ride Planner and Google Maps, but I need a folding map for the trip. I don't own (or want) a laptop and/or smart phone. New York doesn't want me to come and explore, I guess. "Just keep moving, there's nothing here. Move along."

I am planning a 'sickle trip for next summer. We plan to ride from Illinois to Niagara area then to Adirondacks, Vermont, Quebec, Maine, New Brunswick, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, etc. and back home. About 3500 miles. We plan to camp every night except if it is raining or very cold, then Mom and Pop motels are preferred. I have obtained state highway maps from all the states we will be riding through except for New York. I've spent considerable time online trying to get an official state highway map from New York, but the links to "obtain a state highway map" return a 404 error. I sent away to the "I Love New York, Division of Tourism" in Albany via snail mail, but the letter returned as "not deliverable as addressed" even though that address was on their website. Researching the New York governmental website was a waste of time; kept referring me to same dead link. Registered with the I Love Yew York website and requested travel information, thinking that New York, like all the other states I had requested tourism information, would send along a state highway map, but no. I received a fifty page glossy travel guide, with nary a map. So my question/favor to those New York residents: would you obtain a New York state highway/road map and mail it to me? Does NY offer free road maps at their border Welcome Centers? Does New York have Welcome Centers? Thanks.
