  1. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I bought a used one last year and I don't like it at all. I have had Corbin seats many times and they were great, but this one is a torture rack. I put over 1000 km on trying to "break it in" and the seat won! Also it raised me up about an inch or more and was high-centered, I felt like I was 3 and riding a hobby horse again! I went to an Ultimate and really like it, way comfortable.
  2. Great news! Just in from Yamaha Canada, just got off the phone with Montreal! 2011 Venture will have a bored out, 1948 cc V4 based on the new VMAX, tuned for torque. 225 HP, 248 Ft/Lbs of torque, and trailers don't void the warranty! Estimated top speed is 176 mph and estimated quarter mile is 10.5 seconds! 58 MPG due to new head design! Gold Wings, eat your heart out! Seat height is 27 inches and it has bigger trunk / side bags than the current Venture, weight under 730 pounds due to extensive use of carbon fibre and space-age alloys. List price is $29,999 though...."S" Version has more chrome, custom paint and is $31,999! Hurry to your Yamaha dealer today! I put a deposit on a two-tone Candy Apple red "S" model already for late August delivery! Bob LeDuc
  3. Is the bomb...well worth the money and nothing to slip etc.
  4. Starkruzen: Tehehe I think I bought the last set. I paid about $700 for both wheels. It ended up that the rear one was out of true and I have now quit using it. Instead I picked up a used Venture wheel with the silver coloured spokes, and then polished out the outside part because that's all you can mostly see anyhow with the saddlebags on. Jardine was closing out their wheel program when I bought these in 2007.... Thanks for the complement!
  5. I bought the Ultimate set 3 years ago and love it! I did have 2 mods done, mostly because I have a 29 inch (and dropping :-) inseam and both the wife and I are on the heavy side. I had a bit scooped out from the front of the Ultimate so I can reach the ground better. And I had an alternate pad made for the backrest that is narrower, the stock one was cutting into my wife's inner thighs. The Comfort Cruise that Corbin makes for Yamaha is an evil torture rack, IMHO. I have owned several Corbin seats in the past that were awesome, but the Yamaha Comfort Cruise version showed no sign of breaking in after 1300 km. I did a 650 km day and almost couldn't walk! With the Ultimate I can do 12 hour days, as can my wife with the Ultimate and Airhawk. On the stock seats, 5-6 hours max. On the "Comfort Cruise" I wanted to burn the whole danged bike after 100 miles.....
  6. Here's a pic (but not with a stock wheel). My brakes "sang" before and after, plan to change pads when they die to see if it helps. No big deal though...
  7. Jardine Billet wheels, Avon WWW tires, Radio Caddy fairing with Aquatic AV stereo, Starcom1 digital intercom, Ultimate seat, BUB slip-ons, Dyna ignition module, Race-Tech / Baron's improved and lowered front end, Works Performance rear suspension, Baron's billet floor boards, HD TourPak with Dragonfly 6.5 inch speaker pods, Flanders handlebars, a few Kuryakyn goodies. Oh and an Ultra Star emblem because I couldn't resist....
  8. I would (and do) use Amsoil 10W40 Motorcycle Synthetic and their filter. My clutch basket whine/chirp got quieter with Amsoil. Also I have used it in bikes for years....with great success. Aircooled bikes usually have to have the idle speed adjusted down after Amsoil is first used, the reduced friction causes excessive idle speed...... I talked to a drag bike rider in Phoenix who related that he went from 7.6's to 7.4's by simply changing to Amsoil and no other changes.... at mid-7s, 0.2 is HUGE! Everyone else would probably use something else and few will agree with each other. Any good quality motorcycle-compatible oil and filter that are changed regularly will probably make the bike run longer than most people can stand to ride it. Good luck!
  9. Hi, I installed a leather tank bra that has a pouch on it. I ran the MP3 wire into the pouch where I also keep my MP3 player and Boosteroo. I zip-tied the helmet lead to the MP3 lead and it looks just about as good as the factory Venture setup, IMHO. Good luck!
  10. I too had a SCREAMER when I bought my 2006 RSTD. It was so loud, that with the windshield off and BUB slipons, at 70 MPH all I could hear was the scream. People would come up to me in a parking lot and tell me that I really need to get that bike fixed, something is wrong with it! An "I" basket did most of the trick in my case. It's still in there but not really objectionable. Amsoil helped more. The sad part is that it took 6 months, starting with a simple request, then restating it nicely, finally ending up with both my dealer and myself shouting at Yamaha Canada. During that period, I was put off with lies, excuses, being ignored entirely, and even having a factory "rep" in Montreal try to explain to me that "Noise is subjective. Some motorcyclists actually modify their motorcycles to make more noise"..! (Like you could ever find anyone who would intentionally increase gear whine...sheesh!) Further, their entire attitude was as if I was being unreasonable and that they finally helped me when they didn't really need to, just because they were so nice. Even after I politely requested it, they absolutely refused to be the slightest bit apologetic about building it that way in the first place, or being so hard to deal with about it. The Montral Rep stated "I'm sorry my explanation didn't make you happy! Anyhow, good luck to any who have a screamer...!
  11. Yup them brakes do that. The forks should hold air all winter, mine do.
  12. I have had an Ultimate seat for 3 seasons now and like it pretty well. I am 5'6" and weigh about 270 pounds, so it wasn't built exactly right for me - more like for someone 6 ft tall. I just had the front end of mine narrowed and lowered by a small amount and haven't ridden again yet. But for the build you described for yourself, I would expect the Ultimate to be bang on.... One note is I tried the Yamaha/Corbin "Comfort Cruise" seat and would never own one. I tried to break it in but it won the battle, not me! It is absolutely the most uncomfortable brick that I ever sat on, and I have had 3 Corbin seats on other bikes, each one was superb. This Comfort Cruise seat, however, was simply awful. Also the Comfort Cruise seat raised me up about 1.5 - 2 inches, which I did not need with my 29 inch inseam....! Good Luck!
  13. This sounds exactly like the "chirp" that is inherent with straight cut gears, which our machines have at the clutch basket / transmission interface. Mine was excruciatingly loud and got much better with an "I" coded clutch basket, though it took 6 months of screaming at Yamaha Canada to get any action at all. Amsoil has helped quiet this down even further, though it is still present. BUBs and the iPod cleared out the rest... The bottom line is that it is a flaw in the motorcycle because it ruins the experience that you bought the bike to enjoy....and it is correctable in most cases but you need Yamaha on board or it may become expensive, good luck!
  14. I don't know about the '96, but I bought a Works Performance shock for my 2006, and it is AWESOME! Supple yet pliant, best all around shock I ever owned. I think they originally made them for the early Royal Star so it should be worth checking out.
  15. With a Dyna III ignition on curve 2, K&N airfilters and BUB slipon's, at 3500 feet mine dynoed at 74 HP and 75 Ft/Lbs. Also if you go look at the BUB website, their dyno chart for their complete system looks comparable. When you think about the shaft drive arrangement having two 90 degree angles to overcome and with hardware heavy enough to be rock solid dependable for many years, it's easy to see that about 22 - 25% of the power is robbed.
  16. I had the same problem, my wife was uncomfortable with stock, Ultimate, and Yamaha Comfort Cruise. I got her an Airhawk pad to strap on and now she can ride so long she doesn't even always get off when I stop! It's the same technology that is used for wheelchairs etc. and they cost about $125 or so I think.
  17. My only experience is pulling an Aspen Classic camper trailer - about 500 pounds loaded. I have put on about 10000 miles with it over 3 seasons. I have the same problem. I also have a very small hint of it when 2 up and with a lot of weight on the rear wheel, as in my HD TourPak is full and so is the big T-Bag that fits on top. This was true with two different sets of tires and both the stock rear shock and my new Works Performance unit. I don't really know what causes it - and some Venture riders that I have talked to say that theirs doesn't do it at all. I have had a thought that it may relate to the shaft drive and some uneven shaft jacking as the drive internals rotate, accented due the stress load / weight balance of the bike/trailer combo. But my feeble brain can't make sense of the mechanics of that notion. It's just that the rhythm of the whole thing makes me think of drive train....? For me the bottom line is that it hasn't worsened or changed in any way for 10000 miles and it's no more than an annoyance. So I don't worry about it. But I do stay aware of it and monitor for any changes. Any worsening would certainly be bad news... Anyhow that's how I'm proceeding....good luck!
  18. Hi, The only thing that I will add to the plethora of info already here - after you have mounted new tires and before they begin to wear, try several different stretches of what looks like flat road, and take your hands off the bars for a bit. If you have to shift your weight to make it go straight, you have an alignment problem. If not, you don't. The reason for using different roads is because none of them are really flat and the slope will make it turn a bit . Using a few different roads, you can begin to tell for sure. Good luck!
  19. My 2006 RSTD was LOUD. At 70 mph with BUBs and no windshield, I could hear the chirp above everything else. 6 months of screaming matches with the regional Yamaha Canada rep later, they finally squirted out an 'I' code clutch basket. It stopped about 80% of the noise. Amsoil 10w40 knocked out about half of what was left. Now it's no problem
  20. I typically leave mine on at all times and haven't had a problem. Bear in mind, there is a fuel pump in the circuit, so the old problem we had with gravity-feed "tank-to-carb" arrangement shouldn't occur. The tank supplies the fuel pump and the fuel pump supplies the carbs......
  21. Hey, I believe the "Jetson" chirp refers to the clutch basket whine, or chirp, that is caused by the fitment of straight-cut gears on the clutch basket and primary input gear. Yamaha's party line is that "some do it and some don't but it's not a problem". Personally I think they have loosened their manufacturing tolerances over the years and that is why this is far more prevalent in later models than it was in the First Gens and early VMax's. My 2006 RSTD was an extreme example, with the windshield removed and BUB slip-ons installed, at 70 mph I could hear ONLY the clutch basket.....when I pulled into a driveway people would come over to ask what is wrong with my bike! Mine was improved significantly when Yamaha Canada finally ponied up a new "I" coded clutch basket and installed it. This knocked out about 85 or 90% of the noise. Changing to Amsoil made it even quieter, now it is there but is not an issue. One difference that I had, is that the "chirp" or "whine" was present when I was ON the throttle, it disappeared under deceleration......good luck with yours!
  22. In 1999 they brought out the 2nd Gen Venture, with the airbox behind the leg lowers, bigger carbs again, warmer cam etc. Only the Venture and Royal Star Tour Deluxe from 2005 on have the 97 horse engine. I think they made some"Standard" Royal Stars in 1999 also, those would hev been the 67 horse version.
  23. Yup I know about the slots in many Corbin seats, but not in this one. Here's a picture of the same seats on the previous owner's bike:
  24. I just bought a very slightly used set of the Corbin seats that Yamaha markets for my 2006 RSTD. They are called the "Comfort Cruise Solo Seat" and "Custom Cruise Tour Pillion" Does anyone know of a drivers backrest that will work with these? Or any rain covers? Any help is appreciated. Here's a link to the seats that I am talking about, I have the plainer ones with out studs: http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/pages/catalogs/products/26/801/2247/1/0/0/1/4/90/68/329/seats-backrests.aspx Thanks Bob LeDuc
