Venture or Tour Deluxe?
bobbyduck replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I bought the RSTD because I didn't think I wanted the fairing, stereo, tourpack etc. Even ran 1 season that way, camped, carried a lot of stuff, had a good time. Then over Christmas break in 2006 my wife and I were in Phoenix and rented a HD Ultra for 3 days. Upshot was we both liked the fairing, stereo, tourpak etc. So, see "Ultra Star" pics attached - cost more than a Venture but I wouldn't trade it for one.... -
I have a 2006 RSTD and installed the Baron's passenger boards. They have three different angles built in. I also think they must be further forward as I never used to beat up the back of my legs and now I do.... They look cool too!

Does whine drivr you nuts?
bobbyduck replied to eazyduzzit's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Good for you and here's wishing you the best. These are the best bike going in my opinion - chirp, whine, or not! -
The one I have is a 2006 model, it is some kind of plastic, I assume ABS. The 2006 and later have two sets of holes so the trunk can be moved by about an inch.... I am unable to find the posts / emails so far about the "flimsy" trunk, but it looks like is wasn't Lone Eagle, I found his from when I was deciding and I think my memory is incorrect....I'll keep looking.....

I was complaining about the exhaust popping on deceleration / shifting, and our local Venture mechanic (Mr. Venture in Calgary Alberta) asked if I was running regular or premium. When I told him I ran premium, he said that was half the problem. I switched to 87 Octane and he was right on the money. No change in mpg, just cheaper and the bike works better. I have since pulled an Aspen Classic camper trailer (~500 pounds) over 13000 km and no sign of pinging etc. on 87 pump gas. Recently on an easy stretch, 1 up, I got 42.6 miles per US gallon (51.1 per Imperial gallon, that sounds so much better!)....normal is more like 38 per U.S. Gallon...I do like to hear my BUBs :-)

Hi, You might want to contact Lone Eagle - I'm pretty sure it was him I talked to when I was deciding on a trunk - convinced me not to buy the ~$110 type that is constantly on sale on eBay. Whoever it was I chatted with had tried the trunk and it was so flimsy his wife felt like she would fall through it when accelerating! I'll sniff around for the old posts / email but it may have been before the crash.... I went with a Harley TourPak and love it...shown on attached thumbnail this past weekend with a T-Bag designed to fit it and stuffed with about 40 pounds of stuff. This trunk is strong! And there are a go-zillion accessories for it becasue for some reason I don't understand, they sell lots of Harleys...

Does whine drivr you nuts?
bobbyduck replied to eazyduzzit's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Mine started as an annoyance and by 4000 km was a screamer. I could hear the whine at 70 mph with windshield off and BUB slip-ons installed, over the wind and pipes. In fact I couldn't hear the pipes the whine was so loud. After 6 months of the worst factory response (outright lies, delaying tactics, trying to make me sound like the problem) I could have imagined, they finally put in an "I" basket under warranty and it fixed it by at least 85% - just a background noise for now. And yes its an awesome bike. Though I have "Venture Ultra-ized mine....." -
OIL?????? Whats Best???? What to use???
bobbyduck replied to Duke13's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Amsoil Amsoil Amsoil - have used in many bikes for many years and its good stuff -
Hello, As my clutch basket sound progressed, it did very similar to what you describe. It began as an annoyance and turned into a screamer. New "I" basket fixed it. Mostly. Does it match engine speed in 4th and 5th, or does it stay the same after shifting from 4th to 5th? If it matches engine speed, it's on the input side of the trans, probably clutch basket. If it matches road speed after shifting 4th to 5th, it's on the output side like drive shaft / pumpkin etc. Good Luck!

Air suspension pressure
bobbyduck replied to magnum-pei's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Another mod I did which is really awesome is the Racetech Gold Valve kit that includes stiffer springs and lowers the front 1 inch. With my short legs the 1 inch helps, and the new geometry is close to what is acheived by the "leveling link" that raises the rear by 1 inch. With it and the Works shock, tar snakes, chuck-holes, whatever ya got, we are having more fun now! Oh and the Avon Venoms, 130/90 in front. Totally different bike! -

Well I've only been riding 39 years but that's long enough to know that any suspension improvement equals a more fun and safer ride. At least that's what I think, and it works for me. -

I have to agree - I recently installed a Works Performance rear shock that they tailored to me with wife and trailer. It's awesome, way better than stock! And no air to add so it ends the debate with respect to the rear. I run 5 - 7 in the front, depending on load.... -

Don't know about any gauge in the toolkit, my RSTD didn't have one. But the bike is an entirely different and much more enjoyable ride with about 5 pounds in each of the two front forks and 25 or more in the one rear shock. Running 0-0-0 again after you have run with air, you'll wonder how you could have ever done without the air! You shouldn't use a tire pump though, get a suspension pump. I got one at Harley that looks like a big syringe and is accurate as low as 3 pounds and up past 57, it will work for front or rear. -

Progressive Fork Springs fixed my first Gen which had the same problem. Also it will handle like a completely new bike. I also added a Superbrace and WOW what a difference! That's my -
abnormal chirping sound
bobbyduck replied to sargergp's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yup that's the sound my clutch basket made. One test is, does it stay in synch with Engine RPMs or road speed? If it is relative to engine RPMs in more than one gear, it is most likely the clutch basket. If road speed, it's most likely drive-shaft..... Mine would mostly cease when I pulled the clutch in and let it coast, or when decelerating..... Oh and I also worked around Navy jets for 9 years...small world! -
I have the narrower Avon, 13000 Km now, about 8000 of it pulling a 500 pound camper trailer, it's a great setup. I am 5'6", 29.5 inch inseam, have lowered the front 1 inch with the Baron's/Racetech goldvalve kit that also has better springs... love it!

abnormal chirping sound
bobbyduck replied to sargergp's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hi, Mine was like you describe, very pronounced sound at about the same speeds. Yamaha did everything they could to convince myself and many others on this site that the design of the straight cut gear teeth on the clutch basket and it's mating transmission gear cause this as a "normal" condition. My dealer and I fought with the factory rep for 6 months and I also began to take steps to get the province of Alberta to step in... and finally the Yamaha Canada factory folks provided an "I" coded clutch basket under warranty. It diminished the sound by quite a bit, enough that it is no longer a major issue. I still hear it as a background sound but can't hear it at all at highway speeds. I suggest you read a lot of the threads on this site about this issue, take some choice postings if your dealer is reluctant to address it, and try to get Yamaha to rectify it by installing a better-fitted clutch basket. Your 2005 should still be under the 5-year unlimited mileage factory warranty. My understanding is that the "I"-coded baskets are polished about 1 micron furthetr so they may lessen an excessively tight fit. First they usually try to convince you it isn't a problem. In my case, it totally ruined the riding experience. It was so loud that at 70 mph, with the windshield removed and BUB slipons installed, I could hear only the chirp instead of the pipes and wind. People would come up to me in a parking lot to tell me something was wrong with my bike... Some XVZ V4s do it and some don't. I personally think that Yamaha has quit caring how carefully they fit the components and that their business strategy is to see if they can make you go away, rather than address their own internal quality issues. I could never get any explanation as to why the early Ventures / VMaxs in the mid-80s didn't seem to have this issue and now a noticeable percentage of the 2nd Gens do. In fact, the only attitude that the factory folks took with me was that I was a whiner that wanted them to fix a perfectly good machine.....and that chirp and all, there was no problem except me! Good luck! -
That's what I'm talkin' about!

I agree with you - first, I didn't mean to - found out when I left it open too long in 4th... and after I cleaned my drawers out it never ever happened again.... and second, I was 20 years younger. None of the events I relate were ever done within sight of anyone nor would they have endangered anyone but me! I am 90% law-abiding now at 57 years young and the other 10% is like 80 in a 75......

Well, I'll throw in my $0.02 worth. First, though I am now a Canadian resident I am an American citizen as well, spent my first 49 years in the states. I have lived in Florida, Georgia, California, Aridzona :-), Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and was born/raised in Missouri. I ride a customized 2006 Tour Deluxe with BUB sleepers, and also have a 170ish HP KZ1000J2 (1170) in the garage. I have owned a KZ1300 with a 1430 Turbo kit that would do a power wheelie at 125 MPH, a ZX11, a stepped-on VMax, a CBX and a stepped-on FXR over the years. I have been guilty of all of the subject infractions except for stoppies and improperly mounted license, though it has been quite a few years since I pulled the front wheel up on purpose. I promote LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES because I have seen the difference with my own eyes, but I detest wide open straight pipes because they are annoying and threaten our rights. Similarly, I detest the squidly types that pull all of these antics in neighborhoods / heavy traffic, because they are dangerous to everyone and they threaten our rights. As long as we have the V-twin types running pure straight pipes and the squidly types cutting up big time, we leave the door open for politicians to make points with everyday cage-driver by "finally doing something about it". Let's face it, both of those crowds cause a lot of irritation to a lot of people. There are a lot more everyday cage-drivers at the polls than there are motorcyclists. Politicians tend to notice such things. In this case, the squidly types have pushed it far enough that action was taken. Regardless of how we each feel about it, this threatens us all. What's next? Is there an answer? I dunno. Try to talk to a hard-core V-twin rider with straight pipes or a hard-core squid sometime....it's somewhere between a waste of time and a danger to someone's health. The best chance we have is for organizations like the AMA and ABATE to step up in Tallahassee ASAP (with a lot of support) to challenge the legality of targetting a minority with discriminatory laws. If this trend continues and any politicians feel that elections could be had this way, we will see much more of it and will hearken back to the days when they tried to make "sport-bikes" totally illegal. We succeeded in the 80s by showing a unified voting block of some significance with a well-sponsored lobby. If a responsible group such as the AMA or ABATE will mount a campaign against this, I'll send a check. Any better ideas?

I haven't used an Advanced Glass Mat battery such as the Odyssey yet - but have heard enough that I will buy one when my 2006 OEM battery bites the dust. The XS650 crowd have been using them for quite awhile, purchased out of MikeXS. Trust me when I say that the XS650 is a good stress tester! I have ridden them constantly from 1974 to 2005 and them puppies VIBRATE! Plus they have even worse chronic alternator issues than do our beloved V4s.... I figure if that bunch is having good luck, I'm in! Added feature is zero leakage, zero maintenance.....

Bub Slip ons
bobbyduck replied to roadwarrior's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have had the BUB slip-ons, K&N air filters, and Dyna 3000 set on curve 2 for two seasons now with no rejetting. I got the odd pop on shift until a good carb sync was done, none after that. AIS is not plugged. I pull an Aspen Classic tent trailer (about 500 lbs loaded) and have had no lean condition symptoms. Also gas mileage did not suffer, actually a slight improvement. I am at 3500 feet so if you are nearer to sea level you may not have the same results. Higher altitude effectively richens the mixture due less air density. Good Luck! -
I have a Diamond R hitch and pull an Aspen Classic - loaded about 525 pounds, tongue weight around 50 pounds. 10000 km+ over two seasons, trouble-free.....

loudest cheapest slip on pipes
bobbyduck replied to BLUERIDGEBORN's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I always had politically correct bikes - and used to dodge snowbirds in Mesa Arizona on a daily basis. Then I bought a VMax with a V&H pipe and suddenly all the cars were parting like the Red Sea! Everything I have owned since then makes enough noise that I can be heard. My 2006 RSTD has BUB slip-ons that aren't real annoying but make one's presence felt....and even my neighbor who works nights and sleeps days says he likes them and they don't bother him
