  1. Anyone from the VR Group headed to Rolling Thunder were gonna be staying in Fredrick, MD on Saturday and Sunday nights.
  2. Let me state up front that I am not a practicing Christian, nor do I believe in the power of prayer. However, I have a friend who is a very devout Christian, and I know he would appreciate your putting in a good work for him with the powers that be. He was returning home late a few nights ago and was involved in a single vehicle accident. He damaged a couple of disks and will be laid up for a few weeks. Maybe longer. SO, if you are so inclined..... Thanks much
  3. I ain't got enough to do so tonight I went back to school. Started a welding class. All types of welding. Two nights a week. Work out three nights a week. I might get a job!!
  4. Here it is, March 2, 2012. We just completed 2 months of the year and this morning I got an email from Choice Hotels congratulating me on achieving Diamond Elite Status for this year. I've been a Diamond Elite member for a lot of years but you have to re-qualify every year. That is the top level of their membership program and I think you achieve it at 40 nights. I am not bragging about it....I'm really just TIRED of being gone so much. It doesn't even include my last 8 or 10 nights on the road and yes, I'm writing this from another hotel room. I know that I am fortunate to have a job at a time when so many are out of work and I am indeed thankful for that.
  5. We just got back from a week long bike trip down to Nashville. Took our time going down and back staying off the interstates as much as possible. Saw some beautiful country, fall colours and some great country music shows. We went to the Grand Ole Opry both Friday and Saturday nights and hit the down town bars Thursday night and Sunday afternoon. And the weather was perfect. Not a drop of rain all week. Bonus!
  6. Here in East Tennessee it was in the upper 50's today. Really turned out to be a great day to ride a while. I had to bundle up a bit but it was well worth it to get out on 'The Beast' and enjoy the feeling of the open road. After several nights of tempertures in the teens today was a welcome relief and just getting out for a while makes all the difference in the world. Can wait for spring time, I'm ready to do some riding. :biker:Did any of you get to ride today????
  7. OK, it is my best guess that I will ride to Oberlin, OH for MD. I can leave either Thursday or Friday and return Saturday night or Sunday. If you're near me and would like a companion for the ride let me know. Probably up I65 and I71. I'll probably spend the night(s) a little north in Avon. 843 mapquest miles for me which is just a leisurely cruise.
  8. This is what old men do on friday nights.....HEAD WRAPS FOR THE STOCKINGS GOING OUT IN THE AM....
  9. Just spent 3 nights in a cabin in Pigeon Forge. Tonight were in a cabin at the KOA East in Asheville. We spent a couple hours in Cherokee before heading north up the Blue Ridge Parkway. We had planned the next 3 nights to be a camping adventure tent style up the parkway. Just had a hard rain here and all the rain at night has changed my mine.MaMamo is rarely in a good mood dry so don't get her wet.We got the kids and the dog along next stop Rocky Knob Virginia up the parkway about 225 miles north.Later

    Where do you sleep?

I may have not found the obvious but I do need some info on where you stay on extended trips. Because I am still the primary care-giver for my 91 year old mother, overnight bike trips are out of the question. However, when she passes I am planning on an extended (multi-month) trip through the western USA, travelling back roads and visiting places I have never taken the time to see before. This leads me to the question: What to do about lodging? Yes, I could stay at motels but averaging $75/night that is $2250/month. Manageable, but not how I want to spend my limited retirement funds. Yes, I could buy one of the trailers/pop-up campers but that is not something I want to haul behind me. And yes, I could mooch off a few friends when available, but that is not something I am wild about doing either. So, that appears to leave 'camping' or at least some version of it as so many of you have referenced. Can anyone point me to a thread, resource, or just your advice on the details of how this works? Keep in mind this all new to me and I am not an experienced camper. (When I used to take extended trips (before care-giving) in an RV, I would pull into Interstate rest stops 3-4 nights and then an RV Park one night to get a quiet night's sleep. Somehow pulling off the road and sleeping on the ground doesn't sound all that appealing to my 68 year old carcass. I hope I am not asking a stupid or obvious question. I just haven't a clue as to how you folks do extended trips. Thanks, Oldsalt
  11. Anyone traveling in Southern Ohio, this weekend? One of the biggest Oktoberfests in the nation is going on in downtown CIncinnati. There is food, Beer, German music and dancing. Ron and I will probably be there at least two nights. It really is fun. Of course, the chicken dance will be very popular. Yama Mama
  12. I asked the previous owner. He isn't sure whether the battery has been replaced or not. If not, it is 9 yrs old and I have been having battery issues. The 3 nights I put it on the battery tender. When I went to check on it the next morning, it was still red. Just before I left to go to work it turned green. That is 12+ hrs it needed to charge the battery. W/ my previous bike, it was a couple hours and it was charged on a 5 yr old battery. 2 nights ago, I put it on the charger and it was green by the morning. Last night, I put it on the charger and still red this morning. So assumming it is the original battery, I rode in this morning and was pretty much dying just before I pulled into the parking spot. Dealer said battery prices just went up. Quoted me $145. Online OEM says around $101. Does anyone know of any alternates? Can you pick up the same battery at places like Autozone? Thanks. Jerry
