I have gone up against a Vrod, with a 1st gen. Now yours Gary, is not a normal 1st gen, but a relatively stock one didn't have a chance. I got beat pretty badly, they are vicious off the line and run up the hp pretty quickly....but what do you expect from a motor that was built by Porsche
-
Thats one of the best examples of how a 1st gen should perform. I know Dennis tweaked it perfect and it was one of the scary fast ones, it ran that good. Been thinking about Vicki and him for some time now. Glad to see there still about and kicking, hopefully still enjoying that Miata they bough a few years back. if you see him again, tell him we say howdy from Texas

I have heard both sides of the story with Dyna Beads, some claim it's better than sliced bread, others hated it and went back to hanging weights. I personally have never used it, I may one day just to be able to compare apples to apples. Both posters before me here have mentioned some good points, and ones I would agree with and check. I could be wrong, but I dont think the rake for the sidecar would screw with it that much, I may be wrong, but if it didn't do it with the hack on, probably not betting it's doing it without. I would make sure the tire is absolutely seated, put good old fashioned weights back on it and see how it plays out. If it's good, and you want to play with the Dyna Beads again, take the weights off and dump in the beads...

Enjoy the new ride, yamaha will continue to loose the touring market share until they create a new touring platform. There are many on this site that have decided not to buy another yamaha because of it

Let us know the dates and we'll head over there....and perhaps we we'll have a cheesecake with us, what kind are you thinking of?
-
Glad to hear that it worked out, St. Judes..... I'd love to be there, we'll have to play it by ear
-
Hey I have an idea....why dont you come to TEXAS!
-
Les, If someone other than yourself had the carb bank off from the top portion of the intake manifolds, they might not be all the way on. I have taken several carb banks completely off 1st gens and you really have to put some downward pressure into push them down onto the tops of the manifolds for them to completely engage. I dont have picks of it, but there is a shelf on the bottom of all 4 of the carbs, that when it's installed properly will sit flush on top of the carb manifolds. I have fixed many of them where the previous owner didn't have them pushed down all the way. If this isn't right it will screw all sorts of things up. Hopefully Dingy will see this thread and have pics of a set of carbs sitting correctly (he has more pics of naked 1st gens than Carters got Little Liver pills)

You'll get there bro, I still remember celebrating your Bday with you in '07 at the Ft. Collins Rally and the '08 Kitchener Rally...that was cool

Hey...where did you locate that radio fuse at?
-
I was wondering how you 2 came along with it, glad y'all got it on the run. Great talking with you both and good to see (hear) Bubbas still kicking BTW....what was the culprit with the idle not coming down

I dont have hard core facts, but I have used B12 Chemtool for many years with good results. Seafoam works good, but when they tripled the price of it, I decided that I would go back to B12. It's not like you are using either of them every fill up, once every couple of months for good measure and if your having issues....

Were looking forward to having you folks here Steve. Dont be shy about asking for help if you need it....San Antonio is only a 4 hour trip for us north of Houston

Redneck is right on the money, you will either instinctively steer into the way the bike is sliding to try and counter steer it, or you'll panic and the rest is in Gods hands. I can tell you one thing from surviving a rear tire blowout at 75 mph.....you have tenths of seconds to react, and I would like to think that I came off the throttle, but it happens so fast that you more than likely wont remember if you did or not. Rick, Remember about 5 years ago when Swifty was with Brad and Rhonda and lost his rear tire on his '86? he was pulling a trailer too. I believe that the trailer acts as an absorber so the rear of the bike doesn't get too far out during the swing. I remembered that if I had another 500 ft of pavement in front of me on my crash that I might have pulled it off. Once my front tire his the gravel on the side of the road I had zero control and the bike did what it wanted (or what thrust and gravity) wanted it to. Very sad to hear of this couple and the wife not making it
-
I'll speak only for myself, but I know my words will fit for many here. I have always jumped right in and fixed issues as they arose. Pretty much all my experience on these bikes, both 1st and 2nd gens have been because I broke it and it needed to be fixed. Fortunately, I have pretty good mechanical skills as I have been making a living at it for 30 years. This is an awesome site as many folks are very open to helping others overcome issues. I know guys that came to this site and didn't hardly have any mechanical skills. I have watched them blossom into quite capable mechanics on these machines, and do fairly major repairs or changeovers. It's amazing what a little support and some self confidence boosting can do to someone. It's a very cool place and you will not find another place like this on the web

Where best to post a question about a V-Star 1100 Clutch?
Squidley replied to Semi-retired's topic in General Tech Talk
If it's a hydraulic clutch, then it will be very similar to what is in the Ventures. Sounds like perhaps the spring might be a bit weak. If it's a cable clutch, then it might need a bit of adjusting. If i get a chance I'll see if the clutch is hydraulic or cable. -
Rick, All good advise here, if you have the means, or an extra clutch spring, I would do a double spring on the clutch. Do a complete fluid change as this will help too. You can do the clutch in about 30 minutes on the sidestand when you get to NY....
