  1. WOW - it sounds like it was your lucky day! Glad to hear that the damage was minor and, most importantly, that no one was hurt. Good thing those fellow bikers gathered 'round to lend a hand.
  2. Sorry to hear about the accident. At least your loved ones walked (& hobbled) away from it! Make sure to find out when the hearing on the stop sign ticket is scheduled, as your wife & sis-in-law should be there as witnesses -- and so the judge can see the damage this knucklehead kid caused. Even though it's a minor offense, a conviction will eliminate the possibility of his insurance company fighting on paying out the claim. Good luck & speedy recovery to all!
  3. wasabe58: You're right about checking the law... in Pennsylvania using headsets/earbuds even in one ear is illegal for music. It's ok for communications purposes, but that's limited to one ear only. Do what you wish, but I made the decision to use the earbuds (both ears) for music anyway.... knowing that I was risking a ticket. I ran the wire up under my t-shirt to keep the wire from flapping in the wind and partly to hide them from view. Know your opitons, be aware of the laws and the risks, act like an adult and be prepared to accept the consequences if a decision turns out to be the wrong one.
  4. Hulk: the speaker upgrade is a good mod for the RSV, but he has a RSTD. Paiscool: the mp3 player with ear buds is a good suggestion. I did that for years with several bikes before getting my RSV. I bought a small camera case so I could hold my mp3 player on my belt while riding. You'll probably have to go through a few different sets of ear buds before you find a set that works for you (comfort & sound quality). I recommend ones with little foam cones, as they provide a good seal to insulate against road noise without sacrificing comfort. I think Bose makes a decent set - I'll have to see if I can dig out the ones I used.
  5. ..and I had to go to work today. It's a shame that work gets in the way of the good things. It was a nice sunny day here in southeastern PA.
  6. Do you find they get out of sync in 2 months? If so, by much?
  7. My rear shock was holding air fine, but was leaking oil. Just check up under the boot like Eck advises above. Got it replaced under warranty without any trouble.
  8. Sure is a nice looking bike & matching trailer!
  9. It looks like you had a late night, but a productive one. Good job on the repairs. Hope you can get some riding time in (minus the ditch) soon.
  10. Here you go.... http://www.freewebsitetemplates.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1405&stc=1&d=1241768450
  11. I had the broken bracket on the inside of my left lower cowling... fixed it with JB Weld. It has been holding strong for almost 3,000 miles. Get some JB Weld at Wally-World, K-Mart, local hardware store, etc. http://www.jbweld.net/products/jbweld.php
  12. +1 for Pledge... been using it on my bikes for the past 20 years with great results. With the silicones it contains, the cleaning process leaves a slick surface (so fewer things stick next time) and a deep shine. I use it on everything except for the seat. Just spray it on a microfiber towel and wipe down. For tough spots, like your dried on bugs, spray directly on, let it sit for 2-3 minutes, then wipe off. Just don't get one of the new "furniture moistirizing" varieties, as they contain oil that will make a smeared mess of things. I prefer the "dust & allergy" variety.
  13. My group (Pennsylvania-X) rolled into the Bluke Knights Convention in Louisville, KY today. I counted about ten other RSVs during a walk around the motorcycle parking lot this evening. My question: is anyone from the VR group also at the BK convention?
  14. Mine is at the dealership now, waiting for the replacement shock to arrive on Thursday and be installed. Fortunately, my '06 is still under warranty so price is not an issue for me. Here's a [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=20363]thread that discusses pricing[/ame]. From looking around here, it seems that the Works Progressive Shock is about the only viable aftermark shock for the RSV. Good luck with yours!
  15. Thanks for the info. I like the look of the total replacement, but have never seen them up close and in person. Sooooo..... now I have another project for the winter!
  16. I didn't replace my front reflectors, rather I added LEDs to the reflectors (need to keep the reflectors to pass annual state inspection). Anyway, check [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36949]this thread[/ame] for pics of running the wires along the brake lines, but completely hidden using black tubing.
  17. If your phone supports it, the phone should automatically try to send the address book, call logs and status (battery & network strength) to the Zumo. Depending on the size of your address book, it can take a while to transfer. I have about 750 contacts and it takes about 10 minutes to transfer via bluetooth. I have had some occasions where the contacts did not show up on the Zumo and I had to force a re-send. With my BlackBerry I can go into the Bluetooth options and force it to "transfer contacts" with just a few clicks. As the recipient device, the Zumo does nothing more than wait for data and/or calls to come to it. The re-send must be initiated from your phone.
  18. Thanks, Wayne. I'll be trying it out after work today.
  19. Sorry.... I was posting from (my apparently not so good) memory. The site is http://www.takitwithme.com (no e on take). Still curious about getting routes transfered from Mapquest, if anyone has any info.
  20. I've used takeitwithme.com to load wayopints onto my zumo 550 from Google maps, but have not transfered routes from Mapquest. Can you provide some details, links and/or instructions as it would be most helpful. Thanks, in advance!
  21. +1 for the HJC AC-3. Very comfortable. Can use the included visor (similar to the Shoei visor pictured in Mariner's post) or swap the visor out for a face shield - without tools. It's also one of the very few non-full-face helmets with the Snell certification.
  22. ...and make sure you'll still pass you're state's vehicle inspection without the reflectors (if Ohio has inspections). Here in PA, reflectors are required to pass the annual inspection. Notwithstanding the inspection regulations, I personally don't want some idiot running into my parked bike because they didn't see it in the dark with nothing reflecting back -- just my opinion, I know many here have replaced the reflectors. So I installed amber LEDs along with the front reflectors. Here's a [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36949]thread with some pictures[/ame]. Good luck & post some pictures when you're finished.
  23. Looks good! I think I'll be in the market for a hitch & trailer during the off-season.
  24. I've used countless cans of Pledge Clean & Dust over the years... no oil, no wax. It's the silicones that keep the dust, bugs & grime from sticking. Click to see the MSDS (as a PDF file).
  25. The round vents you're looking for are called "Snap Air Vents." Using info found on this forum, I purchased them from Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. Click here to see the vents for sale on the Aircraft Spruce site; you want part # CC-3251.
