  2. I installed a firestick antenna. To tune it I disconnected the cable from the antenna that goes to the radio and hooked it to the SWR meter so I have the cable running from the radio to the SWR meter. I then took the jumper cable that came with the SWR meter and hooked it to the SWR meter ANT connection and then to the antenna. Following the SWR meter instructions I then set the switch on the SWR meter to FWD. I then pushed the PTT button on the bike . The directions say to adjust the meter until it hits the set on the fare right of the meter. When I turn the knob all the way to adjust the needle it doesn't even move up to the 1.5 mark. A long ways from the SET mark. What am I doing wrong or does my CB not work. Any advise would be appreciated Thanks Norm
  3. Last fall I picked up a Kawasaki KZ440A LTD off Craigslist for $200. The previous owner was tired of paying someone to keep fixing it and was frustrated at his inability to get it running. The clutch wasn’t working and it wouldn’t idle. The airbox was missing but all the electrical items worked (except the horn). He had just put new tires on it and had the brakes done – including having the fluid changed. I put it on a trailer and dragged it home to join my other project bikes in the workshop. While my Dad was here over Easter, we took apart the clutch and found the adjustment mechanism had been adjusted beyond its limit and a nut had fallen off. We put it back together and the clutch works great. I looked at the horn and one of the connectors had fallen off. Put it back on and it now works. Found an airbox (the LTD airbox is rare to find in one piece) at a boneyard in Oklahoma. It had the mounting tab broken off but still costs $70. A complete airbox was going for $140 minimum on Ebay, so I bought this one and repaired it. Got it to start, but it wouldn’t run worth a darn. Tore off the carbs and took them apart. They were fairly clean, but the diaphragms were ripped. Found a company that made and sold new diaphragms and purchased a set for $29 each (plus shipping - $67 total). Installed them, put the carbs back together and put them on the bike. Ran better, but not well. Downloaded a shop manual for the bike from a KZ forum and went to work tuning the carbs. Checked the float height (they were spot on), drilled out the covers over the mixture screws and set them to the proper setting. Set the valve gaps in the engine (they weren’t too far off). BTW, this is the easiest bike to set valve gaps I have ever seen – nice design. Set up an auxiliary fuel supply in a water bottle, hooked up the Morgan Carbtune, and sync’d the carbs (has to be done with the tank off). Not too far off, but enough to cause problems. When I went to put it all back together, I noticed the previous owner had not hooked up the vacuum hoses to the right locations and didn’t have one of the vacuum ports capped as it should be. Just happen to have a selection of rubber caps in the shop and found one that fit. Bought a new battery since the old one was 11 years old and didn’t like holding a charge. Took the fairing off an old Vulcan and put it on this bike. Fits great. Turned the rear shocks up to the maximum spring rate setting to handle my fat butt on it. Tightened the chain and lubed it. Once I got all this done, I put the tank back on, hit the starter and it fired right up. It now idles smoothly at 1200 RPM and runs beautifully up to at least 60 MPH. No plates on it so I was only running around the immediate area. This is going to be a fun bike for the boys to ride. A little small for me to travel any distance on, but just fine for pounding around town. Attached are some pictures. Notice the tires. They both still have the color stripe around the tread. Can’t be 100 miles on them. They’re worth what I paid for the bike. Total cost - $200 purchase, $70 airbox, $67 diaphragms, $5 sparkplugs, $50 battery, $4 sheet of lawn mower air cleaner material (cut to shape to fit the airbox), $4 oil filter, various hardware (replaced all removed Phillips head screws with cap head equivalents) about $10 = $410.00 1 down, 2 to go. Suzuki 750 is next.
  4. I am rebuilding a set of forks on my 83 Venture.I have a damaged fork tube(scratched).I bought a set off Ebay but the caliper mounts are different. My question is,can I use the tubes off the newer forks and the bottoms off the old forks? They look very simmilar.I am also planning on using all the parts from the new forks. When I took the tubes out I broke a piece off the washer on the inside of the one tube.It is the one that doesnt come out.90 percent of the washer is still there. Can I still use it?
  5. Has anyone installed a set of hand shields on an RSV? How do they look, how do you like them? I have a set on my Valkyrie and especially like the way they keep the rain off my hands. My concern with the RSV is that the windshield and fairing are so much larger that the hand shields would cut almost all the air flow off, could get real hot in the summer. Anyway, here's the kind of thing I'm talking about.. http://shop.nationalcycle.com/perl/cycle/N5503? Thanks
  6. Changed out my stock, squeaky, grindy, noisy, weak brake pad's to a new set of EBC's,All I can say is WOW! what a difference. These things are great.
  7. If anybody is interested, I got the following message from Eddie. I put a new set of Avons on my bike. The ones I took off have about 8000 on them . They are in good enough shape for someone who might be down on there luck and can use a set. Let me know if you get wind of anyone. I can send them to them or to you and maybe we can give them to someone at MD. Please send him a PM if you are interested. His username is ...uh...Eddie.
  8. Hello, After four years not running I have scraped together enough time and money to get my 84 Royale running if I buy one set of carb gaskets and cut the rest by hand. (3 kids in college) I am wondering were I might get the best price on a single set of carb gaskets *and* a single vacuum piston (buddy who is helping called it a 'slider'). Thanks very much. Mitch & Kim Graves 118 S Fillmore St Edwardsville IL 62025
  9. Hello Everyone: I am trying to help another local rider. Does anyone have a set of bar end weights that were on a RSTD? Thanks....
  10. I'm thinking of returning the Show Chrome headsets and going with the Scala Q2's. Does anyone know how long the rechargeable batteries last before you have to replace them? How does the intercom feature compare with headsets wired directly through the bike's intercom? As some of you may know if you've read my earlier posts, I've been getting interference on the wired set. I'm pretty sure that I can solve the problem (thanks to you guys and the great advice), but if I can get the Q2's for the same price as the wired set, maybe that would be a better option? Cheers!
  11. Does anyone have a set of Bubs they are looking to sell? I have a set of harley slash cuts with clamps and brackets that may be for sale.
  12. So i tried looking around and didn't come up with much, what options are out there for exhaust? I would prefer slipons but would not be opposed to modifying the stock exhaust if there are not better options. I just want to get some sound out of it, not too much but that v4 should sound great with the right set of pipes!!!
  13. OK, I'm thinkin' since both of the '83's sight glasses in the OEM master reserves are one step above swiss cheese I'd either replace them with another set of OEMs, or.... replace them with a set of 2ndGen masters and levers... which I have already. Has anyone ever comtimplated doing this, or possibly even done it?? Can anyone think of a reason why not?? Any input would be appreciated.... Thanks..
  14. Hi All Ive got a 83 VR it did not come with a CB so I bought one only to find out I have the wrong wireing harness. Just woundering if any of you elect wizards could tell me how to set this up so it goes throuh the intercom system? I did get the push to talk button. I think the CB came off a 96 vr. Thanks Bull463
  15. Bought a new 2009 RSV in June of 09 off the showroom floor. It ran OK but felt no where near the power I had when I rode my 06 RSV. I took it in the summer of 2010 and asked the dealer about low power. They shimmed the carbs and I rode off and it still lacked the power I had in the 2006. I was gone away most last year with work and didn't ride much. This year while in an email conversation with a fellow VentureRider in Canada he suggested a set of K&N filters. I ordered a set and installed them this week I can't believe the difference! It's unbelievable a set of air filters will make it run stronger, I knew I had a carb problem but never dreamed the stock air filters were holding back that much air. I don't know if others will benefit from this simple upgrade but I couldn't be happier and highly recommend K&N filters. Thanks Randy
  16. Hey Nj . is there a member group meeting that i can be a part of or can we set up a date for a few of our members to meet and greet and enjoy the beauty that is the ROyal star. I live in central jersey maybe once we get a few Nj people chiming in we can set up a date. jose 1996 RS
  17. Looking for a set of fairing eyebrows.
  18. I'm looking to purchase a GOOD set of snapring pliers. Any suggestions? I bought a set from Sears when I did maintenance on the rear hub...and they were JUNK (IMHO). Getting ready to put on another rear tire, so I thought I would lube the hub/pins again since I'm 3/4 of the way there anyway...seems like these two items should go together!!! As always...thanks for the suggestions/comments!
  19. How do you set the buttons on the radio on a 1985 Venture royal to local stations? Mike Smegielski Waterbury, CT
  20. Ok, I have started the tear down of the spare engine that I got when I bought the 85. I was told that this 83 engine had only 30,000 miles on it and after spitting the case, I really do believe it may be true. There is no doubt in my mind that the engine had never been apart since new. One of the first things I wanted to see was what the gear dogs looked like on 2nd gear. I found that they had no noticeable wear at all. That was a good sign. Now, one thing that did surprise me was that the dogs on 2nd gear appeared and measured to be slightly undercut . I knew that later year 1st gens were undercut slightly, but I had never heard the 83's were. But, I have never looked at an 83 that did not already have a problem of being worn. The second issue that does give me some concern is not only did Yamaha change the gear diameters and number of teeth, but they also changed the width of some of the gears, but it appears to be only in the gear teeth area, but not the width where it is on the shaft. In setting the gearsets beside each other, and I am actually comparing an 86 set with the 02 set, you can see the difference. So far it does look like that the gears will line up with the proper fork placement. The next step will be to put the 02 set in place and set the bottom back on with the forks in place and see if it shifts thru the gears ok and see if everything lines up. I really do hope this is a viable option for the 1st gens, not only as a 2nd gear fix, but I want to have wider spaced gear ratios like the 2nd gens have. With also adding the V-Max rearend, 1st and 2nd gear will be slightly lower, 3rd and 4th will be about the same and 5th gear will be higher. On the pictures, you can see where the 2nd gear dogs have no obvious wear and you can also see the difference in the gear widths. The last picture is with the bottom off the 83 engine with the original gears. RandyA
  21. My 2008 came with visors on the headlight and the turnsignals/driving lights. I never have liked the look. Was the first thing I changed. Anyone want a set to put to use? I don't want to sell, just a thanks for the answers received already. Frank
  22. I am looking for a set of Handlebar risers for my RSV. I really only want 1 inch ones but will take what I can find. Anybody out there got any they are willing to sell?
  23. Last year I installed a set of Jardine Chromed forward controls on my 96 royal star. Although I really enjoy the looks of them on the bike, I'm just not comfortable using them. I'm stretched out just a little too much for my 5'8" fatman frame.....and for myself, it's just not comfortable enough to continue using them. I'm going to put the regular Yamaha floorboards, shifter and brake systems back on...returning that part of the bike to stock. So...when I have a chance to dig the bike out of the backyard shed....the ground is still way too soft to get the bike out....I'll post some pics of them on the bike, and put them up for sale. I'll be asking $300 plus actual shipping costs. They are mint, I only put on about 600 miles on that bike last year. Thought I'd post this up in case someone else is thinking of installing a set on their royal star, they list for $700 new. Here's a couple of pics when I installed them. gunk:confused24:
  24. I'm looking at buying an '05 black/rasberry RSTD. Thanks to the bike not currently being in rideable shape, I'm having to figure on putting some not so few bucks into it to getting it back on the road. But I'm also looking ahead. I'd like to put some kind of system on the bike that will enable me to listen to my tunes as well as communicate with my RSV riding buddies. I will not be mounting speakers on the bike, headset use only. I'm trying to see what options are available and if there are other ways to do this than something like the J&M cb/radio system. I've been looking on eBay and seeing what some of the online suppliers have but not having dealt with this kind of set up before [mp3 and a set of earphones while on the Wee Beastie], I'm not sure what would work best. I have been looking for a RSV but if I can get it at the right price, this RSTD might just end up being something of a steal, even with the extra cash I'll have to put into it over and above the purchase price. As always, all help gratefully appreciated!!
  25. Carb sync question? Now before yesterday I haven't done it, and found it to be really easy with the carbtune First experience with that too, great product. Now for the question of the day. Not having a tach, but a 9/8's deaf ear,,, I set the idle with the idle set on the right side to what I thought was or felt like 1000R's +- of course. Preceded with the sync, which went well. During one of the rev-up blips I noticed that the tubes would rise to the top, and stop at about 3/4, then fall back to where they were. So just for the heck of it I held what I thought was between 2500 & 300 and looked at the carbtune. It was rock steady, and indicated that #3 & #4 were a bit higher than the left side ??? ( I was having a little trouble getting them together ) So I run the set up to about that level of RPM's. Then adjusted the right side, and resync'd the four to flat. Took about 1 min for that. Dropped it back down to 1000+- and did the Blip, several times, and they were flat and even. Any thought here on that. It ran well for the test ride, but it was seemingly running well before the sync, and after I got all 4 hitting again.
