day started out good then?
dingy replied to oldgoat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
James, I sent you my used 4 water jacket plugs. This is not something hard to change, so if these used ones leak, you aren't out much in the way of labor. Tracking # 9101128882300686633027 usps.com Sent to the Water St address, hope you haven't moved. I would only change the leaking one(s). Leave well enough alone on the others since these are used plugs. First picture shows location of cover plate and retaining screw. There is one of these on each cylinder. Use an impact driver with a very large Phillips bit to temove screw. They do tend to be tight. Behind cover will look like picture #2. Plug is not in place in this picture. It goes in the large lower hole. Use a spark plug with the end cap removed, it will thread into the old plug and allow it to be pulled out. Radiator fluid will start running out, but not all of it. Do this on center stand and you will be OK, just will need to top radiator off. To get radiator cap to come loose, I think you have to loosen chrome cover on side. There is a tab on radiator cap that engages one of the covers, don't remember which one. My bike isn't back together to that point to check. Gary -
how much fork oil
dingy replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe in addition to what Snag said, this measurement is with the forks fully collapsed. Forks extended would be different. Gary -
Oh let's don't start with the cat hurting thing again. This subject is right up there with political and religious stuff. Happened about 6 months ago. Gary

Aftermarket TCI available!
dingy replied to tvking63's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Andrew, If you get an update from Ignitech on the Vboost or anything for that matter, please post it here or email it to me and I will get it posted. Integrating the VBoost with the TCI is very interesting to me. With the Ignitech TCI we can control when the boost starts to open and when it reaches wide open with 10 steps of RPM input. I know you are a VMax owner, but there is a lot of information on this site that is directly related to the VMaxs. Worth 12 dollars a year. Gary -
Below is a cut & paste of the info I have regarding the company I got the crystals from. I have had my brake master in since last spring. Crystal is still very clear and no leaks. The one issue I had was some softening of the clutch side epoxy where it was on to thick. This new idea for an adhesive may work better. I used 17.5 mm crystals x 2mm thick I did not hone the bores as I couldn't find a hone that would fit . Gary Company name is: Esslinger & Company http://www.esslinger.com/ Jewelers Glue Vigor Jeweler's Epoxy 12.0451 1 $3.95 $3.95 Watch Crystal Round Mineral Glass Crystal x 2.5MM Thick MM / Diameter : 17.5 201250 3 $2.95 $8.85 Subtotal: $12.80 Shipping & Handling: $8.30 Tax: $0.00 Order Total: $21.10

This really isn't political in my opinion, Truth Sucks. Closest thing to political could be the Royal Family stab, and that is dependent on who is in there, few years back it would have still been true. Gary

1984 venture fuel pressure switch
dingy replied to dannodude's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well it is something like that. I was close. I am on Percocets for a blown out disc in my back. Hard to type and stay in chair. Let alone be right. !! Gary -

1984 venture fuel pressure switch
dingy replied to dannodude's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The fuel pump relay on these bikes is special. Few pictures below of the insides. 1st is of an 84-93 bike, second one is from an 83. Most of circuitry is to get it to drop out 5 seconds after power is removed I think. Gary -
1984 venture fuel pressure switch
dingy replied to dannodude's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Attached is a picture of what a fuel pump looks like on an 83, yours would have been almost the same. There is a pressure switch built into the fuel pump. It is referred to as a cutoff switch in the service manual. Service manual pages attached for the fuel pump, this is from 86-93 manual, same as the 84. Gary -
V-Max final pinion galling.
dingy replied to Condor's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Here are pictures of the gear from my 1200 transmission I mentioned above. Somewhat same condition as what pegscapper said about the ring & pinion set, the wear is not on all the teeth. V-Max final pinion galling.
dingy replied to Condor's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I don't know if you have been following Wizard765 transmission troubles, but anyway. I gave him a pair of gears from my 1200 tranny. I didn't want to sell the whole tranny because one of the gear faces had similar galling to what you are showing here. Not as bad but some surface degradation on one gears tooth faces. The tranny never had problems, but I didn't want to take money from someone for a flawed set of gears. The pair that wizard got were unblemished in my opinion or I wouldn't have even given them away. I added three LED lights to mine, in addition to the dash indicator. I don't have to look down and refocus on dash to know gear I am in. Even though 2nd & 4th don't have lights, if there is no lite on, I know difference between those two right away. It is nice once I got use to it. I have a lite for 1,3 & 5 gear mounted under visor on dash. I had a different version of this on my 83 instrument cluster, but went with this when I upgraded. Light isn't nearly as bright as it appears in picture. Not to bright at nite even. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT0291.jpg

Glowing Exhaust Headers
dingy replied to twigg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The reason a rich condition runs cooler than a lean condition is that the heat is carried away in the exhaust in the form of unburnt fuel molecules. In a lean condition the heat generated is absorbed by the surrounding structure (headers, pipes etc.). The exhaust gases is not as conductive to the transfer of the heat energy. I have no real proof of this, just something I learned at some point. Gary -

James, Got your PM. This is about best picture I can find at this point. Back is causing a bunch of pain. See the cover at bottom left, It is the one with black stripes on it and rusty looking screw. Remove screw and under this cover there is a black plug that may be leaking anti freeze. Gary -
Below are how the two master cylinders compare numerically. 14 mm = .9544 sq. inches surface area. 5/8" = 1.2762 sq. inches surface area. When looking at a hydraulic brakes, there are two sides of the system. The driving side (the master cylinder) and the driven side. (the calipers). The 14mm M/C will provide more force against the calipers, but it will in turn be able to move them less distance, due to lower flow output. Where the less flow becomes a problem is when a 2 piston caliper is replaced with a 4 piston caliper. The 4 piston caliper takes more volume to displace the 4 pistons. The smaller the master cylinder bore, the higher the imparted pressure on the driven side, this is considering the same input from the brake lever on the end of the master cylinder piston. (this is the leverage part of the equation). This smaller diameter creates less volume though. Below is a drawing detailing the two components of a braking system hydraulic circuit. There is also attached a spreadsheet which shows comparisons for the MKI's, MKII's, RSV, 2003 FJR & R6 (not sure of year) brake systems. dingy replied to oldgoat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
James, Did you find your leak yet? I have a couple of used but reusable 'freeze plugs'. I replaced them on my bike this winter. If you want them, I'll send them to you. I already got your address. Let me know. Gary -
Glowing Exhaust Headers
dingy replied to twigg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Are they both glowing? Equally? Are they glowing after hard run or just at idle? If they are doing it at idle, just for something to try, back out the rear mixture screws a turn. Running lean is what causes excess heat. Maybe dumping more fuel in will cool it down. Gary -

dingy replied to Wizard765's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
In response to mixing parts from gearsets, I know he did. I sent him two gear pairs from my 1200 gearset. Dano undercut them and he used these with his shaft. Picture shows what I sent. Gary -

Just a wild ass idea. Maybe one off the shift forks is slightly bent & when gears are in neutral, one is still trying to engage. Did you use your forks or the ones I sent? Mine were out of my 1200 that was showing no signs of 2nd gear problems. Gary -
Mine arrived today, It looks great. Thanks, Gary

Starter issue?
dingy replied to motorcycle.jockey's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Jeff, One of the possible stumbling blocks you may encounter is a crimping tool big enough to do the 4 gauge cable. I crimped and soldered it. Used a torch to heat it up. I was lucky enough and they had one in the maint. shop at work. Sucker is about 2 foot long. I ended up needing less than 5 foot to redo mine. Can't help you with lengths because I have repositioned the battery. McMaster has (10) 4 gauge lugs for around $8, p/n 7113K249 You may be able to find cable at a local welding supply house. I used the heavy duty stuff McMaster had. Very flexible, but only came in orange P/N 7818A114 . Bought some black heat shrink to cover it. Gary -
Starter issue?
dingy replied to motorcycle.jockey's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
For a quick and dirty check of the starter, you could jumper it directly from a known good battery. Before you do next step. MAKE SURE BIKE IS IN NEUTRAL. Also on centerstand would be a good idea. Use jumper cables, put negative side of battery to a good clean ground on frame. With Positive side of jumpers touch the post coming off the starter. Bike should crank if starter is good. If you do it as described above, the rest of bikes circuitry will be isolated from the jumping battery due to starter solenoid not activated. If you for some reason decide to try to jump start bike with a battery in a car. DO NOT have car running when bike is jumpered. Gary -
You will need a flywheel puller to get it off. Auto Zone around here loans them out for free. I see this thread was started under the screen name of Pastor. If he is involved, I would have him leave during this procedure. It can lead to various 4 letter words being spoken loudly. Picture of tool attached as well as few pages from service manual. Gary
