Rear coils have a new home.
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Picture is showing now. That is the other option I have. I'll run a new pair of wires to the rear coils from the Ignitech TCI. I have the TCI located in the radio compartment, so the new run won't be much different than going to the original location. I bought a couple of the module plugs and a bunch of pins from Ignitech, I wanted to remove the jumper harness they supply with the unit. Looks lie a good time to do that. Thanks for the info on lead length. !! Gary -

Picture didn't come through. I have another option which is a 'Coil Over Plug' or COP's. The coil is part of the spark plug boot. Gary -
My cousin has an 07 Road Glide. One thing about rotating the handlebars is the hand grips are keyed into the bars. They WILL not rotate from where they are at. You may not like where the clutch and brake levers end up if you rotate bars down. Gary

You wimp, last year the top end of your bike was laying in the driveway getting the valves checked. How bad can the bearings be. I think this whole Oberlin MD thing is just a ploy to get free labor done on the scooter. Suck it up. Gary

I am all for the steering head bearing !! I will have some wrenches there for those wanting the recommended tool for this job. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3394&title=steering-head-bearing-ring-nut-wrench&cat=33 Gary

Exhaust Temperature
dingy replied to tsigwing's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
650 seems higher than I have seen on average. Normally I see in area of 450-500F The front and rear would tend to be similar in temp, if taken while bike has idled for a while. As goose said, there is a lot of variance in readings. You have to probe around to find an average, the lows readings are meaningless. The closer you are with an infared, say 12-18", the better & more consistent it will indicate. Gary -
questions concerning exhaust collector
dingy replied to hipshot's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I can see almost straight through my collector. I don't think that it is the source of the restriction in the exhaust system.. The stock mufflers are another story. They are very nice quiet units. If you want some performance, these can be modified by removing the end caps, and first set or two of baffles. I left the very first baffle in mine. They are not real loud, not near what a straight set of HD's sound like, but they are different. As far as a number to put on the HP gain, I don't know, this is only one of several changes I have made to power train, so I can't pin down a specific item. I still have a set of unmodified mufflers, and they don't seem to hurt performance. But then, I have only used them a couple of times when wife was going on longer ride with me, so I can't judge it under those conditions. Gary -
Rear coils have a new home.
dingy posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Got the rear coil pair relocated. There wasn't room for them up front any more due to the repositioned battery box. They look close to head and they are, less than an inch above. But this was the best I could come up with. Other decent spot put them close to the rear header pipes. This takes care of the main relocation of the parts at least. Battery box post is at link, if you want to see it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58658 Gary -
It was suggested that I post a new thread about the Quaker Steak & Lube dinner on June 3rd, 2011. This is the evening before the "official" MD date at Freebird's home in Oberlin , Ohio. There is a calender event at the following link. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=265&day=2011-6-3&c=1 Signing up for this is totally optional, if you don't sign up you can still go, and if you do sign up, there is no problem not going. It just gives me an idea on how many are going to be there so I can keep the restaurant informed. Also a post from Don related to that weekend at link below. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58678 Gary

A race event would be two 1st gens, not a 1st gen and an HD1AB (Harley Davidson Wanna Be) Gary

Clutch lever & cruise control
dingy replied to frankd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Does the lever have the same amount of play in it after the bike has sat overnight? If not maybe the small hole in bottom of master is plugged and not allowing fluid back into master very quickly. Gary -
Aftermarket TCI available!
dingy replied to tvking63's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Attached are a couple of pictures of a TPS I got when I first put the Ignitech on. I don't know what car it came from. On the back, molded into the case is SERA363-4 I thought about mounting it under the carb rack and working the lever with the bar on the carb rack that hooks the right 2 carbs to the left 2. The more I thought about it the less enthused I was about the TPS path. The MAP sensor is a better gauge of demand on the engine in my opinion. Gary -
More than likely its a deployable air brake, so he can slow down and wait for the 2nd gen. Gary

Indian regulator/rectifier group buy
dingy replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I know this is an old thread, but.. Snag, your picture shows a 30 amp fuse holder. All the schematics I see show a 40 amp main fuse. Have you had any problems with a 30, or did you do something a little different. Gary -
Heck with what it is, no doubt a needed gizmo. How did you heat the acrylic to get the sharp bend? Gary

Kick stand reminder.......again.
dingy replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Grade 8 would be preferred over grade 5. Grade 8 is roughly 25% stronger than a grade 5 as far as tensile strength. There is also a metric grade 12.9 that is better yet, but much less common. I used the metric sizing due to the shoulder portion was sized to fit in the existing holes. Metric size is probably a little harder to find, but it will work out better. I have a local hardware that is with the Do It Best chain and they have a great selection. Ace hardware is another good source. Link to this is at http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=48342 , as noted above. Gary -
I will organize the 2nd annual Quaker Steak & Lube dinner on Friday night. I put a calender event up for this. Registration is helpful but not required. Last year there was plenty of room. About 100 went to this. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=265&day=2011-6-3&c=1 Here is a link to the restaurant. It is located in Shefield Lake, Ohio. It is about a 20 mile ride from Freebirds home. http://www.quakersteakandlube.com/sheffield_oh/ Gary

Bike now has a battery & 2 coils in
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Now you bring this up. I hope not, but time will tell. I do remember about not setting it on concrete though. Gary -
Todays project was getting the battery box fabricated and installed. Made a two piece box out of 1/8" aluminum. Mounted a front coil bracket from a VMax on the bottom. This bracket will hold the two front cylinder coils & the Vboost motor. Rear pair of coils will be mounted rear of the back heads under the fuel tank. That's tomorrows project. Using the VMax rear bracket for those. One thing that comes to mind. Don't try this at home kids !!. Unless you have a lot of patience and enjoy tinkering with stuff. Getting some of this stuff to fit up right has been a series of try it, remove it, rework it, repeat, repeat. But it is fun. I am having as good a time rebuilding this bike as I will riding it. Gary

Help with starter switch
dingy replied to Vonwolf's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Here is a PDF file showing the starting circuit only. Shown in 3 configurations. Gary -
I am on my second one. First was an 84, PO had everything chromed on it, even swing arm. This one is titled an 83, but probably has something from most of the years they were made. It has been slightly modified. Its even got a Harley backrest on it. Gary

Which set of the R1/R6 brakes is better? The Gold dots or the Blue dots? Which donor bike is better R1, R6, FJR? I have seen some six piston calipers. Will these fit a 1st gen MKII? The Blue dots appear to have different size pistons, the Gold dots appear the same size. Anyone know the piston diameters? Do they make plastic pad covers for these? I didn't see them in the parts fiche. I might put a set of these on while I am in there. Probably need to be able to slow this puppy down once I get it going. Neutral Light, interesting
dingy replied to bkuhr's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is just going to be a wild shot in the dark as to what is happening. Looking at the simplified schematic that includes the neutral light, it could be that a coil field collapsing might be putting a pulse on the neutral light just long enough to get it to pulse. Side stand switch is closed, there is negative on the L/Y wire to clutch switch, coil of starting circuit relay energizes. When clutch is released, coil field collapses, putting a pulse on the Sb wire that goes to the Neutral light and makes it pulse. Its late, this may horse hockey, but it seems possible. Would not have noticed it with regular bulbs, due to filament taking longer to glow than an LED takes to fire. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/neutrallight1.jpg
