Why send a flock, when just one will do! Think of it as a smart bomb, a cruise missile if you will. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/mini.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/wtf-monkey-2.jpg

Center Punch on frame
dingy replied to Reddog170's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What I had heard on the cooling kit was that the rotor crank bolt had the small hole in the end of it (about .025" dia.) where the unmodified ones didn't. This of course, meant pulling the stator cover. This is the first I had heard about a punch mark for the cooling fix. Gary -
Chief musta got himself one of them Loozeeanner women that had a phone. Hope she gotta dat der 900 # block set up. Dem pygmies love live chat lines. Gary

Do not get the Harbor Freight one though. I bought one a month ago, it had a some bits mine is missing. First time I used it I twisted the #2 phillips bit. Now this may not seem like a big issue, but, I was using it to break the carb rack apart at the time. Didn't damage the rack, but I have encountered harder pretzels in my time. It went back and they refunded money. Gary

Attached a couple of pictures I just took, showing the block without the covers on. The main holding screw goes into the aluminum casting. The small plug that has the threaded insert in it is at bottom area of cover. The threads in this plug are to aid in removing it, I think. The casting is very strong in this area, the first picture shows down into the water jacket. Right behind the screw boss in question, there is a boss that extends to the inner sleeve chamber. As long as you don't get a full swing with a 12lbs sledge, you should be OK. The impact driver with a #3 bit has worked for me. Put tension against the impact with your hand in the counter clockwise direction & a firm rap from a medium size hammer should loosen it. If you screw your covers up, I have a spare set. Also have spare set of drain plugs, will be replacing them in this motor. Gary

Don't take it personal, he's like this with a lot of the newbies. Once you learn to phrase the question properly, and never ask something over, he will warm right up to you. Just try asking him about putting dyna beads in a car tire you want to mount on the rear of your bike, you will see what I mean ! ! Gary

But can it be programmed to read out in Canadian ?? Ehh? Gary

The actual foot pegs were bought at Iron Pony near Columbus, Ohio. About $30 I think. The rest of it is all hand fabricated. Extender bars are 3/4" round steel rods, mount plates are 1/4" carbon steel. It also required replacing the bolts that were used to mount them to the frame due to the added thickness of the mount plate. My concern about selling these are a liability issue. These suckers are strong. If the bike were laid down this peg could cause the bike to flip by digging in to ground. One thing I did to help possibly minimize this was to use a 3/8" grade 2 bolt that mounted the round extender bar to the adapter plate. My hope was this would bend or shear in case of impact. Haven't got to test this out yet though. Yes Carl, this made MD last year. Gary

Carl, I saw in another thread you weren't comfy on the first Gen. due to long legs/over 6' tall Would a set of pegs like this help. They are strong, a lot better than the engine guard mounted ones. Last picture is for reference of bike with knee air deflectors still on. Gary

Cheap collector alternative
dingy replied to BrileyR's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Oh who cares about smooth idle that's going to try this. I would rather it sounded like a 350 with a 3/4 race cam in it. That purrin' sound don't seem to impress those zipper bikes much. Gary -
Anybody have a spare, nonworking tach?
dingy replied to Keemez's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Oh come on, tell us about the new tach face, I'm guessing here. Why else remove needle. I don't have one of those spare though. Gary -
Cheap collector alternative

By tieing the cylinders together, the exhaust flow is maintained in a fairly uniform flow. This is refered to as scavenging. It would depend on the firing order of the left pair and the right pair. If they were 180 deg out of sync, which I think they are, it might not affect motor much. Gary -

Need 1st Gen 1300 block split in half info
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Shaun, doesn't lock it down for me though. Part is to small to have any numbers on it. That may end up being the answer though, I had to order new main & rod bearings because I screwed a crank up & I ordered one of the nozzles at the same time It was about $5 more, but that's the price I pay for not being more observant.. When it gets here I will know where it goes and the other one goes to Gary -
Anyone have a 1300, 1200 may also work, block that is split in half, I need some help on the location of the two oil nozzles in the care halves. When I sent block to machine shop, top & bottom, because they cleaned them, I took everything out. Including the two small oil nozzles & tossed them in a baggie. Well when cleaning stuff I realized they were different and I can't tell which one goes in which hole. 1st picture is attached of two nozzles. Left one is brass color with phillips slot, other is silver with straight slot. 2nd picture is of case top, and 3rd is of case bottom, locations for these. The 88 parts fiche indicates they both go into the bottom case. The service manual doesn't mention them that I can find. And, the VMax is different. The motor DVD mentions them but doesn't show them. The 83 1200 fiche shows them going into the case where I am 99.9% sure they go, but doesn't show the difference. Gary

When I use your search I get 8,577 hits. With mine it is down to 6,147 hits. If you have a 2nd gen, you could edit the string to this. It would then eliminate most of the 1st gen items. These searches can then be stored in your profile. yamaha venture -gt -700 -1983 -1984 -1985 -1986 -1987 -1988 -1989 -1990 -1991 -1992 -1993 -600 -snow -star -enticer -blaster -600cc -480cc -wave -viper -vector -xenon -phazer -mountain -exciter -snow* -srx -venom -vt600 -vt480 -vt700 -sxr -carbide With this search, I get 4,174 hits. I got an email from Ebay today indicating that they are going to start charging final selling fees on sold items that include the shipping cost. As a carrot type thing, they are now giving 50 free listings a month, so there may be a lot more junk type items listed. This may eliminate the practice that some sellers have been using to reduce the cost of selling items, which is to inflate the shipping cost. I sell some of my wrenches on there and have had them listed as free shipping for a while. Cost reflected this, but it seemed like an eye catcher to someone looking. On a related note, does anyone know how to do a search for Venture parts on Ebay and not get the snowmobile stuff. The Japs didn't know many English words apparently, so they made a snowmobile the same name. This is the search string I use, which eliminates a bunch of snowmobile & 2nd gen stuff, but not all. yamaha venture -gt -700 -1999 -2000 -2001 -2002 -2003 -2004 -2005 -2006 -2007 -2008 -2009 -rsv -600 -snow -star -enticer -blaster -600cc -480cc -wave -viper -vector -xenon -phazer -mountain -exciter -snow* -srx -venom -vt600 -vt480 -vt700 -sxr -carbide Gary

Great News ! ! Gary

Actually, and this is with all due respects to Skydoc, this is one mod I did to the bike last year that is not going back on. In fairness to Earl, I did not get my breather from him, but I think it functioned just the same. My block is painted flat black, and as such shows any oil very easily. I see oil that is coming from this breather much more than I would like to on the block. Yes the stock way is somewhat of a pain, but it does not port the oil out onto the motor. Sorry Earl. Gary

Other than serial number, nothing comes to mind that is going to leap out at you. S/N is on motor, rear left side, above the drive shaft housing (middle gear). One thing that is different is the oil crossover chamber. Basically, looks the same, but the bolt pattern from the 1200 to the 1300 is different. It is shown between the two cylinder banks in picture below. The screws that hold the two halves together are different. This is the 1300 style. Also, measure the aluminum clutch cover width. From the engine case out. I know the 1200 & 1300 are different. Post that, I have one of each here. Gary
