Quit apologizing, it is a sign of weakness. The 1st post I did in this thread was wrong too. The seals I linked to were for a 99-07 VMax which won't work. I tried to correct that post, but it looks like crap now. Gary

I did not check every year but here is what I found using Partshark.com for similarities & differences between fork oil seals & dust seals. 1983, 1988, 1989, 1990 & 1993 Ventures all use P/N 1NL-23145-00-00 for oil seal 26H-23144-00-00 is the dust seal used for the years 1983,1988 & 1989. I do not see the dust cap listing on partshark.com or the Part Fiche for 1990 - 1993 Ventures. 1985, 1989, 1990 & 1992 VMaxs all use P/N 1NL-23145-00-00 for oil seal 26H-23144-00-00 is the dust seal used for the years 1985, 1989, 1990 & 1992 for the Vmax. Starting in 1993, the oil seal & dust seal are different for the VMax's from the 1st Gen Ventures To me they are both the same from 1985 - 1989. But from 1990 -1993, I can not find the dust seal listing for the Ventures. Then in 1993, the VMax changed seals & dust caps. The lower outer fork tube P/N changed in 1990 for the Ventures, so it is possible the dust seal is different. Gary

Actually, the wiring harness swap opens a big can of worms if both bikes are not similarly equipped. If one has cruise, air ride, and or CB. the connectors are quite different. Main handle bar switches, brake & clutch switches, instrument cluster connections, anti dives, just to get started. I am what you would call an expert on this. Ran into all these when I converted 83 to an 88 basically. You are correct, I forgot about the 90-93 pickup coils, that will then get into wiring harness & TCI Gary

I posted a link last night to FLB_78 post about fork seals. I went to ebay copied link, logged out of ebay, came back here, pasted link, went to preview thread, checked link & it worked. Posted thred and link did not work. Apparently something got corrupted when I did the preview thread & checked link. Then it took several attempts to edit thread & get link back to working. Not worried about fixing this at all about this Don, it is one of those things I do rarely and I know it is an issue. It just seems to not have a set pattern on how it reacts when link is cut & pasted. After trying to reset link last night, it behaved different than first try. Probably due to some code that got copied into post after first screw up. Gary

If you are just changing the motor out, I can only think of 2 connectors that may differ, and you can reuse the parts from the 1200 motor. 1) The thermostat/temperature sender is different, you can use the on that is on the bike now. Just keep the sender unit that is on the top right area of motor. Its not really part of motor anyways. 2) The neutral switch may be different. Does bike have a gear position indicator on dash now? Most, but not all 1300 have the gear indicator. This is a somewhat easily interchanged switch. It is behind the middle drive cover on the left side of motor. Old one will fit in 1300 motor. The 1300 motor will be a direct replacement for the 1200. All mounting points are the same. I would suggest you try to use the rubber mounts from the 1300. They are heavier and stronger than the 1200. Pieces & parts internally will be different in many cases. Clutch, water pump, transmission, all have some different components in them. The clutch crankcase cover is different on the 1300, won't interchange with 1200. Carbs are different. The 1200 carbs will run on the 1300, but not as good as a 1300 set. If it is an 83 & you change carbs, you will need to change TCI to newer model. Hookup point for 83 TCI is unique to 83 carbs. Gary

The CLASS system is designed to only work with the key in the ACCY position. This is probably to keep riders from adjusting it while riding, and being distracted. With total disregard for the previous sentence, the link below details how to power up CLASS system when key is in RUN position. As far as front end not working, I would suspect a dirty push button might be a possibility in the controller head. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=51582 Gary

Dave, Your suggestions are valid if you are just logging on. Often though, say on weekends, I will be logged on all day and just hit the home page tab in upper left corner of the site, which does take me back in to the More loop when I come in from whatever I am doing. Like I said, it is not a big thing, just felt like moaning & b**ching. Now don't get me started on how hard it is to get the occasional link to an Ebay site to work right. Gary

This is something I came across on Ebay that seems interesting. It is a different design from the standard OEM seal. I know they are for a VMax, but I checked seal & dust cover P/N & they are the same as my MKII forks. (This is incorrect I did not check the right year, these will not fit a 1st Gen Venture. I deleted link to them) But there are similar seals that will fit a fist Gen, just not listed with dust caps. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270709451125&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT I bought a set from a member here last fall after he told me they were OEM and they turned out not to be, so I really don't want to put them in. But I am thinking about these non - OEM's. Go figure. Gary

Well then nominate him for an award. This doesn't seem to be done much here anymore. Must have been popular at one time judging by the bling some of the old timers have. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/awards.php Gary

Don, It is not a life crisis, but.. Some of us use the Watering Hole forum as our home page. In my case, when I look at it, my unread threads are highlighted darker. If the last thread in the list is highlighted, I then look at the 2nd page to see if there are any new threads on that page. In order to get to the 2nd page, the More button must be selected, which doesn't seem to do much anymore since you changed the number of posts on the '1st' page to 20 posts about a month ago. It does seem to get rid of the current poll, which is "Where do you live in Alabama". The only thing clicking the more button does for most of us, I am guessing, is refresh the page and then we have to scroll back to the bottom of the 20 listed posts then select 2nd page or 3rd or 4th .... which now is conveniently displayed. All the subsequent pages have the ability to select the other pages. Like I said, not a crisis, but seems to be an opportunity for streamlining. Gary

Just a random thought on the Hydro lock theory. How would a motor that is cruising along at maybe 3500 RPM, just all of a sudden, ingest enough water to cause the hydro lock to happen in the first place? It would not take a lot of water, granted. A blown head gasket could be an explanation. Blown head gaskets are not a rare occurrence, and they are not often attributed to this type of failure. If the piston did hydro lock, what would be the cause relationship factor that then cause the rod to snap. The rod snapping is likely due to what is referred to in engineering as an object in tension, meaning the part was being stretched. The hydro lock would have the opposite force applied, which is a compressive force. If this were to occur, I would expect that one of two things to occur. First the wrist pin junction point would fracture on the piston and it be driven up towards the top of the piston, or second the crankshaft would be torqued very badly. I do agree with the assessment that the piston does not appear to have contacted the valves though. There is apparent damage in one picture that appears the rod broke the skirt of the piston out. This possibly could be an indicator of why there is no valve contact evident. If the failure occurred at the point when the piston was being pulled down by the rod, thus the rod was in tension, the piston would continue downward until struck by the end of the broken rod as it started it upward movement. This impact broke out the side of the piston and caused enough deflection of the rod to cause it to go through the cylinder liner sleeve, then the block. Any bending that the rod now displays would very possibly be caused by it being driven through the cylinder sleeve at high velocity. If this happened around 3500 rpm, which by unchecked quick calculation equals 17.7 MPH of rod speed at mid stroke. Think of the damage that a car gets if it were to hit something at this speed. Now, how many times did the rod bang on the sidewall before breaking through. To me the slight twisting could be expected. This all is just speculation though. Gary

I believe that the twist hand grip portion is interchangeable. I may have one laying in garage if that is what you need. It is yours for shipping cost if I can find it. The black rubber hand grip part is not real pretty as I recall. Gary- 16 replies
