Doubtful the timing is off if the plugs are firing. There is no adjustability to the timing advance that can be done mechanically Do the stator & clutch side covers say 1300 on them? This would be a possible indication the motor has been changed. The actual motor though does not matter. The TCI & the carbs are what is mated. 83 carbs with the 26H prefix TCI. If you are concerned it is the timing advanve due to the TCI, you can eliminate the advance by unplugging the hose from the carb connection & plugging the open port on the carbs. This will allow bike to start with no vacuum advance. It should start without this. The vacuum advance does not kick in unless the bike is under load. Gary

Yes, depending on RPM. Instead of advancing spark, system will retard spark. Gary

Rebuilt water pump leaking
dingy replied to 1982vette's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There are really two seals. One is a ceramic face seal, that is on the water side. Behind it there is an oil seal, then the bearing. Did you put both of the cir-clips back on. There is one on each side of the plastic gear on the drive side of the pump. The inner one holds the ceramic seal against its face and the other holds the gear on the shaft. Gary -
In addition to previous comments, you want a low weight oil. 10W or 5W Probably some fork oil setting around somewhere in the garage. Gary

If you are running a TCI that has a model # starting with 26H, it must be hooked up above the throttle plates to run correctly. The bike should start with either a 26H or a 41R model TCI, but overall will run like crap under load. A motor from 83-89 will NOT run with a TCI model # 3JJ, due to pickup coil differences. The plug in connection is identical on all 1st gen TCI's so they can't be distinguished by the connectors. 1st picture shows a 1983 carb bank, left side looking slightly forward, bottom of carbs oriented down. There is a red cap on the port on the front carb. This is where a stock configured 1983 26H TCI vacuum sensor would attach. 2nd picture shows a motor with the carbs removed. This is taken from the right side, looking slightly rearward. On the intake, there is a black vacuum port cover with a clamp on it (3 visible in picture). The stock 84-93 TCI's hook up to generally the port on the left front intake manifold (#2), though it really does not matter which one is used. Gary

Aftermarket Trunk for an '83 Royale
dingy replied to hilligan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
As Bongo mentioned earlier, the MKII (86-93) has a bigger trunk than the MKI, (83 & 84) The 85 is sort of the best of both worlds. Large trunk & removable, so if you stop at for the night, it can be quickly detached and carried along. MKI & MKII are completely different mounting systems. Enough with the Mr. crap, last person to do that much had a badge & wanted License, registration & proof of insurance !! Gary- 12 replies

Shucks, looks like you can add me to the failed ignition switch list...
dingy replied to LilBeaver's topic in Watering Hole
This would be one solution. My concern there would be the point of failure in the stock keyed switch. There are a number of points it could fail and take the Accy side with it. I might prefer to try something that would totally bypass the switch. If you were to locate a switch in a position that required some panel to be removed to get to the switch, this might provide some more security. There is also the option of locating a small, second keyed switch in a hidden spot to bypass the switch. This would very possibly satisfy the concern that there was not a toggle switch only way of starting the bike, at least it did take a key. Attached is one source of these switches. McMaster Carr. The keyed switch would only need one switched contact. This could operate the bypass relay. Trick would be finding a suitable mounting location. Also, I am suggesting the second keyed switch, just as a limited usage, emergency option. Also attached is just the schematic, showing the before & after wiring of the switch, with the keyed switch added. Gary -
Aftermarket Trunk for an '83 Royale
dingy replied to hilligan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I don't know of a specific aftermarket one. But since you have all the mounts, it then is possible to adapt something else to fit on. What would help is to get a picture of the bottom surface of other trunks, so you could decide if it was possible to design an adapter plate. Might help if you took some pictures of your trunk bottom & the mounting points on the bike & post them here. The pictures attached are a start, but this one has been modified some. I put extender bars in to move the trunk back 2", the antenna mount has been relocated, and the right side loop has been cut. Gary- 12 replies

You need a decent size air compressor. I have a 60 gallon upright, 2 stage, and I can get about 10 minutes worth of blasting & I have to let it catch up. Gary

Did you upgrade the Rectifier/Regulator? Check connector going to R/R and see if there is any indication of overheating. Did you replace the three wire connector for the stator or hook in after it? Any pattern to voltage swings that you can see? As usual, check all the battery connections & main grounds, open, clean, & dialectic grease. Gary

I have had decent success cleaning my carbs and a bunch of the parts from the motor using an ultrasonic cleaner from harbor freight. I use water and Simple Green cleaning solution in it. It isn't real big, but it will get me through this rebuild and I will be happy. Around $55 when it was on sale. It took ALL the burnt oil residue off the pistons. Also got a gallon of Berryman's carb cleaner from AutoZone to soak carb parts in, still used ultrasonic though. About $18 I had clear coated the water pump cover after I polished it last year. Ran it through the ultrasonic, and it stripped the clear coat right off it. So it does get stuff cleaner. For the bigger stuff, I have a 5 gallon pail I put kerosene in to wash parts down, not elegant, but it works. Then I have a home made sand blast cabinet I made out of a oddly shaped file cabinet that I glass bead stuff in. Gary

Houston, We have a Problem !! Do you have any USB ports? Like Flyinfool said, get a USB stick, probably around $10 at Walmart, or borrow one. Go to someone who has a DVD and copy them to USB stick. Copy will only take 5 minutes or so. Then copy them to your hard drive. If you don't have a USB, Houston, We have a Problem !! They are way to big to email to yourself from another PC. Is your Wii drive visible on your PC? Is it hooked up to a home network? Gary

Mo' Money, Mo' Power Unless you have some very high end HD's you want to whip, its got enough. They are never gonna whip an FJR or Hyubusi, but I think a VRod is within reach, with a few tweaks. Myself, I wanted just a tad bit more. But, then I been doing this for a while, been on wheels with a motor hooked to them for 5 decades, since I was 5 years old. Not really after the top end anymore, 130 ain't as fun as it used to be. But 0-100 is fun, and puts a **** eatin' grin on your face, as they pull up along side and go "What you got in that old thing ?" Gary

As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers. I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong? He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.' I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, 'An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.' Eric grinned.... 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before? 'No,' I replied. 'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.' So I wrote down: ID10T I used to like Eric, the little bastard.

Dan, It's not like a movie DVD. Put it in your DVD drive, then open the drive in the My Computer area. On the DVD There are two .WMV files on it. These will play with Windows Media Player. Double click on file File_1_of_2.wmv, it should open. If it doesn't, single click it then right click and select Open With, then select Windows Media Player. After you go through 1st file, then repeat on second file. I you have Carb DVD, it is just one file. Same process. I copied the files to a directory on my hard drive. Gary
