  1. If that is 10 Volts AC, that is way low. There is about a drop of 30% when rectifiying AC to DC, I think it is refered to as RMS drop. I'm at work on lunch right now. When I get home I will see what I can dig up. Unless someone else knows in between. Gary
  2. Getting a used engine is like digging into a box of chocolates, As Forest Gump said, "You never know what you are going to get." The used 88 MKII parts bike I got from MiCarl would be an example. I was lucky and got it from someone I trusted to tell me what he knew about the motor. Carl told me the motor had a minor problem. It only had 28,000 miles on it, and was in decent internal condition other then the two pistons on the left side had very tight ring to groove fitmant. Had I not taken it apart, this may have cleared up, but very well may not have. I was able to clean the piston grooves to where they were in spec and work fine. Low mileage does not mean a motor has been taken care of. May actually be the opposite, indicates it has had owners that didn't ride much and may not have cared about maintaining it. Gary
  3. Mini, My short little dear, That only appears to be a 30 round clip. I seem to remember there being 230 bikes at the last MD at Oberlin. Now figuring only 1 rider per bike, I don't think your big enough to carry enough clips to get us all. Gary
  4. Look at history and you will see that the Navy & the USMC were both founded in November 1775. The reason that the Navy writes the marines checks is that we don't need no stinkin' pencil pushin' accountants. Along the same lines, there are no Marine Chaplain's or Doctors, we do need them, but they have an aversion to shooting people. Gary

  6. I have both side covers still left. These are from my burgundy 83. They also have the chrome insert in them. I used another set to make the bikini covers I have on it now. Gary
  7. That's my kinda girl !! Gary
  8. I didn't think to look at forum where it was posted at. I hardly ever go to the sub forums unless I am looking for an old post. It seems most all of the posts show up in the watering hole. Sorry your Swiftness. Gary
  9. I put mine together with the washer against the oil filter. The washer keeps the spring from damaging rubber grommet in filter. I am guessing it is a 1st gen with a handle like Swifty, hard to tell though without going to your profile. Picture #2 Gary
  10. These are a couple of pictures of the left over ice from the storm that went through a couple of days ago. It is where the snow built up on a deck railing, then later the ice formed over it. When it warmed up some today, the snow underneath melted first leaving these ice domes. They are very fragile, some collapsed when I walked on the deck. 11. And if the owners manual happens to be on the bike, which they have, come up with a somewhat old looking note book and do as suggested above. Even note those occasional long trips for that realistic tone. I write down my end of year mileage, which is when I do winter maintenance items. Remember the tires as well. This is of course from your excellent memory of these events. In hindsight, I refer you to the third post in this thread!! Gary
  12. A somewhat related joke: Bob always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots, so, seeing some on sale, he bought them and wore them home. Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, "Notice anything different about me?" Margaret looked him over. "Nope." Frustrated, Bob stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the boots. Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, "Notice anything different NOW?" Margaret looked up and said in her best deadpan, "Bob, what's different? It's hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, it'll be hanging down again tomorrow." Furious, Bob yelled, "AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT'S HANGING DOWN, MARGARET?" "Nope. Not a clue", she replied. "IT'S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!!!!" Without missing a beat Margaret replied, "Shoulda bought a hat, Bob. Shoulda bought a hat."
  13. Good Luck Bobby. !! Appropriate icon of poking you in eye with a stick. Gary
  14. I didn't get it to the guy near Don's. All I had done last year was a RWHP only check at a Dyno shootout. I had two runs and I switched between the stock TCI and the Ignitech TCI when I first put in the ignitech. I have since modified parameters in ignitech and it is running better than it was when this dyno was done. Results were disappointing for overall HP, but the comparison between the two TCI's was encouraging. They tested almost identical. 1st attachement is scan of dyno. The red curve is the Ignitech and the black one is stock TCI. The stock TCI started breaking up at high RPM which it didn't do when riding. I think I didn't get plug seated good when I was swapping before run. Graph is in 4th gear. Bear in mind this is actual RWHP, not the published HP numbers that are taken at the crankshaft. Also attached is a dyno done on the 1200 engine two years before. Gary
  15. I do not think it is something you would want to do to a stock first gen. I have Vmax heads, cams, a very modified exhaust and at this point rejetted 34mm carbs (MKI size). I also have an Ignitech TCI, so I can adjust the timing curve to any configuration. Also, it is an MKI with a 1300 block in it, and a VMax (FJR) final drive. It has been a series of tweaking evrything to get it running decent. This winter I am putting on 35mm carbs (Vmax size), dynojet VMax stage 1 jet kit, vboost manifold and the vmax air box with K&N filter. Also going to have .030" milled off the block across the top to increase compression. I am sure this is not all going to just bolt on and work right, Carbs may be on and off several times to get jetting dialed in. Once I get it close, I will have it Dyno'ed to see where I am at with it. What I am hoping to acomplish is pushing the torque curve farther up on the RPM range. Last summer I put about 6,000 miles on the rebuilt bike with the somewhat VMax configuration. One of the things it was lacking was power from 8,500 to 9,500 RPM,s. Bike was still pulling, but it was definatly flattening out on power. I have hit 10,000 RPM's with no valve float but no useful power. I am hoping to get it to breathe better at the upper end with out wrecking the midrange which is where the vast majority of my riding is. If you like to tinker it is fun, but can be frustrating at times. As a side note, MPG's are not a primary concern, I am after RWHP. If it gets 35 mpg and is running properly, I am a happy camper. Gary
  16. Hey Mikey, you comin to Oberlin MD ?? If you are, I will give you a first hand look at what a nicely running 28 year old first gen looks like, You will of course see more of the rear end of the scoot, And unless you got real good eyesight, when I hit third you won't be able to read the license plate. And don't get yammer started, he's done 120 in third, just ask him. Gary
  17. Where ever you are seeing sparking, you have a problem. Sparking is only going to occur with a some sort of a bad connection, or a short circuit the majority of the time on a Venture. It sounds like you have a partial open circuit. Find it, fix it. The sparklers are signaling the way. Run to the light !! And you are in Utah, how cold is it there ?? Gary
  18. The unplugging of the stator plug is unrelated to your other problems. The stator plug only serves the purpose of putting the output from the stator into the rectifier when the motor is running. The system should power up with this plug unconnected. Everything would work assuming you had a system in perfect condition. I do not mean to imply though that this stator plug is not the source of your seemingly low battery, it could very well be, but that is a separate issue. Verify that battery is fully charged. A trickle charger is not the first choice to fully deep cycle charge a discharged battery. If any doubt about its condition, pull it out and take it somewhere that a load test can be done on it. Auto Zone, O'rielys, etc. You have a problem elsewhere in the system. As bkuhr recommended, check all connections. I would suggest to check them you disconnect each main connection point, clean all surfaces with emery paper and reassemble with dielectric grease. This includes the main ground on the right lower front of motor and the small cables that come off the large battery cable near the battery posts. Check every one of the fuses in the fuse block by gently pulling on each end and see that the clips have not corroded and lost their holding ability. This is a common problem that will cause circuit problems. Keep posting your results and we will try to not send you on to many wild goose chases. We have seen this before. Gary
  19. I was getting a haircut last week and doing my normal BS'ing with the stylist, and at some point I told her I looked pretty good for a 72 year old. She didn't say anything back about that comment, but when she rang me out at register, she charged me the senior price, which I don't qualify for yet. I told her I was joking about the 72 age and that I was 56 and didn't qualify for the discount. She said "Oh well, you will get it from now on because I put you in computer as a senior." I tried to do the right thing. Gary
  20. Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others. HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took: The melody out of music, The pride out of appearance, The courtesy out of driving, The romance out of love, The commitment out of marriage, The responsibility out of parenthood, The togetherness out of the family, The learning out of education, The service out of patriotism, The Golden Rule from rulers, The nativity scene out of cities, The civility out of behavior, The refinement out of language, The dedication out of employment, The prudence out of spending, The ambition out of achievement or God out of government and school. And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!! And, we do understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country. Does anyone under the age of 50 know the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner? What about the last verse of My Country 'tis of Thee? "Our father's God to thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing. Long may our land be bright, With freedom's Holy light. Protect us by Thy might, Great God our King." Just look at the Seniors with tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts as they stand at attention with their hand over their hearts! YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN! I'm the life of the party...... even if it lasts until 8 p.m. I'm very good at opening childproof caps.... with a hammer. I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up. I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying. I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place, somewhere. I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg. I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps. I'm a walking storeroom of facts..... I've just lost the key to the storeroom door. Yes, I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN and I think I am having the time of my life! Now if I could only remember who sent this to me, I wouldn't send it back to them, but I would send it to many more too! Spread the laughter Share the cheer Let's be happy While we're here.
  21. I am going to put a VMax air box on the bike this winter. I am toying with an idea to create a 'cowl air induction' setup. In the picture below, you can see that the VMax intakes air on the left and right side of the air box. Front of air box is on right side in picture. When the air box is on the bike, it appears like there is clearance to run an intake through the side of the fairing pockets and direct air into these intakes. Since I have removed my knee fairings, I have two unused air intake scoops on the front of the bike just looking for something to do. The radio side looks easy, I have an aftermarket radio installed that is shorter than a normal radio, due to it doesn't have a CD player. The right side will be a little more challenging due to the coolant reservoir on that side. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/DSC01019.jpg
  22. Below is a link to a thread that has another excel spreadsheet for valves in it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43410 This one will calculate the size shim needed based upon the measured clearance measured and the shim in place. There is one sheet for metric measurements and another for inches measurements. It will give a no shim needed message if within specification. But in most cases you probably wouldn't pull the shim out to see what it was if it measured OK. I did this for when I had motor setting on bench and I knew what each shim was in the heads. It will give you two options for a shim in most cases. One will be ending '0' or '5'. This is the only ones I have found that you can order. Second one will be in the '2' or '8' range. These ranges are installed in the bikes from the factory and may be available as a replacement. Note that if you have VMax heads installed, this chart is not the correct one to use. VMax exhaust valves have a different clearance spec than Ventures. I have another sheet for the VMax's if needed by anyone. Cell ranges are protected in the sheet on line to help users enter info. Only the fields that require data to be input are accessible, this prevents deleting the underlying formulas. and getting bad outputs. If anyone wants an unlocked version, PM and I will send it to you. Gary
  23. Randy, Have you checked the contacts inside the fuel pump? Cut out of MKII manual showing contacts inside pump attached. Gary
  24. And what do you have up your sleeve besides an arm? Gary
  25. Krispy, You were correct about the gear order being inverted. I have corrected the first post. Still working on that left & right thing. I am trying to find an animation that I had seen at one time that illustrates how the shifter forks engage the dogs on the various gears by sliding them on the transmission shafts. Gary
