Point is as refered to in a previous post, I have a clue about this. This joke has been around for ages, there are multitudes of others that favor one service at the expense of another. Everyone that serves in any capacity had a job to do, some liked that job, many did not. All gave some, Some gave all. As impied by some posts, the light hearted joking about military service may have become one more of those, off limit, Politically Correct subjects. Im am not saying that Military Service is a joke by any stretch of the imagination, so don't even go there. Gary

This will irritate a couple of previous posters, tough turds. I will preface this with a little background: ! helped bury a second cousin who had half his face blown off in Afghanistan last year. I had an uncle killed in WWII in Europe that was a pilot. I have a very close cousin who served on the carrier Kennedy during Vietnam. My brother was in the navy in submarines His son was a tail boomer on a CK130 and flew in several conflicts. Another niece was an Air Force officer, a nephew an Air Force Sergent. I was in the USMC during Vietnam. I do have a little bit of military background with the previous history. What is your point in questioning if the original poster was in the military. He prefaced the first post by saying it was from a close friend that served with the Marines. Obviously, the post was Marine oriented. But it was still a joke. Some of the jokes were somewhat close to the truth though. But then I am biased. Do you have to be a democrat to tell Obama jokes? Do you have to be gay to tell gay jokes? Just because someone that doesn't have a military service icon in their listing doesn't mean they didn't serve in some form or have a family member who did. There are some that don't want to remember what they went through. Do you get my point yet. Gary

Well, I don't think in the legal sense I stole it. A friend emailed it to me, though they may have stole it. I am probably only chargeable with receiving and concealing stolen property then. And since I really haven't concealed it, hell I might only have to do three months, maybe it will be friggin warm by the time I get out. Gary

Time to start Tearing into the Bike,....
dingy replied to DarrinGT's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The 4 different jets in each carb are calibrated to the air flow based upon the stock air box configuration. There is a main jet, a needle jet and two air jets in each carb body. The bike will idle fairly decent with the airbox lid modified, but the mid range is where it suffers. About 2500 RPM and up it lacks power and any throttle response. I tried to let my stock 83 configuration 'breathe' a little better by drilling two 3/4" holes in top of the lid, bike did not like that. I ended up covering holes with duct tape. With current configuration of VMax heads and rejetted carbs, it likes the same holes now uncovered. Gary -
Exhaust or Engine Clapping noise?
dingy replied to VentureBob's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That would be one way. If you know someone that has an infrared theromometer, you can check temps as it reachs operating temp. This would assist a little in diagnosing if temps varied widely. The IR temp reading will vary depending on where reading is taken at. I found it fairly consistent on header flange that bolts to head. You may need to pull side covers to get to rear headers. FYI, these can reach temps of 400 F. and up somewhat quickly. Gary -
Exhaust or Engine Clapping noise?
dingy replied to VentureBob's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If it were the cold air and normal exhaust condensation, I would think the two sides would be the same. The right side looked much denser than the left. This could be a sign that the right and left side are not at equal operating temperatures, hence not firing on all cylinders as Bkuhr suggested. If you could check the temperatures of the individual cylinders when you first start it, this may give you a clue as to which one, if any are not firing. Your bike looks nice, considering its 26 years old. I would check the drain valve though. Look at thread linked below. Snaggletooth posted pictures of position it should be in. You need to click on pics to see full size version to appreciate the positioning. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=55914 Gary -

Having never seen one of these bikes naked, the thing that leaps out at me is the air cleaner pods in 5th picture. Is this normal for this model? I know a stock 1st gens don't like the air intake modified. Gary -
Something else to consider is that in the last 12 months, the seller has had 41,714 feed backs left. This is only feed backs left, a lot of people don't leave feedback on ebay when they complete a transaction. So this implies his ebay sales have been somewhat higher than this number. 41,714 divided by 250 (the average working days in a year) = 166 transactions a day. This would almost certainly mean this is not a one man operation. Perhaps you got a disgruntled, or minimum wage employee, that didn't give a rats ass. Using Pinwall as a reference point, they have had 42,935 feed backs in 12 months. I have been to Pinwalls store and they have a number of employees, not sure how many though. When I ship stuff using paypal, it marks items as shipped as soon as I run the shipping label, even though they are still laying on my desk. Paypal shipping also sends buyer an email saying item is shipped at same time. I empathize with your dissatisfaction at a rude reply to your request for information, but the reply you received is not indicative of this sellers overall reported reputation. Gary

Exhaust or Engine Clapping noise?
dingy replied to VentureBob's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think some of the noise is valve train related. Mine still has somewhat similar noise when first started, but not quite as pronounced, but may be due to sound recording. It was gone through completely, 6000 miles ago. Smoke on right bank is much worse than left bank, possible valve stem seals. How long has it been since valves checked? Have you done a compression check, probably won't show anything, but would point to valve stem seals for smoking. Some what of a miss when first started up, while choke engaged. Might as well hear it now, cause your gonna hear it later, Seafoam. Radiator bypass valve looks to be in wrong position slightly. Gary -
I am not condoning his very unprofessional response. That is not the way to get repeat business. And as this thread will prove, 1 dissatisfied customers will lead to 20 others hearing about it. (Many more in this case). But I think most of us have had a bad day now and then. What I would say for him is he has 87,000 + feedbacks and a 99.9% rating. Also, the covers I see he has listed, are only $20 for the pair and seem fairly nice for the price. I have never bought from him, so this is only from viewing his active auctions and profile. He has 1700 + items listed now. For comparison, Pinwall, which many here have said is great, has 87,000 + feed backs with a 99.3% rating. Gary

I will work on this as we get closer. At some point I will post a thread to try to get a head count. THIS IS NOT THAT THREAD !! I went to the restaurant 4 or 5 days in advance and called them the day we went, but they still didn't let second shift know. It worked out fine though. We had 75 or more people there. Gary

Say Goodbye To The Anti-Dives!
dingy replied to skydoc_17's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I reworked wiring on mine so valves only work with front brakes. Bike doesn't dive much at all with rear brake only, plus I have progressives. When I am in traffic or setting at light, I can use rear brake and valves are not engaged. Was not real easy, I had to open up wiring harness sheathing and install a diode to accomplish. Gary -
Below is a link to one I have from Auto Zone. I have been satisfied with it. It is easy to screw into plug holes on my 1st gen. $39.99, it doesn't have a case, but comes with a pouch. It does not have the rubber tipped adapters, but as mentioned these are of little use. Hose has a disconnect fitting from gauge which makes it easier to screw into holes. It has 10 mm, 12mm, 14mm, 18mm and a 14mm long reach adapters. The gauge is wrapped in heavy rubber, so it seems durable. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Actron-2-1-2-in-standard-and-metric-professional-compression-tester-kit/_/N-25j0?counter=3&filterByKeyWord=compression&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=347021_0_0_ Gary

Ya, but it probably was a lot colder in your garage in Omaha, than it was in mine in northern Ohio. I was here for ya ! Gary

I could be wrong here, but I have a decent compression tester, and I just checked the fitting on it, by screwing it into a spare head I have, and it is a 12 x 1.25. I have a thread gage and I measured compression end, as well as it is marked 12mm Gary

coolant drain question
dingy replied to ccterry's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Good Lord Snag, what happened to that plug? Looks like it went skidding down the road at some point? Not one of those appearance items though, I'm just sayin Gary -
I think the 10 x 1.25 is a more common metric size. Gary

The purpose of the capacitor across the positive and negative battery terminals is to allow the "Plates" of the capacitor to smooth out spikes in the power system. Think of the capacitor as a larger buffer. When a short term spikes in the power system occur, this buffer smooths out the spikes in the noise. If the spike is of sufficient duration or power, then the capacitor is overwhelmed. If you were to look at the DC voltage on an oscilloscope, there would be a constant line showing the 12vdc. Superimposed on this line, there are very small spikes of voltage that cause static in electronics gear. Sources of this static include emissions from the ignition coils, relays opening and closing, speedometer sensors, tachs, metal rubbing, etc. This is where the size of the "plates" comes into play. The larger the surface area of the "plates" the more the capacitor is able to absorb, or smooth out, the noise spikes. The "plates" of the capacitor are two very thin sheets of foil, separated by an insulator, one piece connected to each lead of the capacitor. The capacitor acts like a block to DC voltage, in other words, DC voltage will not pass through the capacitor. What will happen when the circuit is powered up is the capacitor will acquire a charge, or potential difference, equal to the system voltage. When the circuit is powered down, the capacitor will then discharge back into the circuit. This discharge rate is determined by the resistance in the circuit that the capacitor is connected across and the size of the plates. On my 83, when I put in the 88 wiring harness and two capacitors that are included in the MKII's, my after market radio will continue to play for about 45 seconds after the key is turned off. This is due to the capacitors storing a sufficient charge to power the radio for that duration. The use of a capacitor as described above, causes zero current drain on the system, after the initial charge, which is almost instantaneous. Gary

The white red wire may be part of the battery level sensor. Does your battery have a hole in the same area as the fill plugs with a sensor plugged into it? If not it may be a bypass put in at some point. Some replacement batteries did not come with the sensor hole, so the wiring mod was required to discountine the warning on the CMU. But, if it is a bypass, when you disconnect it there should be a warning icon come on. also there should be a flashing red light for about 60 sec. The other item between the pos & neg posts may be a noise reducing capacitor as you suggested. It is a fairly small size to have much effect though. With capacitors, bigger is better when it comes to noise reduction. The capacitor that Yamaha started installing on the MKII Ventures is about an 1" dia and about 2 1/2" long for comparison Gary

coolant drain question
dingy replied to ccterry's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
After you remove the set screw, the knob will pull straight out, meaning no threads. In reality, this won't happen though, you will have to pull on it and wiggle back and forth. Next is a link to parts to fix it. If you want to drain coolant, the drain plug is on the right side of bike on bottom of water pump housing. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=1724&title=first-gen1983-1993-radiator-drain-upgrade&cat=22 Gary
