ATTN: Motor Rebuilders
dingy replied to bongobobny's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Try this link, it is to sellers page that has his items listed for sale. http://shop.ebay.com/luci0903/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 I know Bongo is trying to help by offering this, but if you take into consideration the quality of this video and the time it took this man to make it, it is certainly worth the small fee he is asking to buy a copy from him. I received both of the DVD's I bought within three days of paying. He is offering both the engine video DVD and the Carb video on a second DVD for $20 bucks for both including shipping, that is not much considering what one will spend in parts if you do undertake rebuilding a motor or carbs. Or you can get the motor for $16 including shipping, the carb DVD is $13 including shipping. He did not have the carb video when I first got the motor DVD. He has some clips of segments of both DVD linked to the Ebay pages that show some of the content. Just for info, the motor video only shows rebuilding the motor, it is in a completely stripped down and prepped condition when video starts. He even goes into how to properly size the main bearings as the are not all the same. Carb video shows the carbs off the bike, but the disassembly of them is shown. Gary -
Something you might want to do is to pump some fresh fluid through the system and try to flush out the lower slave fluid. There is no way to really drain what is in the slave unit, without removing it, so the old fluid will still be in there. Might want to flush about a quarter of the new bottle, about 3 or 4 refills of the master cylinder, through the system to agitate what is in there and try to replace it with clean fluid. Gary

Bob, Is it the one that is on Ebay? I have the engine DVD and his new card DVD, both are great. Seller I got these from is: http://shop.ebay.com/luci0903/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 He has both of them listed for $20 total including shipping. The carb video shows all the parts needed to do a COMPLETE rebuild, but I doubt many would buy everything he shows. I got a gallon of the carb cleaner he recommends using from AutoZone, called Berryman's Gary -
Say Goodbye To The Anti-Dives!
dingy replied to skydoc_17's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you disconnect the electric to valves it will accomplish almost the same thing as the block off valves. You should probably consider progressive springs prior to doing this. I have been working on a drawing and write up for the forks & anti dives. I hope it will help detail some of the inner workings of a 1st gen fork. One thing I have discovered while doing the drawing is that the anti dive valve is open when the brakes are not applied. I can see little benefit from the anti dives from what I have seen from the internals. Few preliminary shots attached. Gary -
Since you found that a fuse was blown, it would be a good idea to look farther into the reason the fuse failed. Motorcycle circuits generally have a very consistent load on a given circuit. This is unlike a house fuse that may blow because of a toaster plugged into a circuit that is already near capacity. Also, what fuse did you replace? I am only seeing one fuse in the headlight circuit that controls both the high and low beam in the wiring diagram. Also, the owners manual only shows one fuse. (15 amp fuse in fuse box 2) Gary

Look at using the 'Match' & 'Index' function. Formula below is an example. It first indexes all cells in a range from Q62 to Q118. Then it looks for a match to cell B8 anywhere in the Q62 to Q118 range. If this formula is in cell A1, then a match found would display in A1 cell. =INDEX(Q62:Q118,MATCH(B8,Q62:Q118)) If you need it, I could send you an example of it in use. PM me with an email address. 83 versus 89--weak spark
dingy replied to frankd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The electronic circuitry will have to be different in the 83's from the 84 -89 models. This will be necessary due to the way the 83's interpret the signal from the vacuum sensor. It could be that the 83 has diodes that are on the verge of completely failing. There are 8 diodes that fail due to a form of corrosion. Once any of these diodes fails, the TCI will fail to provide spark to the cylinder that that particular diode was controlling. Another cause could be the plug wires have higher than normal resistance. Gary -
Get an old hard drive. Inside are two VERY powerful magnets. Small in size, easier to conceal. I have a pair of them zip tied to my center stand. Gary

VMax 4 brush starter pictures
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The four brush starter plate would probably fit into the 2 brush starter, but that is not the problem. The windings are configured differently. All 4 windings on the two brush starter are connected in series. On the 4 brush starter there are two windings each in 2 separate circuits. If you look at the pictures above, there are 2 positive wires going down to the windings, 1 on each positive brush 180 degs. apart. It would be difficult to reconfigure these windings. There is a hole on the negative brush holder that I can use for the extra ground wire. It is shown a little better in picture below. The negative brush at 6 o'clock position has a hole just to right of it that can be used. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/DSC00938.jpg- 3 replies

I got a 4 brush VMaxstarter off Ebay for my Venture. $60 with shipping. Came off a 92 with 26k miles on it. Sandblasting and powder coating will clean it up like new. 1990 and newer 1st gen VMax's have the 4 brush starter. There have been a few questions on here about this starter. It should crank better than the stock Venture 2 brush starter. Doing the grounding wire mod will be harder to do, since there is not much room on the brush plate to attach the additional ground wire. Also shown is a stock 2 brush starter brush plate for comparison. Jeff, I have a detailed drawing of a valve shim tool. If you want it, I will make a PDF out of it and you can have it. I have sent out for about a dozen quotes on getting it made. None of the replies that I got back were in the range that it made any sense to pursue it. Gary

Looking at the picture for the Suzuki tool, it does not look like it would work well. It would definitely not work on a 1st gen while the engine is in the bike. This tool does not engage the flats on the cam shaft. It has a long handle that is used to rotate the tool around the cam. There is no room on a 1st gen to do this, probably not on a 2nd gen either. From the picture it does not look wide enough to engage both valve shim buckets at the same time, which would cause it to tend to slip off of just one bucket. Gary

If money was not a primary concern, it looks like 2 of the smaller case size batteries would fit in place of one standard Venture battery. Lithium iron LFX14L2-BS12, size 2.28" x 3.50" x 4.45", 14 AH and 210 CCA. Standard size Deka EXT-18Lis 3.56" x 6.38" x 8.13", 18AH and 330 CCA. Wire two of the smaller lithium-iron batteries in parallel, it would double the AH and CCA ratings. You could get 28 AH and 420 CCA. About $300 worth of batteries though. Gary

1st gen Fork Tube help needed.
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mike, Picture #1 that you posted shows a hole just above the bushing recess. What are dimensions on this hole? Dia and distance from bottom. Is it drilled through? Is there any mechanism in this hole? It looks like there is something shown across the mid line of the hole. Gary -

1st gen Fork Tube help needed.
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What I am looking for is: Dimensions don't have to be extremely accurate, I am just trying to make a rough drawing to try and understand the workings of the AD system. If I can get a grip on it, I will do a write up on how it works and if it is useful. Overall length I.D. of tube O.D of tube at bottom Width of lower bushing recess in tube Dia of lower bushing recess in tube Distance from bottom of tube for lower bushing recess in tube How far from top of tube is the O.D. consistent (it starts to taper in at some point past seal bearing surface) Bottom of tube geometry I.D. of hole in bottom Is it tapered. How thick is bottom shoulder Counter bored ? Closeup pictures of bottom of tube would help. Picture of inside of tube at the top (I have the parts that mate up to top, just a picture would be nice) Gary -
I am working on a detailed description with drawings on the inner workings of the Anti Dive system and need some help. I have all the spare parts I need except for the inner fork tube. I could use some help from someone that has a disassembled 1st gen fork that could get me some measurements of the tube and maybe a couple of pictures. A partially completed drawing I am working on is shown below. I have even taken a spare outer tube I had and cut it open to get a better view of the cross section. Top Lid Question
dingy replied to SC89Venture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Below is a link to a thread that addressed this issue. I was having similar problems with my 83 at somewhat high speeds. I attached a spacer to the front grommet that seems to have cured the problem. It has been tested at quite high speeds and not come loose. About 3/4 of the was down in thread linked are some pictures. Snaggletooth's solution quite possibly will work, I quit trying after I did this. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=51760 Gary -

I checked an anti-dive valve. The path through the valve is closed (blocked) when the valve is not engaged. Gary -
